Would the NVIDIA 9650M GT 1GB MXM II not fit in a 6920G?

    Would it fit? Yes.
Would it work? Probably yes. It hasn't been tested by any of our users yet but this laptop comes with 9500M GS and works fine with 9600M GT so it should also work with 9650M GT

Note that a 9600M GT GDDR3 would be a lot faster.

It should work although 9300M G and 9300M GS is not the same card so no one has attempted that yet.

I ordered 8600M GT since it was the cheapest out there - but still more costly than one would expect. (I mean, the laptops we speak of are 3+ years old, yet it is impossible to find a used graphic card for under 100€? The one I ordered was 135€, the cheaper were only auctions and I really don't have time now to wait for luck there... :( ) Sorry for the rant.
I wanted to ask something else. Should I update motherboard's bios prior to installing new graphic, or it isn't necessary? It still has the original bios.
    Thanks again for replies.

I don`t but it seems ebay prices jumped very high lately...
when I got my 9650M gt I paid for it 120 US$ and then 8600M GT was around 70-80 US$...
A hundred euros for 8600M GT is pretty much...

Considering the failure rate on the 8600m gt's I think they are just getting more rare.

    EDIT: HD5850 ON WAY! :D

The seller wrote me he already sold all 5 of 8600M GT he had, so I have to find another one. Yep, they are rare. And I don't want to spend 135€ on something that's probably going to fail soon. Would be an ATI card a better option, or are 3 year old graphics simply too old to expect them to work for another year or two? Before I leave the 8600M GT behind, I stumbled upon another one where the seller says that "the chipset was reinforced with blocjet, which allows it to remain on its place, even after a major overheating" (I'm translating). This means that they actually fixed the problem with 8600M, and the card is likely to have a longer lifespan?

The problem is that the solder balls crack, not that it then moves, but those microfisures stop conductance.

I want to upgrade acer 5520g from GeForce 8400m G.
I have two options GeForce 9600GT and Mobility Radeon HD 3650.

    Which of them would work?

At this page i found that radeon 3650 is going to work with new motherboard bios 1.33. Translate it with google chrome because it is in Polish.
NTBOOK.cz - Acer Aspire 5520g vymena graficke karty

I would like if somebody could confirm this.
Then on the other side 9600GT is faster and would be better upgrade.

srry if this has been asked I looked thro this forum and over the net and haven't really found an answer I also posted a reply in the aver 7720 major update thread but no answer. I have a acer aspire 7720g with 8400m gs and have to replace the gpu I figure I would drop a 9600m gt ddr3 since it is compatible. my question is wat size thermal pad (thickness and width) or wat should I use. srry I kinda a noob when it comes to laptops. any other advice that would help in the upgrade would be appreciated. thx in advance.

    Hi fakieskater,

Since its your 2nd post Welcome to the forum.
The 9600m gt ddr3 would be compatible as seen in the starting post.

I never used an thermal pad but used thermal grease instead. It works for me because I don't have a big gap to fill between the gpu and the heatpipes. I can't find the website where they sell those copper pads but you might want to look first if there is a gap to fill. If it fits perfectly you might want to find a good thermal grease/paste because there are some out there that perform better than a copper pad of other thermal pad.

Look at this thread for a copper mod: http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/482123-copper-mod-acer-aspire-4937g-nvidia-g105m-2.html

    Hey guys

I have a 4 year old Acer 5920g with an Nvidia 8600m GS that decide to crap out on me. Can anyone suggest the cheapest option for me to get my laptop functional again? I just want to use it for another month before buying a new laptop.
I am based in Ireland so if anyone can sell me a spare one it would be appreciated.

    Please let me know.

Just pluged Mobility Radeon HD 3650 in Acer Aspire 5520G, everything works fine except.

    Clock values are totaly wrong.
GPU speed is 100MHz higher than normal, Memory is 100MHz lower.
Pixel fill rate is same as texel fill rate, but GPU has twice TMU modules than ROP

Another thing that is strange is that in main bios video bios version is shown with some strange character artifacts.
Speed fan can not read gpu temperature.

I don't see anything wrong with that screenshot, 600mhz is stock for a ddr2 3650 and the memory clock is probably using the faster DDR2 that ati units tend to favour.

My 4650 DDR2 came at 625/500 and could clock to 750/605.

Please tell me how to change clock values.
Catalyst does not have overdrive option.
    Should i use RBE?

One thing that i do not understand is 8 TMU noted on wikipedia, and 4 TMU shown in gpu-z.

    3DMark 03, 05, 06 Fillate results are

Thats a pretty epic memory clock for DDR2 btw. What can you get out of the core clock?

    It has 4 ROPs.

I would recommend MSI afterburner. You need to edit the config file for it to allow overclocking but its easy to do.

Actually the 5730 is back in atm. The power circuitry got too hot on the 5850 and is getting repaired.

Looking to retrofit the M17X GPU heatsink for when I get it back to cover the VRMS. I can maybe over lap the memory segment of my current cooler and make it act like a single block.

Thanks to improved cooling I am now running the 5730 @ 910/1125 :)

In other system news I am getting 8GB of ram to test soon.

Well. Meaker thanks for all your help. I saved myself from Acer charging me 200 dollars. Got the fan today($26 shipped) and had to unsolder the gpu heatsink from the previous fan with bare hands(lol) and Put in inside and it works. It pushes out a lot more air than the previous. Im still waiting for my 5730 btw, when it comes ill share my results with you all.
    Thanks again Meaker.
btw Asians are super cheap. They sent the freaking fan in a plastic container instead of a regular box. cheap cheap cheap.
heh. I bought it for 26 dollars from Singapore, what more could i expect :)

BTW- I got the 5730, mxm A, for $156 incase anyone was wondering. and UP for sale is 130m in EBAY(will be shortly).

I will be back when i have more money in hand. Cause unlike most of you here Im only 17 and i go to high school. Then i can upgrade my panel

I was going to say, you sound like you've got cooling mods under control... Why don't you just cut a piece of thick copper out with metal shears and thermal tape it to the VRMs?
    Works pretty well for me.

Honestly, its relieving to make something like that after trying to retrofit parts from other laptops.

I have been thinking about doing that, but the best idea is probably to desolder the heatpipe from a w870cu heatsink or something for that full cover of copper plating and then mount new heatpipes or the Acer ones to it with thermal glue.

Does anyone know if the 8935g uses the same motherboard as the 5935g?
If not, what is up with MXM upgrade?
    Acer 5935G MXM upgrade

The beginning of this thread links that to the 8935g, and the url say 8935g

    Nevermind, found the service guide.
That link is confusing, the 8935g is completely different and does have space for the type B cards.

5730 is faster than 4670 mainly because it has 400 unified shaders vs. 320 in 4670. It's also manufactured in lower process 40nm vs. 55nm

Plus the 5730 given the headroom will tend to clock higher.

    Hi all!

I wanto to buy a new card, I was thinking of Nvidia 9500 GS

Can anyboydy tell me if there has been someone who made this upgrade?
has he told his expereince? a link would be great.

Also trying to find a list o website with the compatibles card for my notebook.

    Welcome to the forums, Martin!
If your Acer Aspire 5720Z came with an Nvidia or ATi GPU like the GeForce 8400M GS, then it's a 5720Z G. Woohoo, you can upgrade! If you had the Intel GMA X3000, then you'd have the non-G model without a hope of upgrading.

The 9500M GS is not the most popular upgrade, mostly because it's just a refined 8600M GT. If I were you, I'd take a look at the top post in this topic and review who else has upgraded a 5720G or 5720ZG; as I understand it, the two are similar enough to be interchangeable when it comes to MXM upgrades.

Thank you very much for your answer.

This is a new subject for me and I have quite a few questions and concerns. I am taking a rather big chance to buy this card instead of the card my notebook originally came with (8400 Gs) but I think the upgrade worth the try.

I bought a used 9500 GS and I realized that the seller was also ofering almost new ones for only 15 USD more. When I asked him about changing the order he told me that the old card was better

    He wrote to me:

    "Dear mithrandir_martin,
HI, this is also 9500M GS, under my test G84-626-A2(used) compatibility is better than (G84-625-A2) both 2 can work with alienware M17R1 , but only G84-626-A2 can work with acer 4520G and 4920G SO I think the used one is better for you and condition almost like new, thanks"

As you can see he tell me that the new 9500 GS worked only on the M17R1 but the used one worked also in two other Acer models.

Is this possible???? Have you heard something like this before or it is just to be able to sell the old card??

The seller seems to know what he is talking about and I have to confess I have no clue about it :))

Can you tell me if I'll need a Bios upgrade? Is it possible to get an Acer Bios that works like an add on with only the graphic card? Becasuse I think it should be almost imposible to get a Bios with all the same hardware my notebook has....
Where I can find the drivers that could work for this card in the 5720ZG?
Well thank you very much in advance for everything!

    Martin.

Successful upgrade of "Acer TravelMate 6593G - MXM-II, HD 3470" with an "Nvidia GeForce 9650M GT 512MB GDDR3" (Nvidia P616, G96-650-C1). Card fitted perfectly, screws etc. also perfectly. Driver problem fixed by adding the card to the latest drivers (268.58) downloaded directly from Nvidia.com. Added the card to "ListDevices.txt" and "nvac.inf". Then I simply ran the setup.exe file. Temps tested using HWMonitor from CPUID. Idle remains on 41-42 degrees Celsius. Highest temps during the 3Dmark06 test was 79 degrees Celsius. 3Dmark06 Score 5793. Tested on WinXP Pro SP3.

If it shipped with the 9700M GT then you are going to have to go into uncharted terratory and different MXM-III card like a 9800GS and see if it works.

Toshiba MXMs don't have BIOS on board so none.
That's why it states "incompatible with everything" ;) on eBay auction

    Why not?

Woah, toshiba is crazy. They use that same vga board for nvidia cards

I have a gt 130m like that. I soldered an EEPROM with 9600m GT vbios into the upper left corner there, but nothing happened.

Hi! I finally got hold of a 8600m gt (which is going to replace the broken 8600m gs in my Aspire 5520G), but there's a problem. The 'new' card came without screwing plate. I tried to use the old one, but it is glued on and I'm affraid of completely destroying the card (well I want to have a working computer in case there are further problems, even though it only works in safe mode). Is it safe to pull it off? Or can I fixate the new card using bigger screws and no screwing plate/will this damage the chip?
One more thing: The old one was also wrapped in some kind of alu protection (like this: http://images3.okr.ro/auctions.v3/700_700/2011/01/10/c/6/249230593-3132496-700_700.jpg ), which the new one doesn't have. Should I take this silvery thing off and wrap the new card, or it isn't necessary?
    thanks in advance

    Hi Guys,

My 6935g just died on me. I left in powered down but plugged in while I was away for a few days and came to find it competly dead. Not light from the side blue LED's and no chance of it booting.

It was however making a clicking noise every 1.5 secs or so, and of course I investigated. With the graphics card out it the clicking stopped, the LED's lit up and the lappy even made an attempt at booting (but as far as i can tell, doesn't make it to Windows)
So my obvious suspicion is around the card, a 9600m gt 512 ddr3 that came stock with the laptop.

Only visible damge on the card is some dark markings around what I'm guessing are the power pins, on the top right edge of the connector in this pic:

Do i have any options in my case?
Given that I can't see any bios screens can i be sure my lappy isn't dead?
Is the only option for a 6935g to hunt down another 9600m gt (either 512 or 1gb ddr2)?

    .

I have a AS 5520G myself and I replaced my 8600m gs by a 9650m gt. My new card did not have a screwplate so I used my old one. The screwplate is sticked to the card with dubble sided tape. Just gently push al 4 the screwpins down and it will come off. Don't be afraid to break your card because if you push the metal screwpins nothing will happen!
