I'm wrong about the Q9000 Microcode update. The one I found in BIOS:-
    CPUID: 010676h
    Platform ID: 80h = 1000 0000 (8 bits in binary representation) = 7
Which is for Intel Core 2 Duo T8100.

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000:-
    CPUID: 010676h
    Platform ID: 5 = 0010 0000 (8 bits in binary representation) = 20h

So, to add support for Q9000, I need to add Q9000 Microcode update in your BIOS.

When you press enter at "Merom CPU Control Sub-Menu" title, does it open new "page" but empty or it doesn't do anything at all (it stay at "Merom CPU Control Sub-Menu" title)?

This is one of the CPU Microcode update found in Aspire 4820TG's BIOS v1.22.
    CPUID: 0106E5h
Platform ID: 0,1,4 - (please refer Processor Flags description at post #1256)

    I know CPUID= 0106E5h & Platform ID= 4 is i7-720QM. Anyone know which i7 quad-core processor with Platform ID=0 or 1?

    Reading what book?
    This is for a project.
Because the laptop is going to drive a huge clocktower in my city, but if the electricity falls out in the tower and goes back on then the laptop have to startup and run the application or else the tower wont work.I got everything already done cept the automatic boot with the ac adapter power.

Dear Kizwan, i see you are really busy...after your last post i would kindly say "forgive me not" if you can.(the 9810-6829).
I read your last post and am sure is "very complex" and agree, especially since keeping in consideration also "whitelists" (for upgrade purposes since I plan to change a simple WIFI) as learned in another board where you are oftenmentioned as "the reference". They clear whitelists so you can upgrade and "inject strings".

As per your last post to in reply (and I guess Bios "XP 1.21 No Raid" could be the most suitable") I would be happy to "unhide" IDE/SATA option. Looking at strings there should be some "auto mode" where SATA adjusts speed to capabilities of HD. And not working in RAID ICH7 becomes AHCI capable (that can be setup in windows). And both disks would become available at boot in F12 and setup. They would turn the operation mode to (S1) probably as seen on 2920 Bios where the SATA / IDE option is there.

At the moment I have the machine with the 2.14 unmodified Bios and I remarked that in th elisting of IDE 0, 1, 2 I have listed the first HD, a blank (although there is a second HD) and the DVD.
Boot Options and F12 wouldn't show second HD.
I wonder if the reason is I formatted the second HD as extended partition with logical drives in it (mostly FAT32) or the behaviour would change if I create a primary logical drive and extended partition also on second disk.

Short: If you can forgive me not. I guess that comparing the XP 1.21 NO RAID Bios and having a look at Aspire 2920 Bios maybe this Virtual/IDe-SATA(AHCI) could be enabled. Not urgent as mentioned earlier. I plan to call Acer Italy and start yelling a bit...after the fax the general attitude seemed changed a bit but not for the Bioses meant that are quite "ahem"... scr...ed. Regards :)

ATTN Kizwan: apart googling on 9810 raid etc a few links if that might be useful (in the meantime I will revert to BIOS 1.21 XP No RAID):

    ICH7-M AHCI Mod
(that's the board where they "inject strings" and refer to you but I have not engaged into conversation request) since... (see ICH7M)
Re: Enabling AHCI on ICH7 without BIOS support
Intel 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) SATA AHCI Controller driver for linux-2.6.9 | debianHELP
I/O Controller Hub - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With RAID bios (2.14) it turns into ICH7MDH but in reality is emulation of ICH7, not capable of AHCI if in RAID (but capable if not in RAID mode)
I will start to get rid of RAID but then I will be in Full IDE and relying on the ...forgive me not. Apart that mode (and VT if handy) and boot from Lan I won't bother you more than that. As mentioned Bios 1.21 XP No raid and a look at 2920 Aspire might give you hints without making you loose time.
I will check with a new program I found you mught know RW everything.
Sorry to have bothered you (again)

PS Final: I disabled the "Quiet Boot" and with classic POST diagnostic it shows both Hard drives (it reads Calistoga 1.11r MAK) and the raid rom. If you enter BIOS all changes... (Bios 2.14) Now I will revert to 1.21 No Raid since it seems Bios is just a "cosmetic" screen chnaging what really hardware is. Sorry for the mass post to all

    Attn Kizwan:
    Useful Links of Manuals Acer:
    [REMOVED BY MOD]
    and bios cds ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/utilities/bioscd/

Update: I used a bit RW Everything program at RW - Read & Write that is a bit more conceptual more immediate to me to identify switches etc.

I downgraded the Bios to XP 1.21 No Raid and in advanced mode I updated Bios and DMI. And it works much better. The correct IDEs are identified.
If you do not do a quiet boot the underlying is always the same Bios calistoga Q1 2005 (!) . If you enter the Bios now all the disks are listed/identified (underlying is always the same 2005 Calistoga Bios..) although for some unusual reason "IDE1" is identified as Sata Disk 500Gb S1
while the "IDE2" (second slot) is identified as Sata Disk 500Gb S3 (=>S must be the Sata mode). Similarly now there is a choice on boot F12/Setup to use any HD but by default at position 1 a SCSI Device (remainder of the Sata workarounds I guess).

I booted the system without HD to see if status would change for Slot 1 from S1 to S3 to no success.
Getting ready for the worst I decided to locate the battery and unplugged it for a few seconds to clear the CMOS and on first boot a slow redraw of the screen and in the bios screen not even enough space for the name of HD and a "(" cutout at end of screen.

By the service manual I got hints that 9810 is an evolution from 9800 to 9920 (saw no bios) and it has on boars by the schematics a connector 28/29 where one is Parallel and the other is Sata. 9920 lists only SATA.

Short: without the raid addon rom the bios reports more likely the situation of the machine (biosed in 2005 in reality) and it lists better devices (the boot SCSI device offered bothers me since the bios is now pure (virtual) "IDE").
Much as knowing there is also a PATA connector on board which I do not know if connected to DVD (cfr the S1 status of the HD0).
Yet, aware I have bothered you enough, I am quite confident that (much as per the Aspire 2920 where the S1 status recurs) it could be more easily (for an expert like you) enabled the switch IDE/SATA in Bios with above resources (that RW everything is a good program and I could upload a binary snapshot of the system upon your indications) starting from the Bios XP 1.21 No Raid for Aspire 9810. Sorry for the hassle but apart the IDE/SATA switch (then it will be Intel Matrix to handle direct the hardware to possibly Sata 3Gb Ahci as in 2920) and the D2D erase (useless) and switch to enable/disable Lan boot I would be a glad man (less happy Acer customer though) and am sure many owners of such a desktop replacement.
If any other tweaks for caching control/speed/virtualization I would leave them to your time/wish.
Much as you I spent much time to investigate on issues you shouldn't have for a 2000+ USD machine without any effective Acer support. So i must keep setting on the rest and keep catching up with work... Cheers to all :)
PS: About Notebookreview: shouldn't it be useful to classify also which kind of support (not only guarantee) they give along time, seen in arrears? It's valid also for ATI video cards and others...

EDIT: If you do not enable quiet mode and leave the normal boot (no logo etc) apart always the same 1.11 old Bios you get a TPM not present or TPM has errors (an old remainder of tracking processors project) and at the end of the post you get a "Press a key to continue". (instead of going onto boot) Until I didn't clear CMOS, if I left it there without doing nothing, it would wait for a while and (in case HD connected) reboot. After clear CMOS it just do the routine and stops at "press a key to continue". (where it should go on). If you press it goes on. So you are forced to see the big cover it all logo thinking you have a valid bios hiding the post - it would be nice if only memory check would be skipped but you could see the post - and it is not just cosmetic: It hides the real version of the BIOS (1.11 2005 MAK Phoenix) and all the mistakes/unusual reports that otherwise you would see. So the bios is 6 year old while the machine is three (four now)...
They want you stupid at buy and an engineer at use. Now I understand why the lowered the price suddenly at 1999 at SFO PCMall... Forgive my blahblah and considerations

I look into Aspire 5536 & I found out it have AMD M780G chipset. AMD OverDrive doesn't support mobile version of 780G chipset ( AMD M780G). The only solution to overclock it is by using SetFSB. Clock Generator/PLL Chip in Aspire 5536 are either:-
    - ICS9LPRS480BKLFT (71.09480.A03)
    - RTM880N-796-VB-GRT (71.0080.A03)
Looks like "ICS9LPRS480BKLF" is listed at SetFSB website.

If there are hidden potential, I believe we can find it in these datasheets/guides:-
    - AMD 780G Family Register Programming Requirements
    - AMD 780G Family Register Reference Guide
    - AMD 780G Family BIOS Developer’s Guide

Try read those documents & let me know if you found anything interesting.

@Kizwan: Yes, I tried the Q9000 and still won't boot.... Any take on injecting the micrcode update needed?!? I have an auction running on ebay selling the bloody CPU again... Just 1 day and 21h to go... but if we can solve the issue before it ends I'd be more than happy to use it myself...

1 day 21h is too short I think. I'm pretty much busy with a lot of work. I'll try my best.

    @hippotek,

I have updated CPU Microcode update for CPU with CPUID 010676h. I checked Gateway P-7805u FX, Alienware M17 & MSI GT725 support Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000. All of them have identical CPU Microcode update for CPU with CPUID 010676h. So, I just replaced CPU Microcode update for CPU with CPUID 010676h in your Sony Vaio VGN-AR760U's BIOS with one of them. Please go to post #1279 to get the new modified BIOS image. Good luck. :)

Too bad. So, this proved that the problem is not related to BIOS. Even if the CPU Microcode update is out-dated or not exist at all, BIOS should POST with warning message but should be able to boot into windows. I forgot to ask you, may I know what chipset does it have?

kizwan XD thanks the update to the 6920g, of the modded bios 1.16 work great under Dos, so its ok XD
Now i want to ask you, what can i change on the bios ? my cpu is T5750..
What can i do ? now .. to take more performance from the CPU, and make the fan more fast LOL
And other opcions, you are the big man, so you could help me out on this ? maybe take extra performance from the grafic LOL

But the fan speed could help me ...

I can't advice optimum setting since I don't have this notebook. EIST is unlocked with this modified BIOS, so you can enable dual-IDA using ThrottleStop. lizzarddos already done this.
If you don't understand some of the options, search for it at Wiki website. You still need to use software like MSI AfterBunner or RivaTuner to get extra performance from the graphic card.
Look in the CPU Control Sub-Menu \ Penryn CPU Control Sub-Menu \ CPU Thermal Control Sub-Menu. It should be in there.

I don't see Q9000 is listed as compatible with PM965. Checked in Device Manager to see whether you have ICH8EM or ICH8M I/O controller hub.

About the "Merom CPU Control Sub-Menu", I think I know why you can't see any options in it since the CPU, T8100 is Penryn CPU. I'll need to move all of the options to outside (put under "CPU Control Sub-Menu" directly) for all of it to be visible.

The only way to get more from the processor is by using SetFSB. You'll need to find out what clock generator it have first. I'm afraid the unlocked option in "CPU Control Sub-Menu" is just for processor power & thermal management. You won't be able to increase the processor performance just with the unlocked options.

I think you're right about that, ring69. Pretty sure only the 800 MHz FSB Core 2s have IDA. Look for a T7700, T7800, T8300 or T9300.

So ? its is possible t disable the thottling ? or the throttle xD isn´t the same thing ? LOL

also about the high-fan trip point ... should i reduse the value ? so i could have the fun on 100 % ?

What about the others value ? active trip point and the passive cooling trip point.

All of this was o the sub cpu controll

Now there is other, the ACPI controll sub-menu, other opicion ? why lol

    Hi Kizwan!

    Check here:

    http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/specupdt/320121.pdf

The CPU microcode update you performed is for the Dual Cores!

    QuadCore would be 00001067Ah

I could still not get any reliable info if PM965 supports QuadCores at all or not... FSB800 vs FSB1066 might be a problem, too...

Anyway, thanks for your efforts... I will sell the QuadCore for now

You don't want to set " Passive Cooling Trip Point" lower than default value (95C). If you lowered it to, for example 79C, CPU will start throttling when it reached 79C - please refer to " Item Specific Help" on the right.
" Active Trip Point" - the point in which the OS will turn the CPU Fan on (as stated in " Item Specific Help" on the right); set this to 40C - I figured Fan should already on when temp reached this value. 55C seems too high.

" High-Fan Trip Point" - the point in which the OS will turn the CPU Fan on high (as stated in " Item Specific Help" on the right); the default value (71C) already looks OK. You can lowered this down to, for example 60C. Fan will spin in max speed when CPU temp reaching 60C.
No need to change anything in this section.

CPUID for Q9100 (Spec Code: SLB5G) is 01067Ah while CPUID for Q9000 (Spec Code: SLGEJ) is 010676h.
I already gave you the link to the list of PM965's compatible processor in my previous post:-
The Gateway P-7805u FX, Alienware M17 & MSI GT725 which all of 'em support Intel Core 2 Quad processor have PM45/GM45 chipset.

Anyway, thank you for testing the CPU Microcode Update BIOS MOD. :) Look like only computer halt during boot (after upgraded the CPU) but able to resume booting into windows can take the benefit from modded BIOS with CPU Microcode Update.

    Yeah, I forgot ring69's 6920G have T5750. :) lizzarddos's 6920G have T9500.

I'll look into it. For the meantime, make sure your notebook can recover corrupted BIOS with CRISIS disk.

Regarding the CPU upgrade, I believe you won't faced any problem if you decided to upgrade to T7400 or T7600.

Please make sure your notebook can recover corrupted BIOS with CRISIS disk before flashing BIOS with this modified BIOS image. I will not responsible for any problem. Good luck. :)

    Hi hippotek,

There is new modified BIOS image for Sony Vaio VGN-AR760U. Look at " UPDATE (16 January 2011)" - post #1279.
    - " Moved" options under " Merom CPU Control Sub-Menu" to directly under " CPU Control Sub-Menu". When you enter " CPU Control Sub-Menu", you should see the options (VT, etc).
    - Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) is unlocked - for enabling dual-IDA using ThrottleStop.

    KIZWAN
Thank you for the mod this works very good, very good indeed.

uhh, man, i see a tab that says *AMD* in your screenshot, but in the updated bios of mine doesn't have it. just wondering.

Also is there something called the *advanced clock calibration*?? because i have an AMD Phenom II processor, and just read some articles saying it can unlock cores. I will be really glad if you help me unhide this *advanced clock calibration*, and is likely to ask some more form your genius mind. just feeling lucky maybe i can have tri-core cpu.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! for the previous bios mod it had tons of features that i frankly didn't understand.

Please consider second second version of the BIOS MOD

AMD section is there all the time but hidden. I just moved all options from AMD section to Main section in the modified BIOS you use right now.
I just checked a couple of minutes ago, unfortunately there is no *advanced clock calibration* or ACC or similar with it in D640's BIOS.

Look in the first post. Just specify BIOS file name in the parameter.
Yes, you can flash BIOS using CRISIS disk too.

    Aspire 5050 specification
This is suitable place to discuss CPU upgrade:-
Hello!!! Acer aspire 5050-3785 upgrade question
    OR start new thread.
You can't overclock with BIOS alone. Notebook's BIOS is not build for overclocking unless it is high-performance notebook, for example Alienware, Toshiba Qosmio series notebook, etc. Even high-performance notebook also need to use third party software like ThrottleStop, SetFSB, etc to overclock.

Attn Kizwan: sorry to bother you... any hope in solving the situation for my buggy BIOS? Acer EMEA has been made aware of this evident (widespread) issue and "they might solve".

To recap the machine is a ACER branded but INVENTEC built and shares schematics for 9800/9810 and 9920/9915. (components

My problems (to recap short) is that if you boot in "no quiet mode" you get a correct old 2005Q1 Calistoga template bios that enumerates correctly (except throwing a TPM error) but at end of post is stops asking to "press any key" to go on and boot.

9810 Bios XP 1.21 NO Raid seems the the most correct and, since above, I checked Bios Aspire 9920 1.13 (they have up to 1.20) in PBE and it offers i in "MAIN" the choice of IDE/SATA/AHCI (triple choice).

Thats the bare minimum functional I would appreciate it could be achieved:
To be able to boot in no quiet mode and -maybe without ram counting as on other no quiet posts,2920 is an example, after post it goes on without stops (as in any laptop) and the IDE/SATA AHCI option enabled.
Appreciated would be to check if Intel 4965AGN would be whitelisted since I plan to upgrade instead of pluggin in a unnecessary stick.
VT, SLIC (I plan dual boot XP Pro and MCE2005) and others would be left to you, as much as possible suboption for "RAID mode" (but no rom for it). A Tad stuck as you can imagine because of this unusual situation. If you install sooner or later it will crash.

Funny is I happened to see a Win7 upgrade kit (given complimentary to many) and Win7 is there also for 9810 with bios "at least 2.04" which is not seen anywhere... I got a culture on this evidently put on commerce not tested enough machine that saw several issues, from 4GB Ram support to many.

Sorry for the further post but I do not know status and I rely on your expertise although the seller should solve. Thx for your co op
