The slashgear article reads more like sales copy than a genuine review. The Notebookcheck has far more detail, and especially about the screen. compare the 8951Gs review to that of the Asus G74SX. While the G74SX has a much better screen, it seems to suffer more from throttling than the 8951G does. If Acer had sprung the extra $50 for that nice of a screen the 8951G would absolutely rule the roost of personal multimedia laptops. but they gave it a meh grade screen, which is a shame in a laptop that is otherwise quite nice.

....Still not having figured out the Dolby Home Theater v4 thing.... "where!! can I find the User configure settings, like a the' graphic equalizer, (on their website they tell those customice-settings are with DBHT v4,... ---Jet I'Cant find them!!!??
----And something else,... I just openend up the back cover of the Aspire 8951G, and noticed, just 2 empty RAM-slots...?? -
From start-up (1st time on), System specs tells me there are 4-slots with already 2-slots filled with 2x2 GB RAM,
---So,.... where are Those 2 slots, with the memory?
Did acer re-arrange things, so now to get to "all 4" of the memory-slots (meaning the 2 in-use..) I have to go underneath another?? cover?? ---and where is it?..
---If Acer only gave us a manual that actually gave us some more in-depth info,... like how to figure this "new"?? memory thing out!
-----I thought it would be the same as the 8943 or at least 8950g (al 4 slots easy acsess?)
Has any of you noticed this also?,....
-----4 hours later....
Dolby ome Theater v4 Settings etc (where??),... still not figured it out
And now this Memory thing?.... ..where to digg' for the other 2 slots? -
Ray24 , for RAM It must be 4 slots (2 empty and 2x4GB)or (4X4=16GB) and for Dolby thing go control panel and sound section.
-
---@ USZ
jep, that's just what I thought it must be.
(specs said 4GB already installed,.. max upgradeable to 16GB RAM)
and checking CPU-Z it said there were indeed already 4GB of RAM installed, (2x2GB).... so I thought I could just swap those out and put in 4x4 GB
...jet opening up, I found just 2 slots ...empty..
THat's! the whole problem there must be 2 more,...I mean if there's already 2x2 GB installed!, (without any pre-installed it wouldn't start up..)
and!..... I have 2 empty slots here--right here in-front of me!
Those 2x2GB must be installed somewhere!?...
Is there any pic of how it's configured on a standard 16GB delivered 8951G
---Hope that would clarify something about this for me.
Maybe the configuration/position of the memory is somehow different here in Europe??..
----About Dolby thing...
hhmmm,.. I have seen the standard sound settings etc,... but not jet fron within Dolby Home Theater it self....
guess I have to re-check it again then. (maybe I somehow overlooked it?)
--get bak on that later.
At first I -
Just did a check with different PC-Hardware monitoring software,.. like CPU-Z
to look what kind of RAM memory those 2x2 GB modules are.
this are th results:
2x 2GB HMT325S6BFR8C (Hynix RAM ---known by Acer to use them)
PC3-10600, 1333MHz
----so, next to those 2 empty RAM-slots, these two Hynix RAM modules (shown to be in slot 2 & 4) are really there.... somewhere.
I also succesfully tried installing 2x 4GB Kingston PC3-10600 ddr3 Modules in those 2 empty slots,.. slot 1 & 3
After starting the Acer up again, Windows clearly shows there is now 12GB of ddr3 1333MHz RAM installed!
So the max 16 GB sure is tru,... if only I can locate slot 2 & 4, so I can swap in those Hynix 2GB moduls for 2 more 4GB Kingston modules.
---Hopesomeone can figure this out,... so I won't have to take the whole backcover + extra's apart looking for it!
--ahh well, seeing the back-cover,... I guess I still have to remove it if ever I have to get to the other 2 RAM slots....
@USZ
For the Dolby Home Theater v4 controls I went to --control panel and sound section... but nothing except Realtek HD-Audio configuration, in which there is also no ---Advanced Dolby functions..
Googl'ing to see if I can find something,...
I found pictures of the Same Dolby Film/Music/Game settings-buttons -screen/menu...
---But on those pictures there is something present,..that seems to be missing at my Dolby sceen...namely
--- left, beneath Dolby Home Theater v4 Logo, there is a button called
-----------"..Profile Editor" ....!!
That´s what I am missing!!
---why is it missing??.. It's the same on the 8950G,..
Am I missing something?.... do I need to install update something first? -
Well,.. Finally figured out the Dolby Home Theater thing..
It seems Acer desided to use a strippd-down version of Dolby Home Theater v4..
No customizeble options for us consumers...
--No Intelligent Equalizer:
--No Graphic Equalizer:
--No Audio Optimizer:
--No Audio Regulator:
--Volume Maximizer:
--No etc.....
Just the option to choose between 3 pre-customized settings ...Movie/Music/Game..
What where they thinking??!
Putting such a great 5.1 surround system in it,.. jet without giving us any option to Fine-Tune it to our own taste!
So far, I love everything on the Ethos 8951G,... but this sure was/is a big tumbs--DOWN from Acer.
---------Luckily, (after quite a search on the web, I found the Full Dolby Home Theater v4 Driver, (including in it all extra's!!)
At first it didn't install,... on any of Acer's Realtek HD-Audio drivers, without the loss of 5.1 surround sound...
--(on one it did,.. but things in DHTv4 didn't work properly...)
Eventually after another long search, ..I found the right Realtek HD-Audio driver!
Now I have The Full Dolby Home Theater v4 + fully functional Realtek Driver working on my Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G...
--And Trust me when I say,... with the Full Dolby Home Theater version-4, the already great 5.1 surround system in the 8951G performs a whole lot more Beautiful!! --- Tumbs UP for DOLBY!!!! wowi.
Just one problem left to solve..... The 2 missing, jet somewhere under the remaining back-cover RAM slots 2 & 4, with 2x2 GB of memory.. (see my earlier posts...)
--to be continued soon,... I hope.. -
RAY24, what about display? the notebookcheck.net Review say that the display is realy BAD!!!!
-
Anyone knows, does the 5951g have a free mini pci-e slot?
Iknow that the 8951g has one full, next to the half one (for wlan), ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMa6rEpFotk#t=2m33s ), but what about the 5951g? -
The Display on mine seems good,.. jet I must say, I to rather had its brightness higher.
Still its not 'Really BAD.
(comparing it to my 27" iMac screen, with its wide angle views & brightness)
I say the screen is Good, the angle view (left to right), isn't way' as bad as it seemed to be on their machine.
Top to bottem,... is offcourse not as left to right..
but not 'really bad' either.
---I must say aswell, that it seems like Notebookcheck, net (originaly the German site did) reviewed not a really "in good shape" model
---kind of a bad lemon,
(Heating problems, CPU-Throttling problems, really Bad screen!...)
I have had none of those problems,
---The notebook stays much cooler than theirs..
---The screen (--I do a lo of Video/Picture Editing on it, so I always put some time into checking the screen.--)
..it doesn't look as bad (or un-bright) as in their test
---considering colour calibration,.. it offcourse isn't made for PERFECT colour displaying.... (so as with any notebook, I Still change colour settings on printer/and screen, etc to have good callibrated prints..)
------Just a note ..... don't take the pictures from their screen-test as look point-of-view.., cause they are way darker/worse than the screen really is!---
Notebookchek just don't know how to be consistant in taking pictures with their tests??....---using the same ilumination & good ISO-- etc..)
----I've also done runn some heavy tests, to check my CPU.
And again, unlike theirs,... mine has no Problem!
Got much better scores!... An No!! throttling prolems what so ever!...
Also testing my GT 555m, gave somewhat higher scores than theirs..
So... I don't think you should take the review from Notebookcheck, a 100%..
---They really got a Bad Lemon,...
I really think they should have at least had a couple machines to runn the tests... just to be sure..
(which actually should be done with every new notebook,..)
---but then again,... Acer, nore any other company, isn't going to give them multiple machines to test.....
So,...
No- Heating Problem here.
No- CPU-Throttling here.
and..
As of your question?... "what about the display?"
its Not a 'Really bad' screen,..
---Nice wide angle-views, ...its just not as bright (more brigter than) i had hoped it would be,... still it isn't Really BAD either....
To get a good hand on the screen quality, the best thing you could do, is go somewhere, where you can check the machine out.
--I've had other people who went and did just that, and they to said the machines screen didn't look as worse as Notebookchecks review said..
--In fact, some called it rather amazing!..
YES, there are notebooks with better (Brighter) screens,.. but than you have to consider, what do those notebooks don't have,.. that this one has...
---is it worth sacrificing other specs..?
---and/or Is it worth paying the extra $,€ ??
More than this I can't help you out with the screen.
Again.... Best thing to do,.. go check it out somewhere and see for youself..
Hope I could help. -
--@ Sandros.
Well, does these pictures give you an answer?

@ Sandros,
it seems so?? -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yeah, but what do you intend to use it for?
-
Yeah, thanks.
I wont use that in the near future, but I want a SB notebook with eGPU capability (still don't know which one)...
Maybe next summer, with the hd7xxx and gtx6xx graphic cards, and the upgraded PCI-e 2.0 stuff, I'll give it a try... -
Hey you guys, I just found out how Acer placed the memory 4-slots in the Acer 8951G ---is the same with every model.
2 easily accessed under the back-cover. and 2,... jep underneath the Keyboard.... (need to take that off + some little cover to access them)
Check this link,.. here they took him appart piece by piece...

Well the problem with the LCD screen is viewing angles. If you have the proper viewing angle the picture is beautifull. Also the sunlight can make the screen harder to see. -
The average maximum brightness on the G74SX is 352cd/m2 while the 8951G gets only 178cd/m2. Black level on the G74SX is half that of the 8951G.
These are both TN displays, with relatively poor viewing angles. But the TN in the Asus is much better than the TN in the 8951G, and is so much better for things like movie viewing, being brighter and having much higher contrast. -

I've had my AS8951G for a week now, overall I'm very happy with it (coming from an HP DV8, it's a big step up). I've looked everywhere trying to find cable for the second hard drive with no luck. I ordered the cable for the 8950G but it's not compatible. Anyone have any ideas?
There's a little tab on the HDD 1 cable with the following codes:
ZYQ DDQZYGHD000 (first Q might be a G, second Q might be a 0)
ANR-ANR 110323AD06
Several people have said they called Acer asking about a second cable and were told their model doesn't support a second drive, which is bull of course. Not sure why they don't want anyone adding a drive. -
Just a suggestion, but can someone please post an english Youtube review of this laptop, everything on youtube is in non-english.
-
@ SAMMCC
No problem!! ---I also put here for you the install instructions of how I installed them + some user info /manual
(its quite some reading, but to have all things work correctly, and get some understanding of the program, I suggest you read it all ---hehe!

(If you need to restart again,... do so..)
4: Once Installed You may notice that the sound isn't really 5.1 anymore... considering you've uninstalled the original RealtekHD Audio-Driver, that is correct.

Okay, apparently Notebook Solutions has the hd cable in stock, I ordered one:
Acer original cable - AC44753 - $24.95US : Notebook Solutions, Parts, Service & Support
they also say they have very limited stock of the hard drive brackets which I also ordered:
Acer original bracket - AC44033 - $19.95US : Notebook Solutions, Parts, Service & Support
I asked if they come in pairs or if you have to order two (the brackets fit on each end of the hard drive so you need two), haven't heard back from them yet.
----------------------
WOW Ray, you da man! Thanks so much for that. I'm downloading now, I'll let you know how it turns out.
----------------------
Yes, worked perfectly - your instructions are excellent. Makes a huge difference in the sound. Thanks so much! -
I love pretty much everything about this laptop other than the touchpad. I can't believe there haven't been any comments on this.
The pad is a little too sensitive for my tastes, but I could live with that if there was a way to disable tap-to-click. Even as I am typing this message, I accidently bump it and suddenly I'm typing in another paragraph.
Another problem is that the pad is unstable. If I hold down a button and drag the scroll bar and pause for a moment to read, the page wobbles up and down a little, enough to make it very difficult to read the text.
There are NO trackpad-specific options, such as sensitivity and gestures. It took me forever to discover that it actually is possible to scroll by using two fingers, which I find awkward and unreliable.
Acer only provides/supports the generic microsoft mouse driver and I went through level 2 support to engineering and the ultimate response was "that's just what we decided to do."
I had assumed that there would be an outcry about this, but it seems that not many others mind it. If it bothers you, please call acer and maybe if enough people call in, they will give provide proper drivers. If you do call, level I will give you a lot of useless advice about loading drivers and doing a factory restore. I don't think they will pass anyone on to level two unless you have 'done'a factory restore. The folks at level 1 are nice enough, but they don't seem to have ever used a computer themselves.
By the way, I tried installing various synaptics and alps drivers, with no luck. Apparently, this is a propriatary system. -
--Can you believe why Acer thought of not putting that ful package on it?!
Anyways..
Glad I could help!
ENJOY!!
I'm in the same situation of putting in the 2nd hard-drive myself.
Would love to know if those parts are O.K. --I hope so--
--I live in Europe myself, and have checked for those partnumbers here, but so far no-luck (maybe in time)
--Luckily 'notebook solutions' ship worldwide!
Ok let me know! -
), so I never thought of commenting on it ... my touchpad is permenantly disabled ...
When testing the touchpad in it's "remote" mode (useful for presentations, I thought) I found it to be insensitive to my finger movements ... so I won't ever be using it.
I use a Targus retractable travel mouse & I love it ... got one with my old laptop & when I got this laptop I immediately went out & bought a new one.
As far as the screen/graphics comments are concerned ... I think what we should all keep in mind when evaluating other peoples comments is that we all come from different prior systems and have different criteria of what determines OK, Good or Great ... personally I'm very happy, but I don't do graphic editing or gaming ... I just watch movies [when not actually working]
As with all things ... YMMV -
Specs say this laptop has Bluetooth, but I'm having trouble finding it. Any ideas?
It has the bluetooth sticker next to the broadcomm wlan sticker on the bottom, both directly above the ports. I have one port empty, which leads me to believe the bluetooth card was not included, for whatever reason (unless they both are on the same card). My specific model is the 8951g-9600. Acer.com lists it as having bluetooth. -
I do alot of Video-editing on it,... and although it doesn't have a Huge wide-view angle, or Intense brightness,.. coming from my older notebook (which is indeed a big point of criteria) its for me a lot better, considdering the brightness/colour..
--and as far as Wide angle view... unless someone is planning on watching a movie from a distance (doubt that)...
--or do so with a bunch of friends... (why not just using a BIG LED-tv??)....
I guess using the screen normally,... (work-place depending) ..but sitting behind it ..as someone 'normally' does sitting behind a laptop'...
this screen can indeed be beautiful enough'..
Jet as you've said, it offcourse depends what prior system we come from, and what we deem as Good or great for the things we want to use it for...
Or how to turn it on??
My model as yours, (but European) has also one port empty, jet I Do! have Bluetooth,...
Have you checked the button front-side left?....
When you click it,
A little "switch" screen will appear on screen, where you can slide/click each WLAN & Bluetooth... on,...or off... -
The only buttons on my laptop are the power, keyboard light, quick launch, and clearfi. If you are referring to the silver button on the hinge, on my machine it is does nothing. There is apparently no way to turn on/off wifi with hardware.
It seems the European version has many features the US version does not. -
Gorilla, Ray is talking about the tiny button below the wifi light (farthest left light) in the front of the machine, to the left of the card slot. Press it and it pops up a dialog box where you can turn on/off wifi and bluetooth.
-
-
-
I'm sure, given it's proprietary features, that they would have to come up with their own driver for it so it's going to take some yelling to get them to do that.
I didn't realize that you could scroll using two fingers; now in practicing it, it seems to be more responsive if you separate your fingers by an inch or so.
I don't have that problem with the page vibrating, maybe try changing the pointer speed? -
Another small thing. Has anyone noticed that the left speaker is located more towards the center of the screen than right one. At first I thought it wasn't working, but after using a fader I discovered that placement just isn't symmetrical. -

Also they aren't really smart when they type things, ;like the Heat/testing
they say...
Quote: "the touchpad measured a cool 87 degrees, the keyboard a reasonable 89 degrees, and the bottom a chilly 84 degrees Fahrenheit."
Before I read the last one at the end, ..I was like "WHAT!!"
and more things like that...
Then I read: Toggling the Dolby Home Theater software on and off made little difference in the sound quality.
hahaha!!, ..if only Acer had Pre-installed the Full Dolby Home Theater v4 tuning software (like I did..) That makes the sound Way!! better,..
----it makes the Dell's XPS line.... sound.. like.... 'lame'
all in all,.. this review is much like other reviews.. (eccept for the pictures...) -
Well, the first thing that immediately caught my eye were the photos. Those aren't photos of the 8951g, that's the 8950g.
-
Ha! they've changed the pictures that came with their review,... now they are truly from the 8951G...!!
-----it seems they read this forum!----
----jet one picture isn't from the 8951,.. the one showing the back-cover... it's 2-part,.. and a removable battery???.... Guess that's still the 8950... -
Yeah, pretty lame review. Wrong on a bunch of things.
I got my Intel 622AN.HMWWB mini-pc card yesterday, replaced the wireless n card that came with it and now definitely more bars and I can use the 5 ghz band. Downloads are noticeably faster. Still waiting on the hard drive cable and brackets, I'll let y'all know when those come in if they work. -
----yeah lame review indeed....
--I was thinking also about replacing the wireless n card
The Intel 622AN.HMWWB mini-pc card... --is much better
Did the replacing go easy, (say'...just plug and play?)
..... and did you need to install another driver for it?
Look forward to your findings about the 2nd hard-drive cable + brackets... -
Yeah, way tough...turn off battery switch, unscrew the six screws and take off the back, unscrew the one screw in the mini card and it kind of springs out a little, pull it out and pull off the two antenna plugs and put them on the Intel card, plug that card into the slot and push it down whilst screwing it in, replace cover and screws, switch power back on. Reboot and plug into a wired connection or use a USB wireless dongle, do a Windows Update and you're set (at least with SP1, not sure if that makes a difference).
-
wups, looks like newegg is out of stock on the card right now:
Newegg.com - Intel 622AN.HMWWB Wireless Adapter 6200 Centrino Advanced-N Mini PCI Express Up to 300Mbps Wireless Data Rates 64/128-Bit WEP, WPA, WPA2 -
----Including the Intel Wireless card. (got at least 8 online/stores to choose from..!!) -
which wireless adapter is better and will work with 8951G?==> Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 OR Killer Wireless-N 1102
-
I'd go for 6230. This whole Killer thing is just for noobs- it's an Atheros radio chip with a new badge. This whole thing about latency being reduced and so on is laughable. If your Internet connection has high pings no card is going to help and if you ping your router you're gonna see it's 1-2ms so there's nothing to reduce in the first place.
-
-
622AN.HMWWB is just an Intel 6200 while 6230 is 6200+ Bluetooth so it's basically the same card with or without Bluetooth.
-
So considering the Bluetooth capability in the Acer 8951G is it better to go for the 6230? -
If you don't need Bluetooth or already have a module in your 8951G just go for 6200, otherwise buy a 6230.
-
Does the WIFI module in the 8951G come with Bluetooth on it?... if so, replacing that one, will meen I have to go for the 6230, to keep Bluetooth working..? -
