Hey GalaxySII,
I'm doing just fine. Still enjoying my 8951G, ..but at the same time also in the market for a new laptop for work ... (The up-coming MacBook Pro..!! ---or when it isn't what I Need/hope for, a BIG new 2012 BTO!!![]()
![]()
hhhmm, To be honest, I have no Idea how to disassemble this LCD display..![]()
And If any-time I should have something done with the display, we have here one Very talented
(named him Mr. PC-DUuuude), who repairs and/or switches out with new display, ---every single laptop/notebook.... no-matter the model/brand
And trust me when I say, He is very good at it! Cause he does it with every laptop, ---without using any service manual! And --thus far, For Real ---no errors!,..
![]()
---so nope... I don't know how to disassemble the LCD dislay,
(and then again why would I want to try figure that out, with Mr. PC-DUuuude just one call away!![]()
Right now for the 8951G service manual, I start to doubt a bit, if we'll ever gonna see him...
Maybe you've got a Mr. PC-DUuuude talented person who could do whatever you want to do with your display?
---If not, I guess you keep asking around the forum for tips/info
...or you can keep on hoping for the service manual ....hhhmm one-day...haha![]()

you won lottery ? -
If that would only be true
The 8951G was some nice cash... but a MacBook Pro.....It's certainly not cheap....
----Just a week or so (I Hope), and Apple will either get my order for a new MacBook Pro,... or We go the windows route... (Which I hope not with all the Mac Edit software I have laying around to use again...)
How are you doing these days? -
xpecting baby
in may so we are exciting

Can somebody point me in the right direction?
I recently dropped a ssd in the second drive bay and instead of utilizing the included "SSD Magician" software to clone the first hd I would very much like do a fresh install of just the oem os along with a few acer apps, but I'm unsure where those executable files are located. I realize there is a SYSTEM RESERVED partition, but I am also unsure how to go about loading it. If this has been explained in one of the previous posts I must've overlooked, but any info or advice would me much obliged!

Hi! I Have a recently purchased AS5951G-9630 Laptop and i'm planing to install a clean Windows 7 x64 Ultimate after i'll receive my Vertex 4 SSD and want to know if there is any software to know exactly what hardware i have inside? Because like example, on Asus website there are 3 drivers for wireless lan:
Broadcom
Atheros
Intel
How can i check what exactly i have in my laptop?
and 2nd question, anyone have troubles with bluetooth? I can't find any device and my laptop can't be founded by my mobile phone? Any sugestions? Thanks! -
A very Simple solution, use the Acer-recovery disks. (make sure you make them!)
You can use them to do a fresh install, which installs everything in factory-settings (Including the hidden Acer-recovery partition)---simple...
Hey Tolick;
There are different programs which can give you in-site into what HW is inside.
A Very good one is HWInfo64 It's a Freeware program giving you much info + sensors-checking.
HWiNFO64 Download
A 'Much Wider/better' program (paid) is AIDA64 Extreme Edition
It's a Very great program for just $40, but for that, you get
--Hardware diagnostics
--CPU, memory and disk benchmarks
--Temperature, voltage and cooling fan monitoring
--Software and operating system analysis

--Allow Bluetooth devices to find this computer
--Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer
and (To keep things save) yes to:
--Alert me when a new Bluetooth device wants to connect

Bluetooth is foxconn manufacturer but drivers are broadcom .. -
any ideas? -
If not go to windows update and check if offers driver or go to device manager look on missing driver bluetooth and click update driver search auto -
For those who have had issues with the Media Remote (My battery expanded and it no longer sat correctly) Acer issues a warranty replacment no questions asked.. and the replacment came with the invoice with the correct part number to find a replacment
56.RHS07.001
Hopes that helps someone ;-) -
stravlr how long did it take for you to get a new one? Also did they want the broken one?
-
I had exactly the same issue (battery expanded) and Acer (I'm in South Africa) said that:
1.) They would not even consider replacing it without me booking the entire laptop in so they could "evaluate" it.
2.) The minimum "book-in" period was 3 days.
As I've never used the touch-pad/remote (I prefer a mouse), I just took it out & put it in a drawer & forgot about it.
Now here's the weird part ... about 2 months ago, my mouse broke & it was too early for the shops to be open to get a replacement, so I dug the touch-pad out of the drawer & popped it in. It sat at a funny angle, but as long as it was connected it worked, so I used it for a few hours & then went & bought a replacement mouse, but left the touch-pad in. That evening I closed the laptop without thinking & took it home. The next day, when I opened it up ... the touch-pad wasn't swollen anymore, lies as flat as the day I got it. ... and now it works as a remote when not connected. Any explanations for that?

Hello.
Im trying to reinstall windows 7 without the restere dvd of ACER. I wan to install it manually with the latest versions of drivers and without acer software.
Windows 7 start the installation. But it can´t detect any drive to install. Y try to use the ahci driver but i don´t get any result.
What driver i miss in the installation procedure?
Thanks a lot. -
Thanx a mil RAY24!!! The solution to preforming a fresh OS install minus the Acer bloatware on a new solid state drive was a few clicks away this whole time. Eventually, I'll re-format the original HDD once I'm comfortable with the new set-up. I'm currently given the choice which OS to boot into and boy oh boy what a difference in speed and responsiveness the SSD offers. I digress, but anyway thanks again for pointing that out to me.

Hi
Can I check if the following ram will be compatible with my Ethos 8951g?
I intend to change my stock memory to 4 of these:
Vengeance® 4GB High Performance Laptop Memory Upgrade Kit (CMSX4GX3M1A1600C9)
Is this overkill because the intel website says that my motherboard (i7 2670QM) will only support ram that is 1066 or 1333Mhz? I have been trying to read up on this with various sites but cannot get a clear understanding.
The Corsair website states that the Vengeance series ram cards will work on any motherboards (even those that do not support 1600Mhz) without any bios settings to be made as it would auto clock itself.
Has anyone tried this or could someone advise?
Thanks -
The stupid Acer Update program decided to serve me a BIOS update which failed and bricked my computer...so I had to figure out how to fix it. There have been a few posts here regarding how to recover the BIOS, but also some unanswered follow-up questions (such as how to get the actual BIOS file from the BIOS exe available from Acer), so let me clarify the process (very simple, actually).
How to Recover AS8951G BIOS after failed BIOS Update:
Download 7-zip if you don't already have it.
Download the most recent BIOS from the Acer website (what you download will be a zip with two folders, DOS and Windows).
Use 7-zip to extract the BIOS zip file.
In 7-zip, browse to the folder with the extracted BIOS files and browse to the WINDOWS folder (it may look like the same file is in both the DOS and Windows folder, but the contents are indeed different). Right click on the exe file ( ZRH113W.exe) and select " Open Inside." This will reveal the contents of the exe file.
Copy the files that are now visible by selecting files, right-clicking, and using the "copy to" function (you may not need all of them but you definitely need at least ZRH.fd, just copy them all and it will work) to copy to the main directory of a USB flash drive (I freshly formatted one, but sure if this is necessary as the BIOS recovery probably knows what files to look for).
Connect USB flash drive to one of the USB ports (did it with the one closest to the front on the right side, probably also doesn't matter) and hold FN+ESC while pressing the power button. Power button light should start flashing; now just wait. Power light goes off after a while but process continues (my fan stayed on despite the lights going off); if successful system will reboot and you are good to go!
There, easy, takes <10 minutes if you do it right. No $100+shipping to Acer to resolve. Outrageous that Acer pushes a BIOS update through their update utility like it's a software patch (no red warnings or anything, I didn't even pay attention to what the update was as I generally trust manufacturer updates) and then fails to provide these simple recovery instructions after their glitchy updates fail. -
Hi everybody!
After the succesfull experience with a great Gemstone 5920, the actual 4820TG timeline X, I want to give Acer a chance again, buying a ETHOS 5951G as a present for my girlfriend.
Said that, can anyone tell me if that model has any particular weakness, trouble or down side (heat, failures, screen, usability, throttling issues for example)
Thank you very much for your help!
The version I'm planning to buy has i5 2410M 4 gb ram and nvidia gt555m, and costs a little more than 500 €
PS: excuse my poor english! -
Is there anyone there? -
But i have changed bios 5 times or dont know how many few times and never had problems..
When u flashing you MUST NOT mess with anything in windows during proces.. Or removing stuff from usb or even moving with mouse..
All causing crash..! -
I myself was the proud owner of the Acer Aspire Ethos 8920G (The BIG 18.4" brother of the 5920G) --I passed it unto my dad after buying new the 8951G.
The little brother is the 5951G
All I can tell you is, I have had no problems with this one, at all.
--No Throttling issues,
--HI'm running a i7-2630QM 16GB 1866MHz RAM, and 2 750GB 7200rpm HDD's...
Running on it some Pro on-the-road HD Video-editing..
---So yeah in my case it's normal it can have some build up heat now and then..
---The screen, (for my part) is nice, and more than enough for my needs.
I haven't had any failures off any sort, only a tiny glitch in the Wireless-remote, where the battery got swollen (a little bulge on the back.. ??)
I left it out for a few days to get it back into normal 'straight' shape again..
And put it back in. Since then it stayed in it's normal _no-bulge_ shape...
...needs to get adjusted to some heat I guess?
Liquid Heat & Cold --Expand & collapse.. Chemistry stuff
--Heat and Throttling is I guess the most important thing you want to know about.
So...
In you're planning on getting 15.6" with an i5-2410m 4GB of RAM, and an nVidia GT555 M...?
I guess you don't have to worry about heat issues as much as one with an Quad i7 inside,
---And Throttling won't neither be an issue.
4GB of RAM you can off course upgrade to 16GB, but since you probably have them running on 1333MHz, heat wont be an issue there either.
Hope it helps. -
Thank you very much for your opinion! I think that I will take it, it seems a good machine at reasonable price

Hello! I'm planning to buy:
Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10)
But before purchasing, can anyone confirm that 8951g can handle up to 24 gb ram??? please let me know! thanks! -
but buy 24gb and try
i think 16gb is useless .. 24gb nonsense -
What about bluetooth on 8951G???
I still can't use it.
My Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G-9630 have Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6205 card inside. And also i have on/off bluetooth option, i tried all details but still can't find my phone.
Please help me! Thanks! -
Hello
I've been looking at buying the AS5951G version, but have been put off by the glossy, low standard screen.
May I ask if it would be possible to obtain a 1600x900 less glossy screen for this laptop and get it replaced?
Is this something anyone on here has done?
Thanks -
Why do they insist not to release new 18.4'' laptop with new generation Gpu and Cpu... cant understand it. In any case there is no competitor for 18.4''. who releases, it will sell the best.

I have an issue that I think is with the gigabit Ethernet. Can anyone help?
It seems like the Ethernet just can't handle large bandwidth. It's connected to my hub at 1.0 Gbps, but when I run a Windows Media Center stream from my HDHomeRun in HD, it barely keeps up when I browse the web or do any other tasks that require the internet. And forget about watching one stream and recording another - it's just a huge amount of pixels.
I know it's not a hub/HDHomeRun problem, since I have an Asus i5 with gigabit ethernet, and it handles two streams and browsing the internet with no issues at all.
I have gone into the config settings and turned off all of the power saving and "green ethernet" settings on the ethernet card, but this doesn't change anything.
Anyone have any thoughts? Is the Acer known for having a gigabit ethernet card that's not really gigabit? Please let me know, as I am running out of ideas. Thanks! -
Acer 8951G 10/100/1000 NIC settings check
Network Card: RealTek Semiconductor RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Vendor Description: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Maximum Link Speed:1000 Mbps
Transmit Buffer Size:193792 Bytes
Receive Buffer Size:775168 Bytes
Check your cable. Have a 5E or 6 category cable. Category 5 cabling is most commonly used for
faster Ethernet networks, such as 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T. CAT 6 cabling is the best.
If you are sure your router or switch works with gigabit:
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections
Right click adapter > Properties > Configure button > Advanced tab
Speed and Duplex > 1.0gbps full
Or
In the property of NIC card or Onboard LAN, check in Advanced Tab...
Speed and Duplex ... set to 1000 Mbps Full Duplex
Jumbo Packet... set to 9014 bytes if possible
The LAN driver is for Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller and essentially uses an 8111 chip on the motherboard. Its configurable settings can be found in:
Device Manager/Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller/Properties/Advanced tab, and are:
(the possible configuring for each property is either 'enabled' or 'disabled')
802.1Q/1p VLAN Tagging - disabled
Auto disable PCIe - disabled
Auto disable PHY - disabled
Checksum offload - Rx and Tx enabled
Flow control - enabled
Green Ethernet - enabled
Jumbo frame - disabled
Large send offload - enabled
Network address - not present
Shutdown wake-on-LAN - enabled
Speed and duplex - auto negotiation
Wake-on-LAN capabilities - pattern match and image ...
WOL and shutdown link speed - 100M bps first
Anyway, in case this could be useful to others in the future, these are possible settings also:
802.1Q/1p VLAN Tagging - Disabled
Auto Disable PCIe - Disabled
Auto Disable PHY - Disabled
Checksum offload - Rx and Tx Enabled
Flow control - Enabled
Green Ethernet - Enabled
Jumbo frame - Disabled
Large Send offload - Enabled
Network Address - Not Present
Shutdown Wake-on-LAN - Disabled
Speed and Duplex - Auto negotiation
Wake-on-LAN capabilities - Pattern Match and Magic Packet
WOL and Shutdown Link Speed - 10M bps first
Auto Disable Gigabit: running gigabit speed without any need uses more power, so there is option to disable it automatically when not in use
Flow Control: Flow Control is mechanism for handling send/receive speeds without outrunning slower party
Green Ethernet: Proprietary power saving technology
Interrupt Moderation: no interrupt for every packet, but after timeout/enough data
IPv4 Checksum Offload: Network controller will calculate checksums, instead of CPU.
Jumbo Frame: support for larger frames than ethernet default (1500 bytes)
Large Send Offload: method for sending large amount of data to network controller, which will then process it at once
Network Address: most probably MAC address of network card.
Priority & VLAN: priority: QOS feature. VLAN: Virtual LAN
Receive Buffers: Size of buffers for received data
Receive Side Scaling: support for using multiple processor while receiving
Shutdown Wake-On-Lan: Enable wake-on-lan support (possibility to remotely start up computer with special network packet)
Speed & Duplex: default speed (for example 10Mb/s, 100Mb/s) and duplex (half- or full-)
-
Many thanks for the thoughts on this. I have played around with the settings, but will see if any of those particular configurations work. Also, I didn't even think to check the cable. It says "GIGA" on it, but it might be bad. I'll swap that out tonight, and also plug it into a new hub port too. Will report back for the benefit of any others.

Acer + Asus or more pc'c on a HUB read on
Network Hubs and Switches Guide
Hubs and switches function as a common connection point for the workstations, printers, file servers and other devices that make up a network. The main difference between hubs and switches is the way in which they communicate with the network.
What is a Hub?
A hub functions as the central connection point of a network. It joins together the workstations, printers, and servers on a network, so they can communicate with each other. Each hub has a number of ports that connect it to the other devices via a network cable.
How does a Hub work?
A hub is an inexpensive way to connect devices on a network. Data travels around a network in packets and a hub forwards these data packets out to all the devices connected to its ports.
As a hub distributes packets to every device on the network, when a packet is destined for only one device, every other device connected to the hub receives that packet. Because all the devices connected to the hub are contending for transmission of data the individual members of a shared network will only get a percentage of the available network bandwidth. This process can slow down a busy network.
A hub is known as a multi-port repeater. It is designed to work on Layer 1 of the OSI model – the Physical layer, meaning it handles bits via electrical signals.
Regular repeaters work by accepting the incoming signals, cleaning them up (regenerating them, thus removing static/interference that may have built up) and pumping them out of the outgoing port. A hub does the same thing, but pumps the signal back out of every port that’s connected to a host. This causes a slew of problems. In half duplex mode you have the potential for collisions, where two computers send data at the same time – To prevent collisions, half-duplex uses CSMA/CD, carrier sense multiple access/collision detection. When a collision is detected, it’ll send a signal to the hosts calling them fools, and telling them to count to an arbitrary random number and resend the data. Full-Duplex takes care of this; however, hubs with any amount of traffic will bottle neck tremendously.
-
Understood...I have a 4-port router with an 8-port hub connected to one of the ports. My Acer and Asus are both on the hub, though, and the Asus doesn't have any problems. So I'm pretty sure it's related to the Acer or the connection to the hub.
-
Okay, so the problem is fixed! It turns out I needed a new driver for the Realtek card. The latest Acer version was not late enough, apparently.
I went to the Realtek site and got the latest version, driver only, and installed it through the Driver tab on the network card's Windows properties. All is good. I ran one WMC stream, recorded another, and downloaded some webpages with no pixelization. All good! -
Realtek driver fix. Good. Is this what was downloaded from Realtek:
Latest V7.058 release date 5/22/2012 Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 Auto Installation Program (SID:1497589)
And for win7 32/64 bit? -
That is the right driver, yes (V7.058, Win7 32/64-bit). The only difference is that I didn't bother with the executable version. It comes in a raw driver package (the one that's just less than 1 meg), so I installed the driver directly through the network card's Properties box.

RAM upgrade:
I've tried searching but keep getting "invalid query" ... so please excuse me if I repeat a previously answered question.
I have the 8951G, with a SSD as my main drive and 8Gb of RAM (2 x 4 Gb 666MHz), and am running Windows 7 64 Home Premium.
I want to upgrade my RAM to 4 x 4GB = 16Gb and have the following questions:
1.) Is ANY soDIMM RAM compatible?
2.) What is the maximum frequency the RAM can use (I see someone's signature says 1866!)
3.) If I mix different frequencies, what will be the result? Will it work, will it slow the faster down to the slower?
4.) What performance difference can I expect from a faster frequency?
EDIT: I opened up the back & can only see the 2 empty slots ... how difficult is it to change the other 2?
My primary reason is to be able to load more VirtualBox VMs simultaneously, so performance isn't the biggest priority ... but I'd rather get the best I can while I'm about it.
Thanks

Hy all !
Where can i download the dolby theater version v4 from ? i couldnt find a working link anywere !
Please help a 5951g brother out -
Still waiting for someone to help me with a correct download link to the dolby home theater v4 software -
Can you upgrade the graphics card on the 8951G?
-
Please how can I enable wake-up the notebook from sleep mode by USB keyboard?
-
Hey all. Just picked up a hardly used 8951G from ebay. Ordered 16gb of Kingston 1866 memory, have a vertex 120gb ssd on the way. I am also planning to upgrade the cpu to the 2860
what are you using for the wifi card? I know the installed is junk.
secondly, any new sources for the second hd cable. The company in Canada is sold out :-(
This laptop is EOL but still a killer in its own right
thanks
P.S. dolby 4 links all seem to be dead. can anyone kindly repost a live link -
Has any one done the Win 8 preview on the 8951? How did it go, Can you install any of the Acer apps?
-
hello is this thread still alive ;-)
-
I hope so, i've just bought a 5951G for my girlfirend
Seems a nice machine, skyrim runs very smoothly, unfortunately acer update bios upgrade suggestion fooled me and I bricked it... what a bad moment!
Googling for it fortunately saved it (and me) with a pendrive and a fn+esc boot.
It's incredible that you power up the machine for the first time and a acer program suggest you a way to BRICK your pc!!! -
what are you all using to replace your wifi card/ I have a dual band router and bought the wifi intel 6300 but it will not turn on with the commands. I am thinking acer has white listed certain cards. help
-
Acer doesn't whitelist anything. That said if your 6300 is meant doe Lenovo it won't work- there was something different about Lenovo ones (I can't remember what it was though
)
-
this a half height intel direct from amazon. I get a code 10 message in the device manager. Problem is I cannot seem to turn it on with the FN F3 key.
suggestions? -
well I have tried everything to get this wifi card to work. The drivers are installed and I can see it the device manager but has the yellow exclamation.
Code 10 is the reason for it not working. If I take it out and put back the one that came with the computer, fires right up. If I put the wifi 6300 in an asus, has no problem working. I just cant figure out how to turn it on outside of the function F3......Are you sure they dont white list.
