    Greetings!

I'll start out by saying I am new to these forums as well as the Acer line of notebooks. However I'm looking to change both those things soon. I'm planning on buying an Acer Ethos 8950G or Ethos 8951G. As you probably guessed from the title, I am looking for input as to the differences between the two.

Of course I have spent hours pouring over the specs of each version and have noticed some slight changes like the graphics card (which seem very similar anyway) and color scheme. But there's only so much the specs can tell me. Overall, I'm wondering what the impact of these changes are on performance and a list of the differences between the machines.

I consider myself competent with computers, but I'm certainly no wizard, so keeping it simple would be appreciated.

So far I like the silver aluminum of the 8950G but of course don't want to sacrafice too much performance to have it. Seeing as the 8951G is a bigger number I have the (often wrong) mindset that it is newer and thus more powerful. So am I right/wrong?

Thanks in advance! I really do appreciate the help.

The 555m and the 5850M used in both are the slower varients of each.

The 555m only has 16 Rops and a 128bit mem bus attached to DDR3 instead of 24 Rops attached to 192bit DDR3.
    The 5850m uses 128bit DDR3 instead of GDDR5

The 5850m will still have quite a shading power advantage and will be the faster graphics chip.

If you live in the United States the 8950G isn't available anymore and has been replaced by the 8951. The major differences are the case of the 8951 is black and the case has one big panel to remove to add or replace components. I have a 8950 and i added a SSD drive and moved the HD that came with it to the second bay and I needed a 2nd bay cover and a cable. It looks like you would only need a cable to do this with the 8951. The touch pad is removable and can be used as a remote on the 8951. The 8951 uses a Nvidia graphics card and 8950 has an ATI. The 8951 has a backlit keyboard and only the number lock and caps locks have it on the 8950. From what i've read the battery life of the 8951 is a little better and 5.5 hours is listed. All in all they are very similar and the 8951 is available in the USA for 1448 which was cheaper then my 8950 i bought in Feb fro 1499.
