    Hello,

On Friday evening (tomorrow), I will go to Best Buy in Montreal, Canada and purchase an Acer 6390 16" laptop, for the low, low price of 600$ (yay!). I have no doubt that the Best Buy employee will push hard to have me buy their 2 or 3-year Performance Service Plan.

From browsing the forums, my understanding is that I can purchase extended warranty directly from Acer. I tried finding information about Acer's extended warranty on the Acer web site, but I was only able to find the page that allows me to register my product and apply for extended warranty. I was unable to find information on what Acer's warranty actually covers.

I tried the following link, after perusing the forums, but it's dead.
    https://secure.tx.acer.com/findsystem/ExtendedWarranties.aspx

    So! My questions are:

    * Where can I find the exact description of the coverage provided by Acer's extended warranty? (so that I can compare with Best Buy's). To be clear, I'm only interested in the Canadian version.

    * Are there different kinds of extended warranty? For example, 2-year vs. 3-year, basic vs. full, etc.

    * MOST IMPORTANT: do I need to do anything at the time of purchase (e.g. get some special form from Best Buy), or can I apply for Acer's extended warranty on-line, after my purchase? How much time do I have?

From browsing the forums, I believe the answers to these questions are that I have 15 days from the time of purchase, and all I need to do is to input the laptop's serial number on Acer's website. I do NOT need to do anything special at Best Buy, other than to buy the laptop. Is that correct?

    Thanks for you time.

    Cheers,

    Hello,

I have an Acer as well, and almost at the end of my first year...

Acer offers me an additionnal 2yr total protection bundle (including accidental damage) for 199$ cdn... I read the fine print, and i found the following line:

"There will be a deductible after the first service repair per year under this program."

Now, the thing is, I busted my earphone jack a while ago, and I never bothered sending it to Acer for repair (since I knew they would never believe it just fell apart by itself!!! it is too obvious that some moron walked away from his laptop with his headphones still on his head... )

The deadline is approaching (i bought my laptop november 5th, 2008) and i am not sure if i should buy this extended warranty or not...

Anyone here who had experience with this kind of warranty service? How much do you think the deductible would be for such a repair?

if you have it repaired for damage more than once in a 12 month period the second time there will be a deductible. this does not apply to normal failures like bad hard drives, etc.

e.g. In January the screen is cracked and repaired under the ext. warranty, and in July your spill coffee on it then the July repair will require the deductible.

oh, the deductible...it should be $150 USD

Thanks for your quick reply techiediva,

    Now i understand...

I went and bought the extended warranty on a canadian website, onhop.ca, for even less than the suggested price from Acer!!! The total cost, tax & shipping included, is 199.29 canadian dollars. I think this is great, I had given up on using my headphone jack ever again, but sending it for repair with this warranty service will end up costing me only a few bucks, and as a bonus I will get 2 more years of total protection from failure and, most importantly, from my clumsy hands...
