The same rules apply for it as the 5920G. However, I haven't yet made a BIOS mod for the 4720G/ZG to support 9600M GT cards.

    DONE!!!

I've successfully upgraded my 7720G from 8600M GT to 9600M GT, without problem, I've just needed to upgrade BIOS to V1.45, easy to download from acer main site.

    Thanks to the forum.

    Yes, mine es 1GB ram.

If you are totally amateur, consider to ask a profesional to update BIOS, to make it wrong could mean a serious damage to your laptop, I did it, and changing card and updating BIOS only took 20 €.

About the cost, I found it in Ebay, totally new, near to 135 €.

I hope this can help you.

    Greetings from Spain.

will the Nvidia Quadro NVS 5100M work in place of a 9500M GS in an acer aspire 6920g

I've based it on the previous statement that the GT 330M is fastest, Only thing I can see is my MXM is 2.1 and the 5100 and 330M is MXM-A 3.0.

You can find GT 330M in MXM 2.0 format, but it's hard to find, builded especially for Toshiba A500, (look on the chip : N11P-GE1-A3) :

So to my original question, 3.0 in 2.1 no go?

Anyone has experience with the tool vgabios.exe? Should it work for ATI as well as NVidia mxm cards?

I have this card with erased bios chip, so notebook boots with blank screen. I wonder if when I execute the bios file using vgabios.exe, the screen should come alive. For me it doesn't, the notebooks hangs.

Vgabios.exe tends to have problems with large VBIOSes (ones with full 65536 byte size).

There was a question a little while back, maybe in the 'acer' section about throwing a backwards mxm type II card in a normal slot and doing a heatsync mod. does anyone know if this would work or are there some other electrical issues with doing something like that?

There really are some kickass mxm II cards out there, but they are all backwards!

also, Is the 330m offered in mxm II? If so, where can I get one? If not, what is the MOST POWERFUL card I can put in my aspire 6920g?

So after I've seen this card listed in several places as being compatible with aspire 5920G I went ahead and bought it to replace the dead 8600M GS it came with. Now the laptop won't even post. Anyone can confirm if it's possible to flash the vbios to make it work?

@nitroflow: Likely a "true" MXM 8600M GT. Use the same SBIOS patch as for a 9600M GT.

Might you be referring to the bios you've posted here? If so, how would I flash it with the damaged card? Can windows even start up without a GPU? If so you know any premade usb windows with vnc access?

OFFTOPIC: Will that monitor you have on your sig work on the 5920G without modification or will some rewiring be needed?

    Yes, that BIOS.

You can use a crisis disk to flash, or you can just boot to Windows (with no MXM card plugged in) and use Remote Desktop to flash. Another possibility is to prepare a USB DOS boot disk with Phlash16 on it, and boot from it by removing the HDD.

The 5920G can't take anything better than 1280x800 unless you make a new display cable yourself (I believe one can be made by rearranging the motherboard-side pins on a 7720G's cable). The 5920G's cable has only one LVDS link connected, and there exists no laptop with the same LVDS pinout as the 5920G. (At least on the motherboard the 2nd link is indeed connected, though.)

So I've created a USB DOS Boot disk with phlash16 and the bios and proceeded to blind flashing the bios by running "phlash16 5920G_MXM_V3.WPH". Some noise and a couple of beeps, modeline changes and a white screen later, and the card still does not work. Any more ideas? Or am I stuck with buying a new card(whenever I can afford one)?

No. Neither HDMI or VGA work. And the laptop still doesn't boot or seem to POST with the card inserted. Maybe flashing the vbios would work idk but don't have access to a laptop where I could do it. Either way it's strange since it comes from an ACER machine and several parts vendors list the part number as being compatible with 5920G. I'll probably gonna try getting a 8600M GT or GS when I have the money just to verify if the problem lies in the motherboard.

    There are two differences.

    1. Size of the card.
    2. Heatsink mounts.

the heatsync could always be modded with a copper plate, and I think the card would fit with a case mod.

do you think it is doable?

You should have just a copper shim between the chip and the cooler. Both sides of the shim should be covered with thermal grease.

    @ Nitroflow,

Yeah what you have there is a 9500M GS. That is why it will not post in the 5920, because they don't. It is NetRolller 3D's fix you need. You have NetRolllers thread where you got the .Net's BIOS from. The method for blind flash is on that thread. You could do it by floppy, which is how I recovered a bad flash, with IJo09's upload. Also .Net figured out the way to flash with other medium than a floppy, so you should be fine.

However you will run into other issues with when you get it going anyway. The 9500M GS suffers powermizer flicker in the 5920. In Vista the Acer website drivers cure that. I believe the Vista Acer drivers cure it in Win 7, but I never tried it.

Confusingly the code VG.8PG06.005 is applied to the 9500M GS, and the VG.8PG06 number is applied to 8600M GT's. Usually in the latter case is followed by .001, or .002. Both are the same card, the P407 board, and have the same G84-625-A2 chip. If you get stuck, I think you can flash the 9500 into an 8600, and that will resolve the flicker.

P.S. I think you do get beeps and flashes even if the SBIOS flash does not work. I think that is the laptop initialising. The USB will flicker etc. I had a situation almost identical. When I got the right flashing tool, with the right vBIOS, everything happened the same. Only that time the laptop started up.

    @mhook,

I think I saw before on this thread that the 3470 didn't work in the 5920, (to some suprise). Maybe have a look back fifty+ pages.

    Hey everyone.

I have an Acer Aspire 7738g with t6400 and GT130M that I'm looking to upgrade, since it's getting a bit old...

I'm thinking about getting a q9100 cpu, but i have no idea what gpu i should look for... Anyone have any tips for me?

Also, do I need to get a new power adapter or something, new fans etc??

    Thanks in advance

No, even if you do the hardware mod to fit MXM-B cards, the Nvidia series need bios support to be able to go into 3d clocks.

You could modify the Vbios to increase the 2d clocks but you could never use it on battery as the power draw on the battery would at best shut off your machine at worst make your battery melt.

The best card thats plug and play is the 6770M 1GB GDDR5 which is an MXM-A card.

Unlocked Q9200 QAVR stepping. With throttlestop you can then set the frequency and voltage.

You can also swap in a 1080p panel instead of the 1600x900.

q9200 was actually cheaper than i thought, that's a plus. was originally looking at q9100.

Are you talking about setting frequency and voltage for overclocking, or is that something that has to be done to make it work? To keep it cooler maybe?

And I see you had a 6770m up for sale, i assume you've sold it by now? :p

    thanks for your help

Edit: And I don't think i'm gonna bother with the screen for now, i'm pretty satisfied with the original one so far

Edit2: No hd6770m to be found on ebay, but it seems they still have them here: http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?SearchText=hd6770m&catId=0 and i see you have experience with them. How does it work, is it like ebay without the bidding in that different people can put stuff up for sale there?

The bios string in GPUz is not reliable, it usually just looks at the system.

There is no such thing as an Acer 6770M, that's far too close to using GDDR5. Acer don't like GDDR5.

I dont know if you can see the members market but niffcreature is selling an MXM-A 6650 with GDDR5 for $165.

Its the GDDR5 thats important and I am sure notching up the voltage in the bios would get you above stock 6770M speeds.
