I recently have been granted a replacement for my problematic Aspire 5000. I was offered the TravelMate 8100.

I know its somewhat old but I want to know what people think of it. Like is the TravelMate 8100 superior to the Aspire 5000? I've read the reviews and I'm not really sure about some things like the processor...is it better than a Turion 64, etc. How well does Vista run on it.

Here are the specs (TM specs are slightly different):

    Acer 8104WLMi Specs

the 8100 is far far superior the the aspire 5000 (i meant to write "far" twice too)

its a very nice machine considering its age, it was the flagship model at one time. I think you'll be very happy with it when you get it.

I agree with hairy here the 8100 will "blow the doors" of an aspire 5000.

To me the biggest advantage the 8104 has is the graphics card. The x700 is far superior to that SiSM760GX garbage card. SIS is the lowest end card you can get. The 8104 also has a larger HD as well as it uses DDR2 ram which is very cheap right now.

However you should also note that the 8100 notebook you linked isn't exactly "the latest tech" being that the pentium M has been replaced now for a few years by intels core processors.

Looks like I won't be disappointed. I was also wondering which processor has the upper hand...the Pentium M or Turion?

In this case the Pentium M will be faster as that runs @ 2Ghz whereas the turion only runs @ 1.6Ghz. However beware the pentium M isn't a 64bit processor so if you want to use a 64bit version of windows it won't work, but that is the only downside to it. If you plan to use 32bit(x86) versions of windows then you will be fine :).

    7x Motherboards
    2x AMD Turions
    1x AMD Sempron
    3x Keyboards
    2x Touchpads
    3x DVD-RW
    5x LCD bezels
    5x LCD's
    3x Upper cases
    1x Lower case
    3x Cooling modules
    2x AC adapter
    5x Batteries
    3x LCD lids
    12x hinges
    2x Front panels
    5x Wireless Network Cards

and I forgot how many times it has been in the repair centre. So many times that I have forgotten.

First they said that my warranty only covers repairs and that replacements were not allowed. That was a year ago.

Now my second request was granted after getting a near-system failure, and added on top of that my past repairs.

I guess they decided it would be better to give me a new laptop since the total of my repairs probably reached $10 000+ (ok I'm exaggerating but all those components must have cost a lot)

    whoa, thats alot of problems...

I wish Acer would offer me a replacement :(

Were you still under warranty when they offered you a replacement?

If not, how did you get them to replace it?

I'm really fed up with the design flaws of my aspire 5003wlmi, as it keeps overheating, and keeps turning off every 20 mins.

I'm considering on taking legal action against acer for giving me such a hard time with this poc machine...
