That'll probably work (as much as a not supported card can) since it is the same form factor. The GTS 250m isn't a bad card but it only has a 128-bit bus compared to the 256-bit bus on the GTS 160m. The GTS 160m will work better at larger resolutions like 1920x1080 but the GTS 250m should be much better than the GTS 160m at something like 1366x768 due to it having more shaders and having a 40nm die makes it run cooler than the 55 nm die that the GTS 160m has.

Also I'm noticing that the info given on MXM Upgrade doesn't coincide with Notebookcheck on the GTS 250m. Someone might have to clarify that info since anything I said gets thrown out the window if their info is right.

Cause Acer hates us for causing lower sales of laptops.

yeah according to notebookcheck the 160 is fair bit better than the 250 but is a hot card by the looks of it. does any one know what slot the radeon 4850 is as i have one in my advent 6555 and it might be worth while transfering it over as the screen is far superior on my acer.

Hmm I was on ebay the other day looking for a ATI card as my 8600m gt stopped working ¬¬ I got a few sellers saying that the 3650 will work in my laptop which is a aspire 7720g is that right?

I've got a 9920g which also had a dead 8600 gt. I bought an ATI HD 3650 but it only works on an external monitor. Haven't found a fix yet. but at least the laptop is usable as a desktop now.

    Hi all
    My first post...
I have Acer Aspire 5520G with 8600m GS which died few days ago...
I have read all these 66 pages before I decided to ask for more information...
Trying to find an adequate replacement for my dead card I went to ebay and found nvidia 9650m GT 1GB ddr2 with asus bios most affordable...
When I read all those post, as I could conclude, the only problem from g96 lineup is with 9600m GT right?
What I want to say is that 9650m will be compatible with my lappy right?
To remind you its board is based on nvidia nforce 560 (MCP67) chipset...
    Looking forward...

Hi Arminator, and welcome to the forums!

First off, the 9600M GT only presents itself on the 5920G. No one's tried it on the 5520G, as the first post in the topic shows, but people have had success with similar models such as the 5720G, 6920G, and 7720G. Only one way to find out for sure, and that's try it yourself.

Same goes for the GeForce 9650M GT; I've no idea where on earth all of these things are coming from, but it's worth a shot.

He shaneee, I'm not going to send my laptop to mxm-upgrade.

I made a crazy offer on a HD 4650 on ebay and I won the bidding :p ... so for half the price mxm is offering them I got myself a nice card. :D

I will settle with this. But since you are so eager to know whether or not a 260m will run in a 8920 why not send your laptop to mxm? You also live in the Netherlands so it shouldn't be a problem. Plus you would finally know if there is a worthy upgrade for the 9700m gt.

Sorry to burst your bubble like this. ;)

Yeah, the keep popping up like shrooms on ebay. Cheap too!

First screenshot is when you overclocked GPU?
What were the clocks and load/idle temp when you made this score?
I am happy for this positive feedback since I am waiting for the same card for may lappy... :)

Decent scores - the 9650M GT still pantses my 9500M GS by a wide margin, even when not equipped with GDDR3 video memory.

hehe, I would of got a 9600 but couldn't find any in the uk on ebay so this was the next best thing and it runs a lot cooler compared to my old one.

O and the test were on with stock clocks. Haven't tried overclocking it yet has it works quite well so far. I'll oc it later and post another screen to show the difference.

Hi !I can confirm that Acer 5920g is compatible
with geforce 9650 gt ( DDR 2 ) from asus.

There is no problem with instalation and drivers, but the temps are too high.
The core idle 71 C, and under loud 100 C- too much!
the system is stable, but we must know what makes such high temp.
There must be a problem with cooling system. Perhaps such like with ati
    4650 ?

    sorry for poor english

    9650 is from ebay

Hi rafali17 sounds a little like you need to clean out your fans and heatsinks on your laptop, also try changing the paste on the gpu. mine idles around 45-55 and under load is about 80...

the problem is, that the srews from acer 5920g mounting original metal backplate from asus are too short, after changing them idle temp is 49 - 52 and 80-90 under lound :)

@parkerm35: Depends on the model of notebook, what memory type your Radeon HD 4570 has, and what the GeForce GT 130M has.
@rafali17: Upload it to a place like Imageshack or Photobucket, then use the forum codes they provide you.

Use the original gpu mounting that came with your laptop, it will look small but it will fit better even if the 9650 card has bigger holds. If that's what your problem is.

hexxor93 you have right, but this is not so simple, original 5920g and nvidia 8600gt have no metal backplate, screws are going direct through mxm card ( the holes for screws in mxm 8600gt are smaller than in asus 9650 ).

here we go with 3dmark 2006, stock cloks:

Ahhh I get where your coming from now. I'm guessing that you removed the backplate if any came with your 9650. I think you might need to look for some bigger screws in that case, can't think of any other fix for that.

    Yes that is it!

    I have overclock my 9650gt ( gpu 625, memory 500, shaders 1525)
and 3dmark 2006 is 5506 points. Thats all for now, i have enough!

    Thank yoy hexxor93

for all owners of acer 5920g you can go for nvidia 9650gt dd2, it is much better than 8600gt dd2, ( overclock 8600 gt ddr2 give 3800 points in 3dmark 2006 ), but i think not so good like 9600 gt dd3 ( but as for now 9600gt is no compatible with 5920g but who know? ).

Good luck for everyone and bye!

    I have successfully installed 9650m gt 1gb ddr2 on aspire 5520g...
I had two tricky things to solve...
First was with mounting... Original screwers were short. So I took two from processor plate which are a bit bigger and they fit well...
So now I have two screwers on processors plate and two on graphics... And I had no problems with high temps which means it is ok...
Use 257.15 driver version... It works like a charm - No powermizer troubles...

I will try games and try to give some feedback... ;)

    9650M GT WORKS ON 5520 G...

Ah ok you need to go into device manager and select the driver manually. Heres a link to the drivers I'm using at the moment. Forceware 195.62 - LaptopVideo2Go Forums

Try install these, if they don't install try installing the driver via device manager.

I am just trying on my Aspire 5520g...
    Will inform about performance...
I am going to overclock CPU by 200 MHz (to 2,2 GHz)...

I played Crysis on medium DX10 average 28-30 FPS @1280x800... And it was playable...

    Update:

I had to put all four screwers on CPU and GPU cooling plate because I had a bit higher temps when playing games. GPU ran up to 90°C and CPU was about 70°C. Now it is ok. GPU is around 70° and CPU around 65°C average...

    @ hexxor93
I installed drivers from link you posted, but I had to disable Powermizer option during setup to solve flickering issue.
    Now works very fine...
    Thanx

    @ Student@Antwerp2009
I tried it on 5520G and had average 27-30 FPS at medium setting (2/3) with no multisampling and Vsync off res. 1280x800 (with no CPU overclock)
