Hello-
I am about to buy a Ferrari 4005, but first I wanted to get some opinions from the Ferrari owners out there. Please post these kind of comments on this thread:
1. Problems or annoyances with your Ferrari...
- the flourescent inverter was/is broken out of the box. this means that the screen will flicker if the bightness is brought down, but fine otherwise. i've needed the notebook since i've purchased it and haven't talked to acer about it yet
2. Amazing things that make you love you Ferrari...
everything: looks - classy and flashy at the same time, weight - pretty light for it's size and specs, size - screen looks waaay bigger than it is. people often ask if it is a 17" notebook, speed - no other computer has felt this fast since i've been using the ferrari - even pentium Ms, cool temp - running on max battery will leave the notebook cool - perfect for document work on your lap, ports - so many and such good placement, keyboard - curve is great, perfect loudness of the keys, short travel makes me feel like i can type really fast, touchpad - nice and large - four-way scroll button has become indespensible, bluetooth mouse - while not for gaming it is free and works great for me - runs at least 2 weeks without a charge and i've never run out of batteries on it, batter life - so long - i'm getting 3.5 hrs regularly with heavy useage and wireless on and full screen brightness (see question 1)
3. Software issues with your Ferrari (drivers, etc.)... no software issues except that i had to update the synaptics driver to have the scroll button work in mozilla firefox
4. Screen quality of your Ferrari (this one is important to me)... the screen is amazing, i can look at it for hours on end without getting a headache and the colours are very rich. the contrast is amazing and i feel as though each individual colour is painted right on the monitor. my colleague has the 700m with it's much-touted screen yet she is being cheated out of seeing all of the information on the screen. for example, my "my yahoo" page has the carbon-fibre background and i can see the weave pattern very well - it looks great, but she cannot see it at all. on her LCD it looks all black. changing the display settings did no good either.
Also, I bought this computer mostly to do work for school and i like to work with a desk lamp for my papers and if my screen were glossy i would not be able to see the screen with the desk lamp on.
Thanks everyone. Hope to hear all your comments soon.
Enjoy your purchase!
ps. laptop logic just published an article on the AMD turion that makes me very happy that i went with AMD over Centrino - check it out if you haven't yet. -
Thank you for your comments. I am glad to hear that the screen is high quality. Please everyone put some of your opinions on this post. Thanks

I don't own one but want one and plan to buy one used in the future (1-2yrs) or the next model. I'm hoping the next version (and wish this one had) come with a 7200rpm hard drive that is my one complaint about this model-the hard drive.
Also the next one should have a 17in screen! -
the seagate 100gb 5400rpm drive has performance very close to the 60gb 7200rpm drive as the platter is much denser. check out the hard drive sticky in this forum.
as for the 17" screen, this notebook is more of a portable gamer rather than a DTR. if you want a heavy, powerful gamer get a dell XPS2. if you want the whole package get a ferrari. -
I had my ferrari for the last 1 week now and i absolutely love it. After ordering it, i thought i paid more and should have gone with a similar acer turion based model with a x700(with 64mb) , but after using my current ferrari i am sure i made the right choice.
Its light, and gives easily 3.5hours on battery. While on AC it feels a little warm, but on battery it runs really cool. It takes a max of about 20-22wh and so gives about 3.5 on a 70+wh battery
Aesthetically it looks really cool!
I love the speed and its definitely faster than the r51(p-m) or the zd7000(p4) i used many times before.
BTW some of the programs might not work. One of them is Matlab 7.0(R14). I found the reason, you have tomake an environment variable BLAS_VERSION to atals_athlon.dll . Looks like 'turion' is not offcially named in the .spec file for matlab.
It works gr8 in linux too. Broadcom tg3 network card module works for the broadcom netlink adapter. ndiswrapper for the wireless and SVGA works when used with the ATI driver. In short its a wonderful laptop and i feel working on a 17" screen when using the really large 1600x1050 resolution wihich is really crisp and also a 0-dead-pixed w00t ;-)
Booting is really fast, 20-25 sec to the login screen at max.
To sum it up its a very fast and medium sized laptop with a really generous and crisp screen.
Ferrari is the way to go..... -
i m thinking to buy Acer Ferrrari 4005 oso

Read some reviews of the Ferrari on the internet to see if it will be good for games. It's good to do a little of your own research...
The 4002 has a WXGA glossy screen vs the 4005's matte WSXGA+, a lower processor (ML-30) vs the 4005's ML-37, and the 4002 doesnt have as large of a hard drive (80GB 5.4k vs 100GB 5.4k) and as much RAM (512MB vs 1GB). -
how bout the comparison of price of they both? i know the processor different... 4002 currently is 1.6 GHz AMD Turion en 4005 is 2.0 GHz AMD Turion, is there make a lot of different for 0.4 GHz different?
-
Ajax, could you please explain more about the problem with matlab 7.0? I am thinking to buy a ferrari, and i work with matlab everyday.
And, how is the notebook performance? The video processing in matlab is fast? -
I just got mine yesterday.
Basically everything that people are saying about the good points is true.
Here are some of my gripes:
1. placement of plugs. I know the battery makes a large part of the back unusable for plugs, but at least one usb and the ethernet plug and maybe the monitor out plug should have went there. There are three usb plug at the very front right hand side. if you use an external mouse, thats quite annoying!
2. Fan is always on. It's not loud. But it's not silent either. Doesn't bother me too much, but is a little annoying.
3. The keyboard buttons sometimes makes strange cracking noises. I don't know if that is because it is new or if that is normal. Also I couldn't find an option to shortcut on/off of the keypad on one of the shortcut buttons.
Those are minor annoyances, but still. Also, either I am more fogiving about the external mouse, or they changed it. People complained about how the BT mouse is responding very slow. Mine seems to be ok. Sometimes it takes a milisecond to get going, but it's not really annoying. -
I agree with you on the plug placement - a minor gripe, but a legitimate one. As a result of the plug placement (and crappy mouse), I'm currently looking for another bluetooth mouse to go with it - any suggestions?
-
I just purchased my Ferrari from NewEgg and I really like it. The Bluetooth mouse works great, so I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about. The smiley-keyboard is great and comfortable, and I have not noticed any strange key click sounds.
The overall appearance of the laptop is striking, and the build quality appears superior so far. I'm very pleased with my purchase, and I think anyone else in the market for a notebook with similar capabilities will be impressed!

well no one has commented ont he games so far so i guess i will
this thing is awesome with games, i've had it for about 2 or 3 months now and it runs everything, cs source, half life 2 and im pretty sure it'll run doom3
but not only does it run the games, it runs them well, when i first installed hl2 and played i maxed out the settings and was still getting about 80 fps, remember max settings as in 1680x1050, so yeah, it'll play anything u want -
I'd also like to add that the Ferrari does not even break a sweat running Battlefield 2: Special Forces at 1024x768xMedium with 2AA.
In fact, strangely enough, it performs a lot better (as in silky smooth, rather than an occasional stutters) than my AMD 3200, 1.5GB OCZ DDR400, 160GB SATA 7200RPM, with NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT desktop.
To be honest, I really wasn't expecting the Ferrari to perform as well as it does, if for no other reason than it is a notebook computer. Now, I think my wife is eyeing my desktop as a hand-me-down replacement!
Acer Ferrari 4005 HELPPPPP!!!
