What is the LCD model number?

Not all the 5951g notebooks came with FHD screens.

Thanks for posting this - I had this issue on an 8951G I picked up for work and thought it was defective (picked up a refurb from Acer's outlet store on eBay for the amazing price of $949 - apparently they've had a lot of returns, they seem to have a ton of them!). It took me about 5 times to get it right, but it did work. Initially it would only respond to the pad of my finger, not the tip, and only if I pushed down hard, like a resistive touchscreen. Then after resetting it a couple times, the touch function starting working properly, except that the mouse axis were both rotated & reversed, so left/right was up/down and up/down was left-right, as if you were pointing the remote at the screen. Another reset fixed that & now it's very smooth, so thank you very much! It's a very cool piece of tech - I love how the buttons light up on the black surface!

I popped a 240GB SATA-III Mushkin in there, although it appears to only read at SATA-II speeds. Was still pulling in nearly 280 MB/s, so not bad. It looks like I'll need a bracket and a cable to attach the old mechanical drive in the second bay ($30 for the combo on Amazon, it appears). I was also surprised that both RAM slots were empty, so I threw 16 gigs in (2x8GB modules) - it wouldn't boot into Win7 Home Premium, so I upgraded it to Professional and it recognizes 24 gigs of RAM now. One website said there were 4 RAM slots, so I'm curious if there's a fourth empty slot on the board, or if they limited it to 3 physical slots - 32 gigs of RAM would be pretty fun to have, especially for the ridiculously low price of $40 a stick! It's really nice having an i7, 24 gigs of RAM, and an SSD in a laptop with a monster screen and fairly thin dimensions. It doesn't feel like 8.8 pounds at all - one of my previous laptops was a 12-pound 17" Clevo/Sager, so this feels like a featherweight compared to that! Also found some part information on a Newegg review:

Doing some research as I'm typing this...looks like it does support 32 gigs of RAM, very nice!

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...os-8951g-very-slow-boot-ocz-vertex-4-ssd.html

Might also be fun to pop a third drive into the optical bay. Make it a cheap Clevo!

Wow, it's been a long time since I was on the forum ...work..work... Nice to hear people still are helped with older posts:thumbsup:
--Glad I could be of any help :D

...It is correct, there are 4 RAM slots.
2 accessible on the back.. And 2 more underneath the keyboard... :(
(Those 2 underneath the keyboard are probably filled with 2x4GB, that's how you get the 24GB total
(Those 2 RAM slots are more difficult to reach--but it's possible
(A while back, I also made a little step-by-step PDF how to get access to those 2 RAM slots underneath the keyboard.

And the thing about you having 24GB!! and the possibility of getting 32GB to work...wowwie :D :D

So upgrading my windows home premium will do the trick...
In what way did you upgrade it to Windows 7 professional? ---was it cheap..?

Hey GalaxySII -- Long time ago..:hi2:
...hhhmm 32GB... VERY interesting indeed

Is there anyone having issues with the gpu getting really hot? If I play any decent games I can only play for 20-30min then it gets so hot it just reboots the laptop. Anyone else having this issue? If so any suggestions on how to cool it?

I'm having issues with my AS8951G overheating. The vents appear to be clear and the fan is working.

I have blown air (not at a huge pressure) and sucked air through the vents and exhaust port, and have
applied a soft brush to the limited areas that I can reach.

Hasn't helped much. Idle temps are high sixties and 45-50% CPU usage sees it top 95 deg.

Can't convert a video and surf the net at the same time.

It appears that, to access the fan, the entire 'back' of the machine must be removed. Anyone
know how to do this safely? I'm not clumsy, or a novice, I just don't want to break anything by
forcing or twisting where I shouldn't.

I don't really want to have to take it to the shop, just need some advice from someone who's
    had the 'back' off successfully.

Someone please help with advice or links....

    Thanks.

    Kat.

Hi disassembling or cleaning vents wont help ...
    Your vents are clean ..
It is CPU + GPU overheating .. and weak cooling ..

You need something like THIS !

No, there's definitely a problem. This thing has NEVER run this hot previously, and has never needed any kind of external cooling. It's approx. 11 months old.

Even running multiple browsers (one is TOR) makes it overheat. As does running ANY benchmarking program. This is definitely not normal for this machine.

The fan is working, and the machine does NOT sit flat on a desk, it has a stand with PLENTY of air circulating.
ATM, I have IE10 (8 tabs) Firefox (2 tabs) and TOR (2 tabs) running. Nothing else. And temps are in the mid 80s. and rising. CPU usage is negligible.

    So u havent modded it?
If not take it to RMA
    But same was wth me..
When i bought it i didnt need any extra cooling
I was playing crysis 2 and laptop was very hot but laptop never turned off..
And nowdays it turns off even if i play light games such legend of grimrock it turns of cos fans doesnt spin up on max.. i have ugraded cpu to 2860 but i don think it causinf that..
The problem might be in nvidia drivers..
I havent tested it but it is probably that ..
Install back original acer drivers from acer drivers site and test it

    No, not modded at all.

But I solved the problem. I just needed air at a higher pressure.

Gave it a blast of around 50psi thru the fan slots, a huge cloud of muck blew out of the exhaust port, and it settled down to around 50-55 deg straight away.

I was amazed at how much rubbish actually came out....

Thanks for your help and input.

    Cheers.

Not only is Acer not selling 18.4" laptops. They only have one 1920 x 1080 resolution laptop. Most are 1600 x 900 or 1366 c 768.

The makers seem to think everyone wants small ultra-books or tablets. If that's what I'd wanted, I wouldn't have paid a premium price for this thing.

Basically, I bought this because I wanted a powerful replacement for my old desktop machine.

    If I'd wanted a smart-phone replacement, I'd have bought a tablet or ultra-book.

I'm not a 'social-networker' so my 4.5" Android smart-phone (Gingerbread, with Wi-Fi) is more than adequate for my 'mobile' computing needs.

Acer is giving me an Acer AS5951G as a replacement for my previous laptop covered under warranty. It's got a i7 2630M and a Nvidia GT 555m. Just got a few questions for y'all.

Should I take out the touchpad when gaming so it doesn't get too hot?

Should I overclock when gaming? if so, what program do you guys recommend?

Is there a way to adjust fan speed?

Looks like a great laptop that I'm getting. Cheers guys!

Acer's doing the same with mine, and sending a 5951g this week. Thanks for all the great info in this thread made me feel confident about getting it.

Quick question, I know acer never updates their drivers so assuming its still on old drivers, is the new nvidia gt 555m driver 310.90 safe? Anyone test it out on the 5951g or do you recommend sticking with the safe older driver? I saw some previous posts from earlier in this thread about the 285 driver update was safe, just wondering if anyone had any experience with the updated drivers.

    Thanks

    Hi all,
I have the same problem explained by pomak at page 62....Without reason the touchpad light starts blinking - as it were detached - and the directions of the pointer go upside-down -
I tried pairing, switch-off, ..... but I cannot solve the problem...after few minutes the light starts blinking again.... And the problem is not the touchpad module as I have just bought a new one from acer....
    Anyone can help me?

Just a note on experimenting w/ 24 GB RAM:

I'd seen some notes here of folks running w/ 24 or 32 Gig, so I thought I'd give it a shot (I've got a 8951g-9630 model). I run Win7 Pro, so it will recognize the extra RAM. Unfortunately, while it boots and sortof runs, it definitely has issues. The bootup time takes much longer (I've got a SSD drive thats normally very fast to boot). The fan runs constantly (somewhat expected w/ the extra power draw, but annoying). Biggest issues are that the wifi seems to get effected (I normally get a solid 300Mbps; w/ extra RAM, it maxes at 150, and drops out frequently). And I think the video gets impacted; when I tried playing a simple MP4 video, the system locks up hard.

Thankfully RAM is cheap these days, but it still hurts to drop $80 on a gamble that didn't pay off. sigh...

Have any of you got the new acer updater for the epowertray.exe since Windows keeps saying it's not compatible with the new updates?

Wondering if it forces you to do a bios 1.13 update. Also wondering if it has any improvement. Any help would be useful.

    Hi,

I would also like to contribute a great find I did (for 5951g, may also work for 8951g): a bios with a lot of features unlocked, based on the enwest bios available on the acer site.
    [UNLOCKED] Acer 5951G-6879

Now, I was hoping this would include an option for setting the power state of the usb ports during sleep. Sadly, I haven't found that option yet.

What I would like to do is wake the laptop with external keyboard (used as a desktop replacement, with a 27" screen and external kb/mouse)
But the usb ports power down in sleep, making it impossible to resume from standby via usb. Anybody had any luck with this?

Just a bit of an update/progress report on my AS8951G.

After 14 months of continuous use, and after having been 'side-graded' to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit
in January, the machine has yet to give me the slightest hint of any trouble.

The overheating issue I posted about a few months ago (and which can/will happen to any laptop)
was fixed with a blast of high-pressure air. The problem hasn't reoccurred as the fan/vents get a
blast of HP air once a month or so.

Future plans are to fit an SSD, and another 8 GB of RAM.

I really can't speak highly enough of this lovely little (???) machine. It's certainly not going to be
replaced by a tablet in the foreseeable future. But something similar to this, but with a high-end
Ivy Bridge CPU and the latest GeForce mobile GFX would be nice....

    Cheers!

The First Thing that i do after buying the Ethos 8951G,Was to install 2 SSD H.D.,...and the Hacer do not Recognice them,so do not Start...Looks that in some Countries can be Done and not in others coutries ! Mine was bought in Spain. The Models Adverticed in U.K.,comes with 1 SSD and 1 Standard H.D.
I was very Frustated because i had Bought 2 SSD Disks for the Hacer Ethos.I can not understand why,if they use the same Chipset and Motheboard.

QUOTE=Katanyavich;9187668]Just a bit of an update/progress report on my AS8951G.

    Cheers!

Hi I would like to know if anyone has got the 8951g to run 32gb of ram upgrading windows 7 to ultimate. Also has anyone upgraded the gpu (bga). Replaced and upgaded, as I would have access to a electronics shop that does reballing with new chips. if so does bios need to be unlocked. Thanks

    My system is a 8951g-9824. i7-2630qm 16gb. upgrades include a samsung ssd 1tb 840 evo, a samsung m9t hhd 2tb (from a Seagate Backup Plus slim). A BLU-Ray Panasonic uj240.

PS: SSD really reduses operating temps.

hi All. Not sure if many people still visit here. I got back one of my favorite laptops, the 8951g. Was always sad to have let it go so when the chance to get one recently came up I grabbed it. Have refreshed it with an ssd and running windows 10.

My question is about the dual graphics. I cannot get the 550m to work in conjunction with the Intel HD3000. Is there some magic switch ive forgotten to enable discrete graphics or something? It will install with the latest drivers but after reboot usually get a code 43.

    Any ideas?
