    News & Notes

17-May-2012: Hi! Nowadays I'm very busy with my work & other responsibility. So, for now I don't have enough free time to do any BIOS modding. I might come back & do BIOS modding again in the future but I don't know when. For now, please go to BIOS-MODS.com for BIOS mod. Sorry. :(

Note: For Virtualization (VT-x) support, please check on Intel/AMD website to know whether your CPU does support VT-x or not. In addition to BIOS support, you also need VT-x capable processor to use Virtualization. To run 64-bit guest OS on Intel computers, you will need CPU that support 64-bit & also VT-x.

    Preface

There are a lot of BIOS MOD request forums out there but most of them only specialize in SLIC modification. Our job is to unlock hidden menu in the BIOS. I don't want to use "specialize" word here but I know the "how" to get the job done. Based on the old thread Acer Laptop with Phoenix BIOS: Enable Virtualization, I decided to open new thread which specifically deals with BIOS MOD requests.

I will help you to unlock hidden menu(s) such as Intel Virtualization Menu and Intel Speedstep Technology.

    F.A.Q:-
Q1. Who will mostly benefit from this?
A1. Users who have at least one year old notebook which have a CPU that have a capability, for example, Virtualization but it is disabled & there is no way to enable it with the original BIOS.
Q2. Is it safe to flash BIOS with modified BIOS image?
A2. In term of "flashing BIOS", the risk is the same as flashing the BIOS chip with original BIOS image. Yes & No. No, if you don't know what you're doing. Yes, if you do it properly (I recommend doing it in DOS, using USB bootable flash drive) & you know how to recover from failed BIOS flash or corrupted BIOS.

    Technical & Tutorial Lounge

Interesting posts from the old thread:-

Guide to BIOS mod for Dual-IDA

    Undo DSDT Override In Windows
For those who plan doing a BIOS + DSDT mod, most likely before reintegrating the modded DSDT, they will test their modded DSDT by loading it in registry using " asl /loadtable" command. This is called DSDT override. I bet many people are wondering how to undo DSDT override. The same question I asked to myself. If System Restore is enabled, we only need to restore to earlier state. Simple searching in the internet unfortunately doesn't lead to a correct answer. Fortunately, I found a way to undo DSDT override. We will need to delete DSDT key in registry:-
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet[B][color='Red']XXX[/COLOR][/B]\services\ACPI\Parameters\DSDT

    * where [B][color='Red']XXX[/COLOR][/B] are 001, 002, 003 & so on.

    and

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ACPI\Parameters\DSDT
Of course, always backup registry before editing one.

Possible BIOS modification - depend on original BIOS

    Our job description:-
    if possible:
    - unhide Intel VT-x/AMD-V menu
    - unhide SATA AHCI menu
    - unhide Speedstep menu
    - unhide any "harmless" menu

only by requests AND if it is possible:
    - patch DSDT table - depend on me whether it is worth or not
    - update NetworkBoot (PXE) Bios

    CPU Microcode Update Request

CPU Microcode Update only useful if notebook can boot with the CPU in question but got a Microcode Update warning message like this:-
    [IMG]
You can see an example of the problem at post #1490. Solution at post #1504. Confirmation the problem fixed at post #1506.

If notebook doesn't boot with CPU in question & didn't get the Microcode Update error message as illustrated above, BIOS mod with CPU Microcode Update will not fix the problem.
    SLIC Mod Information

SLIC mod request is not supported as it can bypass windows activation which can be considered/interpreted act of piracy ( forum rules ). If you sometime or occasionally re-format your windows & have problem with windows activation because of the problematic internet connection, you'll need to contact Microsoft for manual/offline activation or contact your notebook manufacturer for restore disk.

    Flash BIOS in DOS mode

How to create DOS bootable disk - post #64.
    1) Make sure battery is full for notebook & power cord is plugged in.
    2) Boot with DOS bootable disk
    3) At command prompt, enter this command:-
    Code:
    phlash16.exe /x /s /mode=3 bios-filename
Note: Change bios-filename with your BIOS filename, e.g. JV50T109.wph.
    4) Wait until it finish & reboot itself or follow the on-screen instruction. DO NOT interrupt the process.

WARNING! Flashing BIOS is very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. There are external factor that we cannot control to ensure such process will 100% success. The only thing we can ensure you is that the modified BIOS image is properly build with zero warning & error. We will not responsible for failed BIOS flash or any other failure. Use it at your own risk.
BIOS Recovery - Collection of CRISIS Packages & Procedures

Good news is, there is a way to recover from failed BIOS flash or corrupted BIOS. To achieve this, we will require a Crisis Recovery Disk. Crisis Recovery Disk is the final fail-safe mechanism to recover the BIOS. The BIOS recovery procedure can be found at the bottom of this post. Keep in mind, the hotkey & procedure to recover corrupted BIOS may varied between different model even it is from the same manufacturer. Believe me, I know. :)

    CRISIS Disk (WINCRIS):-
    Acer Aspire 9420 BIOS v1.24 Recovery.rar
Only need to replace the "BIOS.WPH" file with yours. Make sure the BIOS.WPH file is the one working with your model. Preferably the original BIOS image file. The BIOS.WPH file in the package is for Aspire 9420 (also compatible with: Aspire 7110, Aspire 9410, Aspire 9410Z, TravelMate 5110, TravelMate 5610, TravelMate 5620)

EDIT: If BIOS recovery is unsuccessful, please create CRISIS disk using floppy disk or USB flash drive & with option "Compress The Bin File" selected. During the recovery process, DON'T press any key, just in case.
    Special Notes for CRISIS disk:-

    • It is essential to create CRISIS disk in 32-bit OS, preferably Windows XP.
    • If you use USB flash drive, make sure the size is no more than 2GB.
[*]If your notebook reboot after triggering BIOS recovery mode (by pressing the hotkey), just play along & don't interrupt it at all. It may reboot a couple of time before it successfully recovered the corrupted BIOS.[/LIST]

These Special Notes are based on the reports I read on several forums & websites. There is no official documentation to support it but it is best to follow it to reduce the possible factor that can caused failed BIOS recovery.

This is step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for me & most Acer notebook:-
    1) Download Crisis Disk maker above.
    2) Create Crisis Disk using WINCRIS (need a floppy disk or usb pen drive/usb flash drive).
    3) Remember to replaced the "BIOS.WPH" file with yours. It is important to rename the BIOS file to "BIOS.WPH".
    4) Make sure the battery and the power cord are connected to the laptop. Also laptop need to be in power-off state.
    5) Hold in Fn+Esc and then press the power button (without releasing Fn+Esc key).
    6) The USB floppy drive/pen drive/flash drive light will flash as it reads the BIOS file from the disk. You can release Fn+Esc key.
    7) While in recovery process, display will always blank.
    8) Recovery process will take a while (a minute or two). Laptop will automatically restart when recovery process succeed. You should see POST after restart.

2nd version step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for some Acer notebooks:-
    1) Download Crisis Disk maker above.
    2) Create Crisis Disk using WINCRIS (need a floppy disk or usb pen drive/usb flash drive).
    3) Remember to replaced the "BIOS.WPH" file with yours. It is important to rename the BIOS file to "BIOS.WPH".
    4) Make sure the battery is connected to the laptop. Power cord must be disconnected from the laptop. Also laptop need to be in power-off state.
    5) Hold in Fn+Esc then plugged in (AC) power cord. The Power button flashes orange once.
    6) Then press the power button (without releasing Fn+Esc key).
    7) The USB floppy drive/pen drive/flash drive light will flash as it reads the BIOS file from the disk. You can release Fn+Esc key.
    8) While in recovery process, display will always blank.
    9) Recovery process will take a while (a minute or two). Laptop will automatically restart when recovery process succeed. You should see POST after restart.

This is step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for most Dell notebooks:-
    1) Create the CRISIS disk using USB flash drive
    2) Disconnect any external devices, battery & power cord
    3) Plugged in the CRISIS disk to your Dell notebook
    4) Press "End" key
    5) While holding the "End" key, plugged in the power cord & then release the "End" key (DO NOT PRESS THE POWER BUTTON)
    6) The notebook should automatically powered on
    7) Let it run for 10 minutes, just in case
    8) If the recovery successful, your notebook should automatically restart with working BIOS.

This is step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for Toshiba L500:-
    * Use CRISIS DISK - Phlash16_v1.6.9.5.rar as a base package.
    * Rename your notebook BIOS file (.ROM or .WPH) to BIOS.WPH
    * If you have both files (.ROM & .WPH), use .WPH file
    * Replace the BIOS.WPH inside this package with yours

    1) remove or unplugged any external disk & peripherals
    2) remove battery & unplugged power cord from notebook
    3) this is OPTIONAL & I believe not necessary but it doesn't hurt to try; remove optical drive & hard disk from notebook
    4) Press Fn+B. While holding it & plugged in power cord. Don't release Fn+B yet. If your computer doesn't automatically powered on when plugged in the power cord, press the power button. Don't release Fn+B yet.
    5) After a couple of seconds, release the Fn+B keys.
    6) Let it run at least 10 minutes.
    7) If BIOS recovery is successful, notebook will automatically shutdown itself. When turn it ON again, it should boot normally with working BIOS.

    Lenovo Ideapad u350
The BIOS recovery procedure for Lenovo Ideapad U350 notebook is:-

    * CRISIS package: AS8942G CRISDISK - BIOS 3109.rar or
    * CRISIS package: Phlash16_v1.7.0.18_Dell_Recovery.rar

Replace the BIOS.WPH file with your notebook BIOS file, extracted from Lenovo BIOS update webpage. Rename your BIOS file to BIOS.WPH.
    1) Create the CRISIS disk using USB flash drive
    2) Make sure your notebook is power off
    3) Plug in the CRISIS disk to your Lenovo notebook
    4) Press "Fn"+"R" key
    5) While holding the "Fn"+"R" key, press power button
    6) The notebook should power on and USB stick light showing activity
    7) Stop pressing "Fn"+"R" key, after you see USB stick blinking LED
    8) Your notebook should automatically restart with working BIOS in 2-3 minutes.
VERY IMPORTANT: Do not take off your battery!! It seems that before flashing, it verify AC/DC connection and battery level. If one of them is not ok, then reflash is stopped.

    Special Notes for CRISIS disk:-

    • It is essential to create CRISIS disk in 32-bit OS, preferably Windows XP.
[*]If you use USB flash drive, make sure the size is no more than 2GB.[/LIST]
[*]If your notebook reboot after triggering BIOS recovery mode (by pressing the hotkey), just play along & don't interrupt it at all. It may reboot a couple of time before it successfully recovered the corrupted BIOS.[/LIST]

These Special Notes are based on the reports I read on several forums & websites. There is no official documentation to support it but it is best to follow it to reduce the possible factor that can caused failed BIOS recovery.

    * Rename your notebook BIOS file (.ROM or .WPH) to BIOS.WPH
    * If you have both files (.ROM & .WPH), use .WPH file
    * Replace the BIOS.WPH inside this package with yours

Extra info about modified BIOS image for Acer Aspire 9420 at post #4: BIOS_Aspire9420_VT_R5 & later release
    • This modified BIOS image contain a modified DSDT which is part of ACPI table. You may require to re-install graphic card driver after flashing with this modified BIOS image. The reason is I inject different subvendor-id for graphic card device. It totally cosmetic & will not influence the behavior of graphic card.
    Stay tuned. :)

Is it possible to change CPU voltage in BIOS? I can do it in Windows with the RMClock, but in Linux is a little harder since I only find stuff for AMD.
Yes, after cleaning all up I still have heating problems and changing the voltage is a temporary steep, after I get time to check the thermal paste.

It is possible. Looks like CPU behavior is controlled by DSDT in ACPI tables (in BIOS). However this require in-depth knowledge/study regarding DSDT, particularly CPU Speedstep. Please refer to this website for further information:-
DSDT - Vanilla Speedstep - Generic Scope (_PR)
The information is very useful. Fortunately, linux also support DSDT override. This means you don't need to modify BIOS entirely, just need to modify the DSDT table. You have choices either want to flash to BIOS chip or just override the DSDT using AML file (compiled version of DSDT table) which is much safer.

There is also undervolt tool for linux:-
    c2ctl

Where can I download the BIOS file? I tried ACER UK, US, Malaysia & Germany but I can't find model Z65.

EDIT: Acer Aspire One AOA150 (Model Z65) is using Insyde BIOS, so I can't modify it.

    Hello,

    Laptop : Acer Aspire 7738G

Trying to install Leopard , and also run leopard in a WM (ubuntu) however don't have the VT to enable.

If you can also patch DSDT table that would be great.

Possible to also get step and auto dim, frequency patches ?

I like this laptop however the battery life is very short...Anything will help.

    Many thanks.

    Request Bios Mod if possible:
    - unhide Intel VT-x
    - update Acer SLIC v2.1

if it is realy important, because i am worried about that it can add some bugs, but the best for me is two versions, first without this fixes
    - Advanced menu
    - change descriptions/dialogs and some help information
    - fixing wrong BIOS information
    and second with this fixes

bios available here: Acer 8930G v1.20

    THANKS in advance!

PS can you tell how to change ACER logo

    Hello guys!

Could someone explain me what's exactly modified in the modded aspire 5920 bios, that lloco73 posted on the first page? I'm interested in the parts "patched DTST" and "fixed wrong bios information". I'm willing to flash my lappy, but it would be good to know what i'm confronting with first.

    Thanks :)

    It's to install OSX....

Those are checks done when installing the mac os on the pc's...Means you won't have to patch the kernel and so forth to install Leopard.

However, I don't think your processor support Virtualization. Please check at Intel website.

I will not responsible for failed BIOS flash. Use it at your own risk.

That is the screenshot of the emulated BIOS Setup Menu. If your processor doesn't support VT, the menu will not appear after flashing it to BIOS chip. With the modified BIOS image, if you upgrade the CPU to new CPU with VT, the menu will automatically appear.

    Hello,

could you update the second bios link for the acer aspire 6930G, www.mediafire.com/?ezfazmyzxcj does not work for me.

    [edit] http://www.mediafire.com/?ezfazmyzxcj (? instead of %3F) works.

Does the modded bios give access to the memory settings? Bought the 2x2GB Kingston KHX6400S2ULK2-4G kit (PC2-6400 CL4) to replace the PC2-5300 memory I had in my aspire 6930G. Problem is, the laptop does not boot with the new memory in. It boots when I try one of the old sticks together with a new one, but not with either 1 of the new on its own or the 2 new sticks together...

    Cheers guys!

The only thing in there I could see was a setting to lock the system memory frequency to 667, but no timing options.

Now I understand... and thank you for your quick reply, Darkening! Looking at other posts and the 6930G service manual, the laptop will not run with RAM above 667MHz (see page 21), although the PM45 chipset is quite capable of running an FSB of 800MHz for DDR2. The very same service manual even says so on page 18!

The question now is... can this lock be removed?

    Cheers,
    John

It isn't locked by default. You can lock it to 667 but the rest of the time I think it runs from the SPD on the memory.

EDIT: I believe you should be able to run the DDR2 6400. From another post in this forum:

"If you have a P processor or one that utilizes a 1066MHz FSB (use CPU-Z to confirm) then your notebook chipset supports DDR2-800 (I assume you have DDR2-667 now)."

    Hi Darkening,

My laptop CPU is a T6400 with a 800MHz FSB. CPU-Z says RAM is running 5.5.5.15 at a 3:5 ratio. Upgrading to a x9100 CPU (1066MHz FSB) is a plan, but these are still a bit expensive.

And, I got a reply from Kingston:

Bummer. I can use SPDtool to reduce the memory speed and/or change the CL4 to CL5 and see if the laptop likes it better.

EDIT: Have just modified the SPD info on one of the sticks and it worked! As the Kingson guy said, the CL4 @ 800MHz DDR was too low for this system. Changing it to CL5 seems to have fixed the problem. So yes, Darkening, you were right about the motherboard/bios/chipset supporting 800MHz memory!! Now running @5.4.4.12 instead of 4.4.4.12. Will flash the other stick to run @ 2x2GB and will stress the system to see if it can cope.

Shame these cannot be set in the bios ;-)

    Cheers,
    John

It appear that the new BIOS already VT enabled but the menu originally hidden. I have unlocked the VT menu. Now it depend on your CPU either it is VT capable or not. I'm also unlocked "Enhanced C-states". I know what it do (prolong battery lifetime, save energy, etc) but I don't know how it will behave with your notebook. So, be cautious with it. I'm also believe that not all C-states related menu is unlocked yet (there should be another menu to set maximum C-state to C4 or C6).

EDIT: This is the 2nd version without Enhanced C-States menu:-

Thanks again, but unfortunately my processor does not support VT-x, my mistake. Also I tried both of your BIOS images, but the only change seemed to be the version number, the new options under the 'main' menu where not present. Though it might be because those options are not supported by my hardware. Enhanced Speedstep is supported, but not listed.

Acer TravelMate 2480 (same bios as 3320 and 5750 I believe)

    Requests:
    - Enable hidden features (ability to change from sata mode to ide and other stuff)
    - Change Fan speeds to always high
    - Ability to change from Fixed Video memory and Dynamic (intel 945gm)

I would request a video bios upgrade too, but the one that comes from intel forces me to only 1024x768. So I say no go on the vbios update, unless you could find a laptop with a mobile 945gm + 1280x800 resolution (don't worry too much about this though)

    Thanks in advance!

Yeah, the virtualization menu is not visible because your CPU doesn't support it. You don't have to worry about Speedstep, it is not visible not because your CPU doesn't support it, it because you can't control it manually. If your CPU speed change according to CPU load, that means Speedstep is working/enabled.

Sorry, none of your requests are supported by BIOS. The ability to change the video memory is depend on your hardware. If you can't change the video memory that means you really really can't. BTW, TravelMate 2480 does use the same BIOS version as 5570z (not 5750).

But I have the option in my Bios to change from 64MB, 128MB to MaxDMVT (which I assume is dynamic).

Also my HDD and DVD drive are Sata, but they operate in IDE mode, so I can't change this?

    You said:-
Maybe you want to elaborate more on that. If you want to add an option to increase the video memory more than 128MB, it can't be done since your BIOS doesn't support it.
You have to understand what SATA means. SATA stand for Serial-ATA. It was designed to replace the older ATA (AT Attachment) standard (also known as EIDE).
HDD drive attached to PATA & SATA always works in IDE mode. With more advanced chipset, you can choose between IDE and AHCI (faster) mode. But AHCI mode is not supported by your BIOS.

Hmm, ok I think I understand the Sata thing now. Anyway, heres some more info on what I mean about the video memory.

I can select 64MB, 128MB, or 256MB (aka MaxDMVT). These are all dynamic memory however (takes RAM when needed). I want an option to choose a fixed amount of memory (memory that is always there).

Also another request. If I extracted the DSDT, optimized it with IASL, and recompiled it to DSDT.aml, would you be able to import that as well?

And I'm not 100% sure if this has to do with BIOS, but I have a TI card reader, and it doesn't detect any cards (nor has it ever at any point in time on any other OS). I was thinking maybe the Bios isn't assigning it something? Although its visible as a device.

According to TravelMate 2480 specification, the video is an integrated graphics device which don't have independent video memory. This means it always use system memory (shared). If you want the video memory to be fixed, you can set to either 64MB or 128MB.
The DSDT already optimized. You don't have to recompiled it. Unless you have specific target but still, modifying DSDT still consider a "trial & error" process. Most people modify their DSDT if they are using linux their main OS because with this OS, the bootloader have the capability to do DSDT override, meaning don't need to modify/flash BIOS. Which means more safer & testing the modified DSDT much easier.
I don't think is has to do with BIOS. More to software/driver issue to me.

According to Aspire 5740G specification, it have ATI Radeon with dedicated video RAM. Why do you want to use i5 graphic core which use Intel HD? :) However, I will look into your BIOS image. If such capability supported, I will modify it.

Either it works or not will depend on the motherboard design. This my theory though, if the ATI Radeon is an add-on card (mini-PCI-e card), pulling out the card will make the i5 integrated graphic card activated, just like standard desktop computer. Try that to see if it is possible.

No it's not- GPU is soldered but that's nothing to do with it. The point is that Aspire 5740G has a chipset that allows switching between an integrated and dedicated GPU on the fly. First press releases had this feature mentioned but because Acer released this notebook soon after Core i3/i5/i7 were introduced and Intel had no working driver at that time- they had to disable it. I was also going to ask you to look into the BIOS- I presume they didn’t remove the feature altogether- it just probably ended up hidden.
Anyway- thanks in advance for looking into this.

    Hi again,
I looked into the BIOS, but there is no setting to enable the Core I5-Graphic Core. The reason why I'm asking is to have a longer duration in battery mode...

It would be great if you could look if you can activate a hidden feature in the bios if there is one. Thanks =)
