I installed XP on a 5920 and need to know the best/newest Empowering Utils for XP.

I downloaded few of Acer site has funny side effects, in ePower the LCD brightness only goes to 60% and "Entertaiment" profile makes the LCD pitch black when chosen.

Other version of ePower doesn't have the option to turn off Bluetooth/Xpress card among other things.

    Thanks

I was told by ACER that installing the empowering utilities on your personal- installed Win XP system will not guarantee that all its features will work properly.

It's a different story if WinXP comes pre-installed in your notebok. In this case ACER has to ensure that the empowering utilities work.

Thats why I'm not installing the empowering utilities for I do not need them in my VISTA converted-to-Win XP notebook

    :)

Hi, thanks for the reply. That's too bad, I could have used eNet to change network profiles on the move.

So that said, when using XP what should I do to get "maximum performance" that would otherwise be offered by ET or Vista's power management.

XP power management only goes to shutting down HD, Display but it doesn't say anything about lowering the CPU/brightness. I can lower the brightness manually from the Fn key but how about CPU.

Am I using 100% of the CPU when using XP at all times then ?

    Thanks for any input.

No, not 100% CPU will be utilized all the time. When you reach that stage your notebook's performance would be sluggish if not hang. This can happen if there's some rouge program that cause the CPU to hang at 100%

I've experienced this before. The only way is to re-boot your notebook and get rid of that rouge progam.

You can see the CPU utilization from your system otherwise get a 3rd-party program to view it.

Yes I kinda got that :)

From what I've gathered from using Vista and using a lower power profile is that the batt would last longer. Vista does that by lowering CPU/Brightness no matter what kind of CPU intensive program I'm running.

Example: When playing SIMS2 I won't get as much performance on "Power Saver" as I would when choosing the "Maximum Performance" profile.

At least that's has been my impression, am I wrong ?

If not, doesn't that mean that XP would be able to utilize 100% of the CPU at all times when running programs like SIMS2, and at the same time don't we need programs such as ePower then if we want to use XP and manage the Laptop's power consumption more efficiently, if needed ?

I wonder if I should go back to Vista...

    What do u think ?

Hey thanks,I didn't know that I can lower LCD brightness with the FN key after I uninstall ePower.
It didn't even cross my mind to try it :D ,I thought it was impossible without ePower.

Anyway,I completely uninstalled Empowering Technology because it was a mess.
Every time I powered my notebook I had to adjust Profiles because they were different every time...
Now I have this strange situation,in Windows Power Options in Power schemes there is a Maximum Performance and Entertainment profile left (I deleted all the others,Word processing,Max battery life...) and when I switch to Entertainment profile my CPU clock goes to 800Mhz and voltage to 0.800v (default voltage is 1.075v and clock 1.6Ghz).

So I guess I still got some kind of ePower :D ,and it's good enought for me.
Especially now when I know that I can still lower my LCD brightness...

exactly my point lowering the clock speed is one of the things that XP can't do without a 3rd party app. Even tough xp is best for running games, I'm beginning to wonder whether vista is the best OS for this Laptop in terms of longevity.

hehe good for you about that Fn shortcut. Really useful indeed. I can turn off the back light entirely with Fn F6 when downloading something, and not using the laptop.
