    hello.

after finally managing to wipe my ferrari clean from the factory settings, and start again fresh with windows xp. i have noticed now i cannot play a game for more than 5mins without the laptop over heating and shutting down.

i know this cannot be good for the laptop. so i ordered a Antec Antec Notebook Cooler, of amazon. and works well.. but... is not enough.

but i think either the thermal paste is wearing off.
or there is alot of dust inside it.
because i use to be able to play games on it for along time (all day)

is there any threads/websites/links that anyone has. on fixing this HEAT issue.
any threads or websites that can show me how to take appart the 3400. and apply the thermal paste i have to the processor... and any other places?
i bought some Artic Silver 5 paste?

has anyone else had problems with there laptops shutting down.?
    during gameplay?
    how did you fix it?

please help me on this matter. i have had the laptop for a couple of years now, and its been rather fine up till now.
so im hopeing its a heat issue and not a problem inside.

thank your for your time, reading this.

p.s i just did a search and downloaded Mobmeter, installed on laptop...

    my idle stuff says...

    frequency - 2.03GHZ
    Temp - 42.0c
    charge rate - 21.31w
    HDD Temp - 33.0c

    is this normal... or idle?

    regards chez

You might want to read through the cooling guide, although you have taken some steps already.

I had heat problems with my Asus A6Va. I cleaned dust inside and installed newest version of bios and the whole problem went away.

I think the bios update did the trick for me because there wasn't too much dust inside it

You can get the BIOS from the link below.

    http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/ferrari3400.html

Bear in mind, that if the BIOS is installed incorrectly, it can render the motherboard useless, and the computer may not start up at all. In that case, you will require a new motherboard, or a new EEPROM. Follow the instructions carefully, however, then nothing should untoward should happen.

i downloaded the file from the link.

the read me says only this...
"To fix the system will get blue screen when system is cold booting.

    1.Winflash Version:
Download the attach file and unzipped it.
Please put .WPH file into Winflash utility to flash BIOS

    2. DOS Version:
    1: Create a bootable disk.
2: Extract the ZIP file to this bootable disk
3: Insert the bootable disk into your system, then boot.
    4: Run P.bat file"

is there any step by step method. or a forum post on someone else upgrading there bios. the read me isnt that great in the file.

    cheers chez

there are some bios upgrades that optimise heat management but none remove the problem of heat from the unit; it definately sounds like the unit is clogged with dust.
Its quite an awkward unit to take apart in comparison more modern units and sadly your cant get at the thermal module without removing the LCD module and the upper cover from the unit.

if you do feel confident enough to do this i would strongly suggest cleaning off the old thermal paste and applying arctic silver to it.
