Hi, I have had my 3200 now for about 3 month and I have had nothing but problems. It all started when I downloaded service pack 2 and that caused the computer to crash and freeze up all the time...called support and they told me to uninstall. After doing that I had CPU problems (sometimes running way low, but never at 1800) and support told me to reinstall. After doing that...I had crashes where the computer just torned off and it was much worse when it ran on battery power. Called again and they told me to reinstall and that left me to where I am now...with a computer that still has CPU problems...a computer that crashes still, though not as often (but I have learned to save [ :)]) and a new mouse problem. Since I do not believe support anymore I was wondering if anyone out there had the same problems or really think the SP2 can cause such a problem??? Thanks for your help and if you are thinking of Acer I would be a bit worried...I wish I had gone with an IBM :(

i would just do a system restore. Work at a tech bench where tons of ppl had problems after installing service pack 2. Then, try installing via stripstreaming it. (VIA CD) Hopefully that would work.

Yes, you should do a system restore. I have used this many times to save my skin.

I have tried to upgrade my Aspire 2003 WLMi to SP2 via a download from the Microsoft web site. The installation failed half way and that corrupted my system to such an extent that I could not even boot up. My only resort was to boot up with an Acronis TrueImage Boot CD and restore my previously backed up image file that I had done immediately before the upgrade.

Later I tried upgrading to SP2 again using a CD delivered by the local Microsoft agent. This worked beautifully and now the laptop accesses the internet significantly faster.

Thank you for your help guys, but do you really think that the laptop can have such major problem because of SP2?? I really want Acer to take back the laptop and service it. By the way I have tryed the restore and it seem to not do anything for the problems, infact I have reinstalled from the bottom 3 times now!

Yes, SP2 can cause havoc - my own experience testifies to that. However, the 3200 is supposed to be a very good laptop. In fact, I had a tough time deciding between the Ferrari 3000 and the Aspire 2003 earlier this year.

My suggestion would be to get the system up and running perfectly as it probably did on day 1. Then install Acronis TrueImage 8 and Partition Magic 8.02 (check what the latest versions are first). OK, it might put a little dent in your wallet, but I think it's worth it. The dent will heal.

Use Partition Magic to partition the hard disk into C and D. C is for the OS and should be much smaller than D but big enough for the OS and several large applications that you intend to install. Then use TrueImage to save partition C as an image file in D. Create a boot CD too, and set the laptop to boot up on CD first.

Then create a system restore point manually. You could call it "Installed SP2" or whatever. Then install SP2 from a CD - Microsoft should send this to you at no charge.

If serious errors result, at least you can use the TrueImage boot CD to restore the image file back to partition C to get back the system that you had originally - takes about 15 minutes to half an hour.

Anyway, this is what I would do if I had your problem. I hope it works for you too.[ :)]

Thanks for the advise...sounds like a real good idea. I think Nero, which I have already allows me to make an image aswell. But I still think that there is something wrong because after my last reinstall for Acer CDs without using SP2 the system still crashes :( :( :( and I have varriable CPU speeds showing up in the windows environment. But I think the idea with the image and making the C: drive smaller is a great idea! thanks for the help!

Hi, you might want to check http://csd.acer.com.tw/SI/Download2.nsf/NotebookWeb?OpenView&Start=1&Count=240&Expand=25.1#25.1 for bios updates, but I have to warn you that updating the bios is risky, especially if your system is damaged.

Check carefully the fixes each update applies, and if you think it can fix things, do the flash.
