Hi all!
I have a 7520g with 8600m gs 512mb ddr2.
What cards can i install besides 8400M G, 8600M GT,HD 3650?
Can i install cards with 1 gb of memory?

Probably 9500MGS, 9600M GS, 9600M GT or 9650M GT from Nvidia and 4650/4670 MXM II from ATI...
Regarding memory amount I dont think that should be a problem... -

and it costs 60euros, now i make some offers.. -
I paid mine 120$... -
i'll have no problems during montage and installation -
Mine was 80 euro incl. shipping from hong kong! SO we are in the same price ;-)

My 4670 is coming hopefully tuesday/wednesday.
-
BTW Meaker, you still have your 5520G laptop? Because your sig says something else! -

Mine and yours are the same stepping, came from the same batch.
It was the highest end chip (TL-68) that did not exist at that time. -
Just letting everyone know about an update to the top post: I've got confirmation that the Aspire 5940G is MXM-A equipped, while the Aspire 5745G, 5943G, and 8943G are all not equipped with MXM.
-

Any chance of seeing the 5940g confirmation?
-
It's in the service guide: the disassembly pics denote an MXM-A slot, and the FRU list shows only one 5940G mainboard, with an MXM-A slot clearly visible.

I swear to God, Meaker, I envy you so much right now.

New heatsink = much love.
I might get my X9100 to 3.46ghz -
Have any pics or a build thread?
BTW just got a 9600m GT working in an Acer 5720 with Win 7 64 (original 8400m GS). Used LV2GO .inf. Driver 258.96
Runs cooler too...around 50C while 8600m GT was 60+. -
Awesome work, alligatorman! Any chance you've got some pics and screenshots to post?

As for the rest it's mostly been done such as the second HDD in the optical slot.
Looks like the 4670 is happy running at 775/1004, 800 core or 1025 mem cause artifacts or lockup. My old 4650 (DDR2) in my 6935g would go to 750mhz core at 1.2v (600mhz ram). However the heatsink cried and the 4650 being a lower binned part was more hungry too.
The 65% increase in bandwidth and almost 30% core speed increase has helped a lot (I ran the 4650 at 600mhz core 1.0v for heat reasons). -

Firstly, forgot to mention, congrats alligatorman, can be tricky getting those 9600Ms working in slightly older machines.
So the CPU will go a little higher, 3.33ghz, too much more voltage and things start getting hot again.
Here is a bench with the 3.33ghz CPU and HD4650 @ 775/1004
ORB - Compare
Yay over 8000.
Also a heads up, the switchable graphics driver for the 8935G is needed, the 5935g driver only supports the 4650. -

ORB - Compare
8200
After taking a closer look at test 3 in 3dmark 06 (very good to test it) I backed off to 760mhz core and went up to 1025mhz mem.
Backing off the core increased my score, it also seemed to give my mem some more headroom which increased my score again. -
Cool scores, Meaker and congrats for the new GPU
The question is how this transfers into heat
I know that Acer suited 5930G with far better cooling than 5920G and I wonder how cool is yours?

In a properly balanced game that hits the CPU and GPU we are talking 90C for the CPU and GPU.
High 80s in a one sided game for the stressed componant. In a GPU heavy game the CPU goes to around 65C lol
The biggest difference is the temperatures on the lap, I can actually keep it there, where it was uncomfortable before.
Remember I got the better heatsink. My 5935G came with a 4570, I got the heatsink recommended for the 4670 in the FRU.
There is also one for the GT240M. -
And that's with an Xtreme in there, gee. I have the same temps with BSEL moded and undervolted T9500. How much different are the heatsinks? A pic would be nice
-

The heatsinks are not terribly different. The fan has less blades and is also rated for lower current but is generally a bit more agressive but has a lower tone to it so is less annoying.
The heatpipes are a fraction thicker and the copper contact for the GPU is wider without 4 square outlines.
It came pre-applied with a thin layer of paste for the CPU and a pad for the GPU. The pad is interesting, its very thin and it makes good contact with the core so maybe paste is not quite thick enough?
Anyway a pick of the unit is up at the shop:
CPU cooler / fan for Acer Aspire 5935G-744G50MN
(I think that might actually be MY unit lol, its gone up a fair whack in price).
The design is not radically different, but the temps are a decent bit better.
EDIT: CPU is at 1.2375V which is its stock and 3.33ghz is the fastest it can do at this voltage. Running the OCCT stress test my temps stabilise at 78C. -
I have a question,
Recently I replaced my 8600m gs with a 9650m gt. On the internet I see the information that it has 800mhz memory clock. but mine shows 432mhz in gpu-z. And that's when I ran a furmark benchmark. So its at full usage.
Any idea's how that can be solved? or do I need to do the 432 times 2 because of DDR2? -
No, that's because 800 MHz is the memory speed for the GDDR3 version of the 9650M GT. Since yours is DDR2, its speed is roughly half that.
That's one of the main benefits of GDDR3-equipped MXM cards over their DDR2 brothers, double the memory bandwidth. It also adds a bundle to the cost of the card, which is why Acer preferred not to use it all the time. -
Hi!
I installed Nvidia 9650m GT on Acer Aspire 7520 and it works perfectly.
You can add this card to the first page of the thread. -
Awesome, roccospatu! Could you please post some screenshots and/or pictures for verification? Thumbnailed, please.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You have not added the 4670 to the 5935g.
-
i see red dots on black colors.
Now i plugged an external monitor and all is normal, i tried to install my old card and there aren't red dots.
I don't know how to solve this problem.
-
@roccospatu
Which driver version do you use with 9650M GT? -
I have these artifacts also on the boot screen. So i think that there are some problems of compatibility with the bios. I dunno -
This is my gpuz screen:

Thanks for the screenshot, but I'm going to refrain from listing it until we can get that whole corrupted-graphics issue sorted out.
-
Ok thanks.

Hi, I'm new on this forum. I need to change a broken 8600m on an Acer 5920G. I've a 8400m MXM card, but seems not to work. Do you know if it's compatible with 5920G?
Thanks a lot!

Everything you asked for is listed in the first post of this thread- including links to success stories.
-
So all the new Acer Aspire models do not use MXM anymore?
Specifically interested in the Phenom II X920 based 7552G model with Mob. HD5830+. -

Thanks. -
New member.
Aspire 7520G ICY70 graphics card 8400m g.
The laptop started having graphics corruption problems and, after cleaning the dust from the exhaust fins, it worked normally for a couple of weeks.
The corruption has now returned and I suspect the graphics card is failing.
Corruption is even apparent on the bios screen.
Removing/reseating did not solve the problem.
The laptop is owned by my father in law(70+), used for surfing, picture storage and letter writing, so cutting edge graphics is not required.
The cheapest solution seems to be to replace the card with an ati 3650 sourced from the far east.
Reading through this thread it seems that it may be neccessary to use copper shims but (it's a long thread) I may be confused.
Perhaps someone can clarify the situation and suggest any problems I may encounter. -
When you get the card put the cooling plate on the core and check if it lays evenly on the gpu core (with no free space between core and the plate)... If no space free then no copper shim is required... And if there is a free space then shim is needed to fill the gap...
Anyway, according to my experience, I think it differs from each case... For example, the guy that has same laptop as I do added the same card as I did and he didn`t need to do any mod on the cooling plate but I had to mod the plate to get best and safest cooling...
Cheers -

IIRC its more to do with moving between the 9600/3650 to 4650 and GT240m and the like cards.
Usually the 3650 is a straight swap. -
Have ordered an hd 3650 from Hong Kong - will post back when I have further news - may be a while, delivery is up to 3 weeks.
I have another problem but I will start a new thread for it. -
hi guys, i m new here~ pls guide me ^^
my laptop is 4710G, currently is using the default GC ATi Mobility Radeon HD2300, can i know what is the highest GC that i can upgrade to my laptop? -
Hello Zodius, and welcome to the forums!
Only one case of an upgraded 4710G has been identified to date, and that was to a GeForce 8600M GT.
There are newer and better options on the market now, but that'd be a safe choice because someone's tried it before.
If you're feeling adventurous, look for an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4650/4670; they are among the best on the MXM-II form factor. -

Any acer users feeling particularly ambitious? or short on cash?
Here is an MXM II card from an HP 8530w. "HP 502338-001 8530P 8530W VIDEO CARD 512MB " - eBay (item 170552670873 end time Nov-13-10 07:57:35 PST)
Its a quadro fx 770m which is identical to the 9600m gt.
It would probably require a vbios flash to the acer 9600m.
I'm 99% sure it will work! -
Why bother with the Quadro FX 770M when there are plenty of 9600M GTs on eBay?
