im currently searching frantically for the software required to overclock my Travelmate 3201 after reading this thread: -
http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=45514
Now i KNOW that overclocking a laptop isnt the best idea in the world, i dont need telling this, but if a 2ghz Dothan can do 2.4ghz then i fancy my chances of getting to 1.7/8ghz. sooo the question:-
has anyone got this software, iv tried numerous versions of clockgen but they dont appear to be the right version. and has anyone else tried this?

Have u got a copy of that ClockGen?

Hi MaddukUK
I would strongly discourage trying to overclock your system for three reasons:
1- The chips from the Centrino family (Dothan inlcuded) are designed to run at a variable and lower rate to preserve power (battery life). Overclocking would defeat this very purpose.
2- Overclocking is not recommended by chip manufacturers, and overcloking your Dothan would simply void the warranty Intel provides on that chip.
3- Clock speed is certainly not the single most important factor responsible for making a faster system. That's the first lesson a computer design engineer learns.

I think this is the ClockGen they're refering to.

Looks like it's mainly for desktop motherboards, so I don't know how it'll work on a notebook. Try at your own risk.

hi rahuja, yes none of this is news to e. i was hoping that adding "Now i KNOW that overclocking a laptop isnt the best idea in the world, i dont need telling this" to the original post would stop the generic "overclocking isnt good" style posts. guess it didnt work. as a general disclaimer against overclocking this would be fine.
Venombite - yeah thats the clockgen website, unfortunatly the version of clockgen (its motherboard specific) i (we?) need is a beta version and is not on the website. although the thread i linked to shows it in action so we know it works and is available somewhere.
George_l, nope i dont have it, kinda given away by the fact im looking for it but nevemind.
The Dothan procesor is still very much in its infancy, a time when clock speeds are relatively low and manufacturers (in this case Intel) are looking to the future of ramping the clock speed up. its currently at 2.1Ghz (although 2.1X for the new 533Mhz chipset to be released soon). Im currently running at 1.5Ghz, there are no indications of differences between the 1.5Ghz and 2.1Ghz parts except for the multiplier. there is a great deal of headroom unexploited, if a 2.1Ghz part can run at the same voltage and thermal output as a 1.5Ghz part then i see no reason not to overclock in this case.
"Clock speed is certainly not the single most important factor responsible for making a faster system. That's the first lesson a computer design engineer learns"
no, as far as a 3201 is concerned, for general use a 7200rpm harddrive would be more benificial, after that a upgrading to 1GB Ram would help, then then we come to the sticking point. both these options are a fairly easy swap of hardware. after that there are the graphics card and processor to consider, the graphics card can be easily overclocked useing ATI Tool (as i do, with no negative effects)the processor can be changed for a faster one, but as previously mentioned is it really any faster? and does it remove any of th erisks that overclocking (in thi instance) contains? im sure if i dropped a 2.0Ghz Dothan in my fan would spin up slightly more, and my keyboard may get a little warmer. these are the sort of things i expect from overclocking aswell. we arent dealing with a 3.8Ghz Prescott here, where overclocking requires a foam tube and a glass of liquid nitrogen, this is a Dothan running way below it capabilities.
Ill end here, if anyone has the correct version of Clockgen then please let me know [8D]

i dunno what is the version of clockgen tat will work for ur 3201
but my 2012 work with clockgen for cy28346
and my banias 1.5 work perfectly stable at 1.7...free speed.

Come on now, do you really think you'll notice any difference???
