Update: Just for the sake of trying hopelessly to fix this 'in game freez' problem I formated my pc again (like the 5th or 6th time in a week time).

The only thing that changed is that when my game freezes, the pc now shuts down by itself again, instead of me having to force a shutdown.
Also, the temp of shutdown dropped again, to 62 celcius (first it was 78, then 68, etc).

So is it safe to assume this is just because of a faulty gpu? (It first only shutdown at full hd, then when we tried to clock it normaly it would shutdown at lower resolutions, then when we clocked it back to the low settings it kept shutting down at the lower resolutions).

Well, the best way to find out would be to toss the 8600M GT back in and see if the problem persists.
If it doesn't, faulty GPU. If it does, one of your other components is going south.

My 8600m gt works perfectly. Guess I got an faulty card from mxm-upgrade then.
Ice-Tea offered for me to bring my laptop to him so he could check it out for himself. I'll update when thats done.

Does anyone know how good Acer is on turn-around time? They sent me a go ahead to send it in to them after I told them that my laptop has been modified from stock. Here is the message they sent me when I asked for the new fan.

I had asked Acer earlier for repair, but I wanted to make sure what people thought about the warranty and my replacing parts.

Depends on your country - Acer Canada's in the same province as me, so it was a relatively quick turn-around.
Also, you might have to put the original components back in your machine for them to service it; that's what I was told, and why I kept my original T5550 CPU.

The place they told me to send it was only one state away from me. I was smart like you. I kept my T6600 and 130m. You always have to count on something going wrong sadly.

    Hi all!

Is the Acer 5732Zg notebook compatible with mxm vga card?
It has intel pm45 chipset, and the original vga is hd4570 512mb ddr vram!

    Thanks.

The HD4570 is embedded to the motherboard as far as I know, that will mean that you can't upgrade / swap your gpu

@zsocz929: First I've heard of the 5732ZG. Given that Acer has recently stopped using MXM cards in their notebook designs, I'm inclined to agree with Bo0bz: the Radeon HD 4570 is soldered onto the motherboard, and can't be removed.

Ok just came back from Ice-Tea's crib and started testing my gpu. Apparantly all I needed was a bios update xD
Just rank 3dmark06 at 675mhz and got a score of 4796 (compared to 4561 with 550 mhz...).
When I play AC2 with my gpu at 675mhz I reached a max temp of 91 celcius. I think i'm going to downclock it to 625mhz and 1.15 v (compared to 1.2v) and see if that will keep me under the 90 celcius barrier to make sure my gpu will last a bit longer (I know its supposed to be able to deal with 100 celcius but anything above 90 celcius is risky imo).

Anyway since my upgrade was a succes, I'd like to give special thanks for TehSuigi for creating this thread and answering my pm's and Ice-Tea ofcourse who offered me great service from mxm-upgrade.com

Now i'm totaly ready for the newest games and will be able to postphone my purchase of a new laptop/desktop for another year or two.

Yesterday I looked around at the acer website but didn't see anything like 'bios update' in the driver/software list.
Do you still have that bios on your computer Ice-Tea? If yes could you send it to me so I have a back up ^^

Btw, thx again for your great service (i.e. the many mails and the personal repair service :p )

Thx, I just downloaded v1.3813 since thats the latest one. Now I have everything I need for future formats ^^

If you receive a phone call in the future i'll probably mean it didn't work xD

Edit: btw just ran AC2 again with 625mhz@ 1.15 volt and it didnt go higher than 87 celcius (did it with AS5 though cuz you put on a bit too much rofl). I haven't tried fighting many enemies yet but I think this is a safe clock for the acer 5920G.

Unfortunately, I haven't run into a single Acer machine that can have an MXM-B card shoehorned into it. The Aspire 8935G has the room, but its heatsink won't cover the memory chips of an MXM-B card, and no one knows if the Aspire 8940G even uses MXM!

I read somewhere this info: the 8940g is mxm 3.b and it is compatible with these big cards..
But this notebook is tooo heavy, and big for me.. :(

    Hi,

so i've read most of the hundred-odd pages here...

From what I understand, the 6930g takes MXM II cards, but mine comes with 9300m GS, which is listed on the first page as MXM I - is it an MXM II slot with an MXM I card in? What are my upgrade options in either case?

BIOS version 0.3120, VGA BIOS version 62.98.3C.00.31 if that helps.

Sorry to come on here just asking for information - i'll try to give something back to the community when my lappy becomes awesome :p

@zsoca: Yeah, that was me before my information's validity got questioned. Now I just say I don't know. :s

@simonalexander: Welcome to the forums! You are correct that it is an MXM-I card in an MXM-II slot. Lower numbered cards can fit in an MXM slot (i.e. MXM-II card in MXM-III slot), but not the other way around.

Your best upgrade options would be two that wound up in different configurations of the Aspire 6930G: the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT, and the ATI Radeon HD 4650. If you're going for a GeForce 9600M GT, get the 512MB GDDR3-equipped version; that extra bandwidth really lets the 9600M GT shine. The Radeon, on the other hand, is only found in 1GB DDR2 models; make sure you're getting an MXM-II card and not an MXM-A.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the advice.

The card is for sale on Inforlandia , but the site shows it as MXM IV on the title, and MXM III in the description...

Can't say I've heard of an MXM-III or MXM-IV 9600M GT. So you could risk purchasing from them and be pleasantly surprised when it's an MXM-II card, or avoid Inforlandia altogether and opt for eBay.

I have a question about my gpu's voltage. I had to tweak down my clocks to 600 mhz to stay away from the 90 celcius range (now its steady at 86). The normal voltage at 675mhz is 1.2, and the voltage at 575 mhz should be 1.1 volts, the voltage at 600 mhz should be 1.15 volts.
Because I still reached 90 celcius at 625 mhz and 1.15 volts I chose 1.1 volts for my 600mhz clock.

My question is, how do I know if i'm not cripling my gpu with volt shortage? When I flashed my bios I got some sort of warning about an incompatible adapter or sth like that. But once I rebooted and tried playing everything worked perfectly. So..if it works...it must be fine right?

You get the warning about an incompatible adapter because you use a custom bios!

Undervolting does not cripple the GPU but going to low will cause it to hang, stutter, whatever. Ussualy not very subtle ;)

Since my gpu is running smoothly I guess my undervolting was a succes then ^^

Btw, thx for your advice about changing my thermal paste on my cpu, those people from acer applied like 3-4 times more thermal paste than neccesary (it was also dried up) so most of the paste was were it wasn't supposed to be.
Now the temps of both my gpu and cpu (8-9celcius lower) are in the safe zone. I'm about to order a t9300 or t9500 and am planning on making an entire acer 5920g upgrade guide (gpu, ram, hard drive, cpu, etc) but i'll post it in a seperate thread to keep this one for the gpu's ofc.

    Hey all,

I succesfully replaced my 8600m GS with a 9650m GT ;-) It was very simple and had no problems that no one else had. Like Arminator had, the original gpu screws were to short, so i had to use 2 of the cpu. ( So I need 4 cpu screws, anyone? ). I checked nibitor for some undervolting, but at my suprise it looks like it is standard undervolted.

Under the tab of voltages, and then exactmode my voltages are:
    - extra , 1,1V
    - 3D , 0,9V
    - Thrl, 0,9V
    - 2D, 0,9V

Is this correct? When i run 3dmark06 and furmark benchmarks it never hits above the 77degrees.

So I quess it is already undervolted since my 8600m gs almost hitted the 85 degrees.

    Cheers

    Hi!

    I bought my TravelMate 5520-503G32Mi (AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-60 - 3GB DDR2 - 320GB HDD - AtiRadeon X1250) 2 years ago. It came with X1250 video card. It's there a possibility to change it?

    Thank's for help!

Take screw plate from the back of your 8600m gs and replace the one on the 9650M gt...

It will fit with no problems since with only two screws you may have troubles with overheating... I did so and it works like a charm...

And one more thing, what are you GPU temps when idle and when under load, I would appreciate that  so I could compare it with mine...

And about voltage... It is not undervolted...
At Extra 3D voltage a put 0,92 V on mine and it works very well and stable with no loss of performance and the temp decreased for about 10C...

Hello Pandy01, and welcome to the forums!
Unfortunately, your TravelMate 5520 is not a discrete graphics model, and doesn't have the MXM port in it; your ATi Radeon X1250 is part of the chipset and thus embedded into your motherboard.
If you had a 5520 G, different story.

Thank you for the information, I will try that tonight. My idle temps are about 46degrees and with benchmark it will go up to 76/77degrees.

How do I put 0,92 in nibitor? because i can only choose 1,1V , 1.0V of 0,9V. Can I do that manual or something?

    And thanks for temps...

I have a really really hot CPU (90nm Turion) so my gpu heats a bit more than yours...

Yep! It says so in the initial post on this topic; the 8930G is an MXM-III notebook.
The trouble is finding an MXM card that's more powerful than the 9700M GT. Acer certainly hasn't released one, and trying other MXM-III cards might not work due to BIOS issues.
Still, worth a shot if you can find something.

Check if the cooper part of the cooling plate completely lays on GPU for best heat conducting...

I had to modify cooling plate a bit since the copper partly didn`t touch GPU core...

The copper plate is completely touching. Have better temps than with the cpu scews. Idle 42 and with furmark 73 at the max.

Is it possible to swap the motherboard to an intel? I hate AMD since it's getting hot and cpu upgrades are more expensive then intel. ( seen plenty of them for cheap ).

I dont think Aspire 5520g was sold with intel cpus so there is no boards for Intel cpu to replace the AMD one...
Well my my opinion great deal is Turion Tl-66 which can be found on ebay for 80$ + shipping...

You can also try overclocking your CPU to gain some extra performance boost... ;)

Tl-68 is just a bit more faster but way more expensive...

Nice chip but memory bandwidth limited and fairly hot (GTS250).

Not really; it's quite simple really.
I is smaller than II is smaller than III/HE is smaller than IV, and all are incompatible with A, which is smaller than B.

Hmz not sure you can call it stronger since it could do 2.4ghz at its stock 1.075v which is the lowest any Turion can be rated for.

So it could have been rated as a TL-68 (they did not exist at the time) and still have the lowest voltage set.

Looking at my results and my limited time (the motherboard had a faulty power connector) it looked like it was stable at 2.43ghz at 1.0V.

Early silicon, high quality. ****s over later chips. Just like the first G0 stepping Q6600s. They could go to 3.6ghz at low voltages while the later chips can hardly HIT 3ghz no matter the voltage.

    This one is just a bit stronger - TL-62 65nm Tyler AAA8G G2 stepping...

I managed to set FSB (HT) to 230 which made my current TL 60 go to 2300 it was stable but it didnt go further due to core limitations and 80C under load which also caused a GPU temp rise...

But this TL-62 should go further due to newer core...
