Well, I have heard people having success with undervolting on the desktop i7s. They do it through the MB's BIOS though, not through software.

Probably I need to rephrase my statement:-
When I replied earlier I was referring to mobile computer since I always thought this forum is about notebook computer, not desktop computer.

I know, haha. Just that I was hoping Acer might have hidden some settings in the BIOS that allows this. I know some other manufacturers do this. Just hoping on my part, though :p

    Hey kizwan,

Do you know if it is possible to enable 4GB of ram support for the Acer 5672?

I currently have the latest bios 3239 along with a 64bit CPU and 4 GB ram installed, but the bios is limiting it to only 3 GB of usable ram (and I cannot edit this).

Any ideas on how to enable it?

    Thanks!

Thank you sir may I have another. kizwan at the time I made the bios mod request I didn't realize that I needed a raid enable to get the drivers to install. Can I please have the AHCI, Raid, and Memory Timings enabled. Because my hard drive Momentus XT is only running at half its capability and also the chipset and memory are capable of tighter timings.

There is a no TPM error in the boot screen, is this something I should be concerned about? I think this is great what you're doing, allowing us to reclaim our laptops from the OEMs. Thank you for your time!

"Memory Timings" option is not available. RAID functionality depend on the hardware implementation/design. Even though chipset support such feature, it availability depend on the notebook manufacturer whether they implemented it or not.

    Hi,
i've got an Acer Travelmate 8572G and the fan settings seem too low - the fans seem to turn at 80% of speed when at about 100°C - this creates overheat after about 30 minutes of different games - could you enable any settings for fanspeed / settings?

    Here's the BIOS
    http://global-download.acer.com/GDF...avelMate 8572G&OS=722&LC=de&BC=Acer&SC=EMEA_8

It would be nice if theres anything possible to make the fans run a bit faster / earlier.
    thanks so far :)

Sorry, FAN mod request is not supported here. You have two choices:-
    • Use this method. You'll need to study about it a little bit.
    • There's already a modified BIOS image for Travelmate 8572 series notebook. It's based on BIOS v1.20. You can find it at post #1290. In the unlocked options, there are options for FAN control. If you want, test this BIOS first. Use at your own risk!

Regarding choice (b), the FAN settings in the BIOS menu follow ACPI standard specification. Unfortunately, the FAN on notebook usually is not controlled using ACPI standard specification. So, the best solution is choice (a).

kizwan as always your flashes are impeccable, you're such an asset to this community!
    Thank you.

Yes you are correct there is no raid controller on this Quanta 30D1 Ver.8526 mainboard (HP Pavilion dv9823cl Entertainment Notebook PC).

But in the boot options, is there a boot to SATA, RAID, AHCI or SCSI device option? Because the hard disk shows up in the BIOS under SATA 0 but when it boots up it shows no operating system.

kizwan, will you please give me one more chance to improve preformance and find the boot options SATA, RAID, AHCI or SCSI device. And in the boot order please. Thanks Again!

The default settings is IDE. So when you change the settings to AHCI, you'll need to reinstall windows at least. If you want set SATA to AHCI mode, make sure SATA0 Mode set to AHCI & SATA AHCI mode set to Enabled. Then reinstall windows.

Regarding on how to improve the performance, you'll need to use 3rd party tools for that, like SetFSB. OR upgrade the processor.

There is absolutely no need to modify the BIOS for that.

    On Windows:
You can either disable/uninstall the Acer Launch Manager or find the Launch Manager settings for bluetooth. See this post.
On my laptop (3820TG), all I need to do is open the registry and find (once again, note that settings path for you might be different):
    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Dritek\LManager\Settings\Bluetooth]
    "Bluetooth Always On"="0"
    And change 0 to 1.

    On Linux (possibly Mac OS?):
Use acer_ec.pl script to write to the BTEN location in Embedded Controller (see this)
Assuming BTEN variable is stored at offset [0x71] bit 1, then i can do "sudo perl acer_ec.pl +f 0x71 0x02" ([value stored at 0x71] OR 0x02). Can put that in /etc/rc.local for bluetooth to turn on at start up.

If you still want it changed, post your BIOS (didn't you create your own modded BIOS?) and I'll do it for you.

    yess..
in linux: tested 20 minutes ago.. := 0x71 3 enables bt.. ok but is unnecessary 'cos ubuntu starts it at every boot..
in windows: I hate fake sw.. so never used launch manager.. and I suppose that launch manager has a sort of Stay Resident that check reg key.. and enable.. but is a tardive enable of bt.. I prefer to apply the
Kizwan's HOWTO: Acer Aspire 9420 Resources for Windows & Mac OS X (Leopard & Snow Leopard)
that has fadt mod and bt enabled before the boot

on mac the perl script doesn't run.. oh.. it would make me happy.. I use 70% mac.. 30% win on my lappie!

so I'm studying the bios mods.. rev eng.. so hard work for me!

    thanks

ok i'm sorry. kizwan. I'm asking the same (bt bios mod)
and no argue or talking about mac ok?

( if in the other forum since 2009 there's a declaration and allow of apple that allow to talk inside it.. but I don't know if here we can do the same.. or there's the same policy.. i'm absolutely sure of that)

but.. rules are rules.. and my needs are apart of which OS I want to use on the lappie.. am I right?

ps in your blog yesterday I wrote.. if you like.. moving ..
now I'm going to work.. bye

    Hi!
I'd like to request a BIOS mod if possible: I have an Acer Travelmate 5530G that originally came with a Turion RM-70, ATI HD3470/HD3200 etc.
I've been upgrading my laptop since then: first the RAM, HDD, VGA (ATI HD3650) and now I'd be interested in successfully upgrading my RM-70 to a ZM-87 that I managed to buy recently.
The problem is, that although the computer does accept the new CPU, its passive thermal trip points are very low.
It usually warms up to 74-75 degrees in Intel Burn Test, then it starts to intermittently throttle down to 600 Mhz. This causes a sinus-like fluctuation in framerates when playing with a relatively modern game (STALKER fluctuates between 12 and 34 frames per second). I'm sure that the CPU isn't defective, as I saw the same test run with it in an HP Pavilion DV5 (one of the worst cooling designs I've seen, its vents are pointed downwards :D) and it reached 90 degrees Celsius without a hitch.
This is actually a replacement for a ZM-86 that I got from the seller, but I sent it back for the exact same reason (both of us thought that CPU was defective, it being a Demo piece and all). Now I'm pretty sure it's the BIOS that would need some tweaking before I can fully use a stronger processor.
I've even made a video of the ZM-86 as it down-throttles and uploaded it to my FTP storage at my university's server: http://people.inf.elte.hu/blasku/cpu.avi . This is how I could 'prove' that the processor was defective, and I should be given a refund  .
I have the newest version BIOS (1.26), I'll upload the full BIOS image if needed. It's quite simple with phlash16.exe that I've got on my Caldera DOS pendrive, isn't it?
Do you guys think I'm even on the right track here (thermal trip point settings are the last idea I've got)? Thanks! :)

P.S.: I'm surely not having problems with my cooling: I've switched all my thermal pads with copper plates, I use Arctic Cooling MX-2 on every surface. The result is that my RM-70 doesn't really go above 60 °C, and it stays around 47-48 degrees during everyday use (my GPU is even cooler by a few degees)

Yeah, it sounds like you are on the right track. There are quite a few threads about throttling, so you should have a look on this forum. You might be able to find an answer that works for you in one of the threads.

Also, I remember reading somewhere that you can use ThrottleStop program to stop CPU throttling. I have never used it myself, but you can probably find a guide somewhere on the web on how to do it.

As for BIOS modification, there could be a hidden page with adjustable thermal tripping points.

    Cheers!

This involved modifying ACPI table. Sorry, this request is not supported here.

BTW, not all notebooks use standard method to declare/set passive trip point temperature. I'm suggesting you to open new thread for this specific problem. Invite me & we'll do some tests.

OK, I have modded the BIOS to have bluetooth always enabled. The original BIOS I took from post #780.

Acer Aspire 5930 BIOS mod: download
    - changed BTES from 0 to 1 in DSDT table. It is slightly different from kizwan's method described here, but it should still work.

Here is DSDT table separately: DSDT.aml.zip

Let me know if it works.

Please make sure your notebook can recover corrupted BIOS with CRISIS disk before flashing BIOS with this modified BIOS image. I will not responsible for any problem

This notebook does use Phoenix BIOS but it is UEFI based BIOS. The BIOS recovery might be different. Try put the .ROM file in the USB flash drive (formatted to FAT16 or FAT32) & retry the BIOS recovery. The Fn+Esc key might be still the hot-key to enable the BIOS recovery mode.

The 3GB issue is known problem on older chipset. ICH7M chipset is effected with this problem. If not all, some or most of ICH7M notebooks affected with it. This appeared to caused by TOLUD register. It's a 8-bit register defines the Top of Usable Dram. Graphic memory also defined under TOLUD register. Sorry, I can't explain it in detail on this issue because I only know a little bit about it. There is a workaround though. It's not easy & I don't know how to do it yet. You won't be able to claim all 4GB. At best you'll be able to claim more than 3GB (3.5GB or 3.75GB). Please read here for more information.
