    Hi

I have recently purchased the ACER 7720 G. After an initial problem with it not booting I updated th BIOS and all was well. However for the last couple of weeks I keep getting an MS .Net Framework Error. The Acer Empowering software then shuts down.

    Error

Attempted to read or write protected memory.

I have tried reinstalling from ACERS website but the same thing happens every time.

    Can anyone help?

Ps I have also noticed when I go to the properties section under processor and RAM it says unavailable (where before it showed the correct processor and ram installed)

    Thanks

Do you mean that you can not see the cpu under the control panel/system/device manager view?

Does PC Wizard run ok and report all of the hardware?

Is all of the other software working ok?

A few more details might help, what OS/patch level, when do the errors appear (immediately on boot?).

Are there error messages in the system event logs ? (visible from control panel/administration tools/event viewer)

The error appears after I have logged in to windows. Im pretty sure it is when it starts to auto load the Empowering technology. This had worked in the past though. Im running Vista SP1 and have not changed anything from the factory setup apart from the BIOS taken from the Acer web. All other software runs fine

The other issue is where it does not report on how much RAM I have installed or the processor. I find this from start, right clock computer \ properties.

Let's assume your hardware is ok, as everything else seems to be working. (You could confidence test the hardware by downloading OCCT and/or Prime95 and stress testing the system).

If its a software problem it would be good to localise it to the OS (Vista) or application (Acer tools) as follows:

    1) Vista

It is a concern you cannot see details of the cpu/memory when using a standard Vista component.

You can make sure that the hardware drivers are in place and working normally via control panel/system/device manager - you should not see any yellow exclamation marks. Can you check this please.

You can make sure that there were no problems when Vista was loading during the boot process by looking in the system event log, under control panel/administration tools/event viewer. Vista should give you a summary when you start the viewer and you are interested in the error counts for the 'critical' and 'error' categories. If you have criticals it is not the end of the world, but the details of the event/s could provide clues about an underlying problem with Vista. Can you check this please.

    2) Acer's Applications

You have already done the best thing here by reinstalling them. Perhaps one of the forum's Acer tolls experts has more suggestions.

I think the likelihood is that Vista has become corrupt and you will need to revert to a restore point or reinstall. The information you get when checking out as per 1) above will help you to decide the next step.

    Good luck :)

    Hi thank -

Well I have checked the event logs and WMI is erroring a lot - This from google seems to show this is the cause of the None reporting of the processor and RAM.

All is fine in the device manager. So I suspect my .net error is seperate. Its really annoying me! I cant do a system restore as it is only showing about 2 weeks worth and the problem started before then

Been googling and it looks like its all connected to the WMI errors! Looks like a restore!

Resgtore fixed it! Worth noting I have seen a few random entries about this problem before. Its because WMI has some serious issues. I attempted a fix but the restore was really the only option. All working again
