Seems that the nVidia chip is a good 1mm deeper than the ATI one, if it was the other way round i could have added a shim but I need some taken off the heatsink to get it to fit. Does anyone know if this is possible or should I just abandon trying? If thats the case what is the best nVidia card for my laptop? anyone know?
Thanks all for your help so far :)

Well, I had similar issue on my 5520G with installing 9650M GT so I had to remove some of the non-copper part of the GPU cooling plate to assure that copper part properly lays down on the GPU core and now it woks like a charm...
Also you can try with adding copper shim, it should fix the issue definitely...
    Glad it was useful... :)
    Cheers

as5 ftw (only 12g good paste)

I have one of those Asus cards! But its a 130m. I guess not so significant then. I haven't tested it at all because I knew about the EEPROM and vBIOS.

I was planning on soldering an MSI 9600m GT vBIOS and EEPROM onto the board, I didn't know where to do it exactly but now I think I do.

    Hi,

I had a question. Can I upgrade my Acer Aspire 5520G to graphic card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670? I am a newbie but I read that HD3650 is compatible.

    Thank you and
I am sorry for my English.

If it is MXM II it should work with no problems...

If it is MXM A or B it won`t since it is not compatible...

    Cheers

    Hi,

I've an Acer Aspire 7720ZG 3A2G16Mi, the specification is:
    CPU Intel T2370 1.73GHz
GPU Nvidia Geforce 9300M G 256MB (G86 M, the card is MXM, but it looks like there's enough space left for MXM II type)
    RAM 2G DDR
    Chipset PM965
    Bios 1.45

My graphic card is dead, I would like to know if this notebook's motherboard is same as Aspire 7200 / 7200G series's? Can I upgrade to ATI HD3650 (DDR2/DDR3) or ATI HD4650 DDR2, or by any card that is suitable for 7720G series?
    (eg: Aspire 7720G - MXM-II, 8400M GS, 9300M G, 9300M GS, 9500M GS, Upgrade to 9600M GT, Upgrade to 9650M GT, Upgrade to HD 3470 (7720ZG))

Can I upgrade also the CPU to T7700, T7600, T7300?
And put 4GB RAM instead of 2GB?

    Thanks

This post http://forum.notebookreview.com/compal/522959-ati-hd4670-mxm-upgrade.html#post6776779 seems to confirm it is a MXM II 2.1 card from what I can make out. Hope this info is accurate and helpful.

    @mjmacnab

If you are buying from mxm-upgrade.com, then it will be the version compatible with your laptop...

I have pointed it to check for the MXM type of the card if you were buying a GPU from ebay....

    Welcome to the forums, bookpb!
As far as I know, the Aspire 7720G nd 7720ZG are identical in all but CPU (the non-Z has a faster Core 2 Duo). The Radeons you listed should be fine.

Since the chipset is a PM965, you should have no problems moving to a T7300, T7500, or T7700, although I will recommend opting for a T8100, T8300, or T9300 instead. Those use the second-generation Core 2 Duo design, and run clock-for-clock faster.

4GB of RAM should actually be the easiest upgrade of the bunch - just remember that unless you're running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't be able to access all 4GB. Your license key on the bottom of your laptop should be good for 32- and 64-bit versions of the same edition, though.

I got a ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 34 00 working in a Acer Aspire 7520G.

Foto shows Acer Aspire 7520G with GPUZ, Display Settings and Device Manager.

I only get a few "strange" characters when booting and in the BIOS, where the vBIOS versions are listed.

Same with the 2400 XT and the 3450, I also can't get temperature readings so far.

Apart from that, a short test worked good.

I think the heat sink would need slight modifications, as it does not make perfect contact.

In case you need more information, I will maybe post a bit more on the card in the Compal forum - I think it will end up in the FL90. Of course you can PM me about it. You also may post here, but it might get lost/overlooked.

I got the card from ebay, from this seller.

This is by far the cheapest replacement for a broken 8400M G I ever found - by now its a bit more expensive, I got it to Germany for around 55€.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers

P.S.: Yes, this post is a cheap copy of my ATI 3450 post which was a cheap copy of my ATI HD 2400XT posting a few days ago, but as you can see, the test is for real.

    Meaker, amazing!

In the meantime, while I've been away, I had the opportunity to try an HD3650 in my tm7720-6486. It does not work. So, I can confirm that neither the HD3650 or HD4650 are viable upgrades to the HD 2400XT in my travelmate 7720g. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the motherboard design/pci-express, something more fundamental than just the power supply.

Anyway, time to save up for a new lappy!

@Meaker - Niiice! So it can run something from top-tier GPUs line-up :D Congrats, mate! BTW Since your "on way" list is way too long to keep track ( :p ) was there a HD5870 in there, or you left it for dessert?

No plans on the HD5870. I think the 5730 leaves me in a happy place right now.

No more cards on the way. I'm not ruling it out for the future but the cost is prohibative.

    A trend I have noticed:

    Dell cards tend to work.

The 460M I tried was a dell, it booted and operated fine, just the required bios elements were not in my system bios to get it to full clocks. The GT240M from a dell also worked. A 5870 from a dell could be a decent card to give a shot.

I have had an Acer Travelmate 7720G with ATi HD2600 graphics card, my Daughter in Belgium has an Acer Aspire 7720G with nvidia geforce2 8600M GT for more than 3 years.

The Travelmate has run without any problems but the Aspire has now lost its graphics card (I believe). Looking at card replacement I happened to come across this forum and I am trying to come to terms with models and form factors.

Looking at the list at the beginning of the thread, am I right that the Aspire 7720G seems to come with nvidia 8400 (amongst other)

Took me a little while to wake up to the fact that the Aspire 7720G in Belgium (bought in Belgium) came with the nvidia 8600M GT. (Mine is bought in Australia and the Travelmate 7720G was as close as I could get to a local copy of the same model, came with the ATi HD2600 card)

Yes I understand from searching that the graphics was a problem, it was returned to Acer under warranty after 2 years and 6 months, probably worked fine for 6-8 months but now out of warranty.

I am just looking for a fairly simple and safe replacement which does not involve BIOS work (presently flying blind is too much for my daughter) :)

Anyway I have a long way to go trying to figure out what way to jump.

Hi there, thanks for the useful post :)

I'm here for a huge problem, hoping u can help me. I've an Acer 5920g without graphic card (my old 8600gt died 2 months ago :( ), so i checked this 3d and bought a new graphic card, the 9500gs. The problem is that it doesn't work at all! All I get everytime is: nothing! I mean not even showing the first Acer screen, just black screen, and no booting at all.

I hoped that using the 9500gs on an Acer 5920g was simply "plug and play", but it seems I got wrong. Am I missing something?

That's why i'm looking for your help. I've tryed the graphic card on another Acer 5920g to check if it was my notebook or the graphic card to be broken, but it doesn't work in the same way! I've upgraded my BIOS to the latest version too, but nothing.

Now, I don't know if i'm missing something else. If not, I think that the only solution is that the graphic card i've bought is faulty. And if it is, how do u thing i've to proceed?

    Thanks :)

I would recommend getting an HD5730 like me.

The GTS250M runs quite hot (similar to the HD5730) however you can undervolt the 5730 back down to make it like the 5650 and it will run cooler than the 250M and still be faster.

By opening up the fan do you mean taking apart the machine to get to the CPU and GPU?

I was under the impression its just under one of the hatches in that model.

You can bend the CPU heatsink up a little to get to it and the GFX card just pops out. If you REALLY need to remove the ENTIRE thermal module then you will have to take the entire system apart.

Service manuals cannot be posted on here, but if you search for 5739g service manual in google there is a full one in the first few results ;)

Hey reading the service manual it looks like the connector is the same ones used in the 8xxx series of notebooks using an LED backlit display. If so you could get a dual channel LVDS cable and fit a FHD panel =)

I mean My fan is making donkey Kong noise all night long that is why i wanted to clean it up a little bit so that I could upgrade my cpu later and run all my dolphin games in 1080p lol. 720p just doesnt cut it. Also I want to play newer games so I want to upgrade. Thank you for the service manual. Im have much research ahead of me.

On second note: WHich type of CPU does my laptop use? I wanted to look at processors like t9800.

    akbisw,
I bought my T9550 on ebay. If you can find a T9800 on ebay, it "should" work as it uses the same core as the T9550. As for getting to the fan, I actually had the same problem at one point in time. I had to completely disassemble the laptop to get to it. Sadly there was nothing I could do anyway as I could not find a replacement fan. I had to send the laptop in to get the fan replaced.

    Meaker,
Where did you find your 5730?

Thank you so much guys. So im out of warranty and I tried opening the entire thing and I did. But I couldnt get the fan out. I guess I have to send it in. How much did it cost and how is it working so far. I hope that i does never occur anymore after repair.
Thanks again. I think I will be happy with a cpu upgrade to t9600 or t9800 whichever i can find cheaper. I wont care about the gpu for now.
The fans manufacturer is ADDA. Just checked out their website and they look awful in paper and up close. They fans are probably dirt cheap.

    akbisw,
My laptop was still under warranty, so my only cost was shipping. The fan that Acer put in it sounds as quiet as the day I first got the laptop. Did your 5739G come with a 130m or 240m? If it was the 240m, I wouldn't worry terribly much about upgrading.

Hello. I opened a new thread earlier, though now I see my question belongs more here.
My Aspire 5520G has GeForce 8600M GS 512Mb graphics which, by the looks of it, is no longer working (I've managed to disable it in safe mode, so that it can at least boot into windows. That and the green vertical lines on acer screen signify the problem is not mainboard but graphics, right? )
I've been browsing a little about how to replace it (this thread is great btw), but before ordering anything I just wanted to be sure I understood correctly. 8600M GT is most likely to work, you say. Will I also need to flash vbios and how do you do that?
On e-bay I've found many adds for "Manufacturer refurbished" 8600M GS or GT, which sell for about 35$. Is it ok if I order one of these? I'm not very well informed with prices of graphic cards, and to me this looks suspiciously cheap, that's why I'm asking LINK

Hello libellule, and welcome to the forums!

Not sure about the symptoms, but I can't say I've heard of a mainboard causing graphical issues.

The 8600M GT is one of the best options to upgrade to in terms of compatibility - it may not have been stock on the 5520G, but someone else at least upgraded to it.
Flashing the vBIOS should only be necessary if the card doesn't work once installed; the tool you need is nvFlash, and a decent guide is right here.

Unfortunately, that link you supplied won't help you at all. Those are unsoldered GPUs; far from helpful. You need an 8600M GT MXM-II card like these.

I have faced the exactly same problem with same laptop and same GPU... May be you should look for a card from Nvidias 9-series since the 8600M GT will most likely and as your 8600M GS did...As you can see in my signature I have replaced mine with 9650M GT and it works very nice... Also you can try getting ATIs Mobility HD3650 which should work and is in price range of 8600M GT which are cheaper than nvidia 9600/9650 cards...

    Cheers

In my 6920G, the heat grille is separate from the fan.

I believe that my fan came off, but the two heatpipes were connected.

Yea acer asked for $200 to replace the fan and I was like "hell no". So, I ordered my own parts and thanks again. I will let you know how it goes and then I will get the new cpu as well. My gpu 130m btw. Thats why i want to upgrade. cpu is c2d 2.1ghz.

    I still recommend a HD5730 :)

There are two options as far as the heatsink goes:

    1. It's not included in which case its removable.
    2. It's not removable which means it's included

So I opened it up again to make sure i know exactly what im doing when the fan arrives. I got some pretty pictures as well.

So yes you can remove the heatsink. And After I cleaned up the dirt and what not, i put it back in the case thing, spinned the cursed fan with my fingers and could not hear a sound. Theoretically it was still perfect. After reassembling my laptop, whaddya know, the sound is still there. So I guess I will have to try out the fan i ordered and then go from there. One good thing that came out of it was that my cpu temp lowered to 21c from 40c and gpu dropped to 39c from 50c. THATS AWESOME. I played around with the thermal paste a little bit that why. I ordered archtic silver so Ill see how that performs against this. I just dont know what keep hitting the fan blades, the vent is couple mm away from the fan btw.

If you dont care about 3d performance it's fine. If you do, look into faster replacements.
