I might have a chance to get an Acer Ferrari 4000 for $1200...

    Should I jump on that?

    Thanks

It certainly is a good price. Without knowing what you plan on doing with it, it is hard to say.

The price seems to be 'too good to be true'.

If you like the laptop, fits your usage & are confident of the store/seller, then go ahead.

That's an excellent deal, but considering that laptop retails for over 2k, I'd say it seems too good to be true...be careful!

Here are the specs, I think they all look as they should, but if you guys could just verify that to me that I'm not missing anything real obvious or something...

    OS Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
Processor AMD Turion" 64 Mobile Technology ML-37
    1MB L2 cache, 2.0GHz
    Memory 1GB (512/512) DDR333 SDRAM
    Storage 100GB hard drive
    Integrated DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive
5-in-1 card reader for optional MultiMediaCard", Secure Digital card, Memory Stick®, Memory Stick PRO" or xD-Picture Card"

    USB 1.44MB3 floppy drive
    TFT Display 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)
    Graphics ATI® MOBILITYTM RADEON® X700 graphics, 128MB DDR
Connectivity 802.11b/g WLAN, Bluetooth®, gigabit LAN, V.92 modem

Also, he want's to use a money transfer service. I've never done this before so I don't know how well it works if anyone has used these and could tell me how secure they are that would be great.

He said he doesn't need all the money until I have the laptop and am satisfied with it. Not sure what he wants on the downpayment. I will keep you posted on that.

    Thanks
    Will

Are you getting it from ebay?

The only thing out-of-the-ordinary in those specifications is that the ferrari does not come with a floppy drive. Double check that, if it is included it would have to be external.

It says USB Floppy Drive so it is external.

    This is a SCAM!

DO NOT BUY THIS OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MONEY!

If you are transfering the money via Western Union or other such transfer you will lose it. I have seen hundreds of such scams on cars, motorcycles and other expensive items.

If it's within Ebay and PayPal, you have certain level of protection, any other way, and you're just throwing your money away. I'm assuming this guy (the scammer) is from overseas as well.

Please do yourself a favour and don't try it.

Do you think I should try it via paypal if I could do it that way?

    I personally wouldn't.

This guy does not have a laptop. He also doesn't have morals. He just wants your cash and the emails will end there. You will have NO recourse. He is probably not located in Canada or the US (probably not in the UK either).

Where did you hear of the ad? Did he contact you?

He said that he lives in Florida. He contacted me after I posted a wanted ad on another forum. I do have pictures of the laptop with a paper with his name on them...Of course that could have been photoshopped in.

    Advice?

    Thanks
    Will

Fagiddaboudit! My Daddy always told me that if your careful, you'll usually get you pay for... you never get what you don't pay for. If you deal with this guy you'll almost surely get hosed. And, after the feed back you've gotten here, you'll deserve it.

The pictures are throwing me off a bit. If he doctored those, he's really a master scammer.

Perosnally, I wouldn't do it. But it's up to you.

    Good luck

The scam is the money transfer thing. I've seen these before - it sounds like you can "try before you buy" but really your money is going to a fake account.

Buy a new unit with a warranty. If you really want to buy a used or discount unit then at least buy it from an eBay seller with a good rating.

He did say I only would have to pay $500 up front. Then I'd send the rest after I got the laptop...

Is there anyway to verify the account?

Don't do it! You'll just loose the $500. Think about it...suppose you receive the laptop after paying $500, what's stopping you from not paying the rest? It doesn't make sense. 100% scam.

The pics are real and he has the laptop, but he uses them to rip people off for $500...
