Hi guys, wonderful thread here.
I was wondering, I have an Aspire 5750G that comes equipped with a 1GB GT-540M card. It's not a bad card, but I know there are better versions of it out there (for example the GF116-based 630M), with similar power draws. Does anyone know anything regarding upgrades for the 5750G? I would also prefer nVidia, since I'm suspecting that sticking an AMD card into a system that comes equipped with both integrated and dedicated graphics is asking for trouble. I'm assuming Optimus would still work in the case of an upgrade?
Many thanks.

It can't be upgraded as it isn't an MXM unit.

Hi Guys,
please share your advice with me! I'v bought a firegl V5700 for my Travelmate 5720g. The card is a pro version of hd3650. It should work with my laptop, but it doesn't. I have the latest bios installed. The laptop doesn't start at all with this card. Everything goes OK when the original X2500 is inserted.
Please help me if you can! -

Do you have pic of the card?
-

It looks like it has an EEPROM, so I don't know what to tell you, perhaps the card is dead. The cards from the HP 8530w tend to have a very high rate of failure, they are non standard cards not really meant for use in other laptops.
-
I wonder, do all 8530w cards with EEPROMs have actual valid data in the EEPROM; or does the 8530w always just use a built-in VBIOS in the SBIOS?
-

I've never really experienced a card with an EEPROM not working, maybe a few, but 80% of the cards I had stopped working later. That said they were all fx 770m, only 2 were ATI cards.

Did you try going to device manager > update driver > browse my computer > let me choose > have disk > find .inf file in driver package and select it, then force the installation and ignore warnings?
-
You will need to edit nvac.inf in the Display.Driver subdirectory.
First, open your video card in Device Manager, go to the Details tab, and select Hardware IDs or Compatible IDs.
There should be one line that looks like this: PCI\VEN_ XXXX&DEV_ YYYY&SUBSYS_ ZZZZZZZZ
Open nvac.inf, and search for the YYYY part in the previous ID. There will probably be multiple lines containing your YYYY value (usually "0649" for 9600M GT); just take the first one. At the end of the line, there should be an ID in the form of:
PCI\VEN_ XXXX&DEV_ YYYY&SUBSYS_ QQQQQQQQ
XXXX and YYYY should be the same as in Device Manager. If QQQQQQQQ = ZZZZZZZZ, you're done. Otherwise, do a global search and replace in nvac.inf, replacing QQQQQQQQ with ZZZZZZZZ.
Then, save nvac.inf and run the driver setup again. -
It worked!!!!
thank's a lot...
But... i wonder why a official nvidia driver do not recognize a wide common
card as a 9600M GT -
Because, according to Microsoft, there is no such thing as a "GeForce 9600M GT".
Instead, there is "GeForce 9600M GT installed in an Acer Aspire 8930G", "GeForce 9600M GT installed in an MSI GX620", and so on.
However, "GeForce 9600M GT installed in an Acer Aspire 5720G/7720G" doesn't exist either - only "GeForce 8400M GS installed in an Acer 5720G/7720G", "GeForce 8600M GT installed in an Acer 5720G/7720G", "Mobility Radeon X2300 installed in an Acer 5720G/7720G" and "Mobility Radeon HD2600 installed in an Acer 5720G/7720G" exist.
Microsoft forces Nvidia to consider MXM cards to be tightly coupled to the system they were made for - even if this contradicts the very purpose of MXM. -
-
Does anybody have a bracket for the 9600M GT to sell?
the metal plate indicated by YELLOW arrows...
mine has a not working screw hole.. and i would like to replace it...
HELP me..
thank's a lot !!!!! -
Hey guys,
I have Acer 5720z with NVIDIA 8400M GS.
Video card is gone and I wanted to know with what can I replace it.
I've read that I can go with nvidia 9600?
Can I go with that one? And do I have to replace the cooling paste on the processor, because in order to change the video card I have to remove the heat sink of the processor.
Thanks in advance for the help! -

Hello, Arthuro, welcome to NBR.
And remember, after removing the heatsink always replace the thermal compound. So arm yourself with a bit of alcohol(acetone etc.), a clean cloth and a tube of your favorite thermal paste.
Edit: after rereading your post, I'm not really sure you can. -
Hey Katalin,
Thank you for the prompt answer and the opinion! Now I know that I'm the right way.
However, I see that it's hard to find this types of video card - I was looking for 8600m, 9600m, 9650m.. So, maybe I'll have to look deeper.
Basically, can I use every card that fits the slot? What I got like information is that my current nvidia 8400m GS is MXM-I socket, and 9600m is MXM-II..
Or, I have to take in consideration some other type of compatibility?
Thanks for the welcome and prompt answer. -

@ArthuroManx, katalin_2003, Bo0bz: Acer did not use the "G" marking in all markets. I've seen many non-G 5720s with Nvidia graphics.
And yes, the 9600M GT will work plug-and-play in any 5720 with an MXM slot. The board has enough space for MXM-II.
@Bo0bz: Regarding your signature, use an ICL50 motherboard, rather than an ICK70 one; the latter will prevent you from using the front audio connectors. (ICK70 is for 17 inch models.) -

@Bo0bz, @.NetRolller 3D
Thank you all for the kind and prompt response!
I feel more comfortable now, knowing that it can be done!
Indeed it's 5720z and it has nVIDIA graphic card. I had some hard time figuring all out, because it's first time for me to do it.
So in conclusion, I'll change my dead 8400m with 9600m.
One more thing - what is the best or a good thermal compound?
From what I've read, the steps should be like this:
Remove heat sink,
Clean processor chip
Put thermal paste?
And thermal paste should be the size of rice grain?
Thanks again for all the help, guys!
Best wishes! -
@ArthuroManx, Remove heatsinks, remove al the old thermal compound (best to use Articlean but I used nail polish remover), Put in your new GFX card, put thermal paste just enough to cover the whole area when spread out, mount heatsink and enjoy!
@Netrolller 3D, the GT230m you're using is that just plug 'n play or did you mod stuff? I thought toshiba cards did now have a bios chip. -
@ArthuroManx: I would recommend Arctic MX-2 or MX-4.
@Bo0bz: It needs some serious SMD modding to get the 230M to work (I think it is described in the MXM BIOS thread); you're probably better off with an Asus GT 240M. -
@Netroller 3D, can't seem to find an Asus GT240M on ebay but that one will work out of the box? Do you have a link or specific part number?

There are 2 known part numbers; NTSVG1000 and NW2VG1000. They appear to be the same, with the exception of PCB color. -
Thanks Netroller
First I will have to solve another issue. I recently updated my drivers (Nvidia GF9650M GT. But now my screen starts hanging and a popup will appear that the Display drivers stopped working and has recovered. I forgot which driver I used to have installed. Any help on this? -
In Device Manager, select your video card, go to the Driver tab and click Restore.
-
Thanks, I found another way. There is a map C:\NVIDIA that lists all the drivers I installed for my gfx card. I picked to previous one to install after I deleted the new drivers!

Good to see the thread still going, your machine is pretty pimped netrolller. The meaker "on way" sig has returned, may it bring you good luck in all of your modding quests

so whats the best mxm 2.1 card - 3a that my acer 8930g supports other than the quadro fx 3700m.
I heard that some 4870s and 6xxx series were rolling around even some nvidia gt 2xx and 3xx that require soldering -
-
That should be the real thing.
-
@Bo0bz - Nice find
Guys, I got couple of ASUS GT 240Ms for test, which drivers should I get and how to install them (modifying infs and etc, new to nVIDIA). I'll probably end-up selling them, but I can't beat the price above
-
-
No problem
Their information sections looks a bit weird
-
Technically spoken does a MXM III (not 3.0) work in a MXM-II slot if there is enough space for the card? or does it have other power needs? -
It's a laptop to laptop thing, but in most cases it would. Cooling it is another question
-
niffcreature ex computer dyke
I've tested 2 acers with MXM 2.1 III cards, works pretty well in general if you can deal with the card sticking out of the chassis or whatever.
How did you burn your motherboard trying to replace it with Intel? -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Either way please do this Triturbo. Go where I failed (killed the 4850 by flashed wrong vbios to it haha) -
I was thinking about it A LOT of times. Even if I manage to make a supa-dupa custom CPU heatsink (two of the four screws, securing the heatsink, are on the way of the GPU), NO fan is going to fit in the limited space that is left (at least, not one that is going to make difference with its presence)
(Internal) MXM-III/HE mod for 5920G is a definite NO-GO
Was it completely dead? I mean have you tried to solder a blank EEPROM over there? -
King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Who knows I was so annoyed I took a hammer and smashed it to bits hahaha!
-
LOL that's the hardest core way of "fixing" it
I bet in the end it could fit even in MXM-I machine
-

currently my laptop using gf9500m gs..
already pay for gt 240m from that site but they refund back after i told that my laptop is 6920g not 5920..
