    @ u6b36ef thanks for answer...

this is the Copper Pad Shim that i use on my card:
10pcs Copper Hearsinks&Cooling Copper Pad Shim laptop CPU Size:15mm*15mm*0.5mm | eBay
(are you sure can i put biger Copper Pad Shim from this?)
and i put Copper Pad Shim like can you see in this photo: http://i49.tinypic.com/208xkyv.jpg
i use paste on both sides of the shim.
    please tell me your opinion.

i am sorry for bad english...

    @ Avora said me:
" I just suggest that the GPU needs lower voltage to reduce the temperature. However on these machines the heatsink is all one so the CPU can be undervolted as well to further help the cooling of the GPU. In my 5920g I fitted a t8100 CPU which reduced the heat. And then fitted a 4650 with a copper shim. These created a faster and yet cooler system. Just my solution, I know that it works if its done correctly. "

what about this? about undervolting of GPU (.the temp o my CPU is 63 C max in idle mode, can i try undervolting of CPU ?)

    That looks fine.
I had 15mmx11mm, and I replaced it with 15mmx15mm, and it took a degree or two off straight away. (I cut these pieces from a salvaged laptop heatsink.) **It's just that the more shim you have touching the heatsink, the cooler it can get. **

In this 5920 for example there is a black plastic squarey shaped thing which sits on the heatsink. I guess it's just a guide for placing thermal pads. I think some people remove them, but anyway that has a size that would limit shim size, to about 17mmx17mm. It might be advantageous temperature related to remove the plasicky thing, and use a 20mmx20mm shim. Can't say, as I never tried it, but the theory is good.

By the way, is that a picture of your 9600M GT?

    Hi guys
I just got my hd 4670 mxm2 from MSI. I installed it in my Acer 6935G but it doesn't boot, the screen doesnt turn on. I can hear fans, and the gpu is getting hot.
Does it mean, I cannot use this gpu or is there a way to make it work?

You can mark HD 4670 GDDR3 512MB from MSI working on Acer 6935G as well. I had to reset my bios after 9600m gt failure. Temps are 43-65 celsius. I used Zalman zm-stg2 thermal paste and Phobya XT heatpads.

Atiwinflash and RBE come to mind for the flashing end of things. Overclocking can be done with programs like Sapphire TRIXX, and Overdrive with Catalyst.

    +1 for Sapphire TRIXX

@u6b36ef - You are lucky, if I put 0,5mm shim it wont make good contact, so 0,9 for me.

@dedalos91 - Maybe that's your problem as well, check if it makes good contact.

@popek189 - Congrats, and welcome to the club :D One question, if it's from a laptop, how comes it's an ES? Probably the laptop itself was an ES?

This is because I have Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Catalyst drivers don't work under win8 yet, so it uses something like WDDM 1.1 driver. The gpu itself is awesome and not that hot. Its even cooler than my previous 9600m gt, but mainly due to fresh heatpads and paste.

He is referring to the copper heat sink, which is why some folks have to use shims to get a good, all the way across contact.

Yes, I mean that you probably need thicker one, like me. The best way to check it, is to get the GPU out and see what is the footprint. If it's very thin, next to none, than you are OK with the paste job/copper shim thickness, but also means that your problem is elsewhere. If it's thick, and the paste haven't covered the entire core, repaste, tighten the screws all the way down, check again, if it's the same, you have to shop thicker shim.

I am sorry but with this "see what is the footprint" mean the gap between gpu and aluminum cooler plate ? or the surface area of gpu ?
do you mean the footprint of the gpu on the paste? the thickness of the paste ?
the big thickness (more paste) is better ? or not...
i am sorry but my english is little bad.
    thanks

This is what I mean. How much the GPU's core contacts with the copper shim. Thinner (less) paste is better. "Big thickness (more paste)" is NOT better.

    Hi TehSuigi,

many thanks for your post. I was looking for this for a while. Because I cannot increase my graphic card performance, here is my question:
my laptop is an ACER ASPIRE 6530G with an ATI RADEON 4570 512MB. I would like to know whether I can replace my current MXM-II card to the Radeon HD 4650 1GB DDR2 (M96) [VG.M9606.005] [VG.M9606.006] card. So, I would gain 512MB more.

I have found it here for a reasonable price:
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 HD4650 MXM II 1GB DDR2 HD 4670 UK | eBay

    http://www.ebay.es/itm/ATI-Mobility...raphics_Video_TV_Cards_TW&hash=item20c6c110c7

would you think it would be a correct idea to get a new one?

    Thanks again :)

It can be upgraded to HD4650 MXM-II. (the first link)

The card in the second one is not MXM II so it won't work.

Hi, I ve bought from ebay Asus NVIDIA 9650M GT DDR2 1GB MXM II VGA Card, to place it into my laptop ACER 5520G, but its NOT compatible.
The chipset from ASUS card is from the oposite side of the card than the previews.
So coolling system of previews card, can not touch and cool the chipset. I didnt even try to turn on the laptop without cooling.
This is something which someone can see it from photos.

Hi, you can turn on the laptop, just to see if the card works just for test, but you should look before buy this card of the heat sink side. Usually this type of cards are used in Asus laptops like you mention and cannot be fitted in Acer. But, just make a try without cooling- you will not harm the video. Unfortunately, you must sell this card and buy another one .

"The chipset from ASUS card is from the oposite side of the card than the previews."

    @skaramanlis
    What do you mean?
    1) If you card is not as described, not like the picture (preview) - send it back. Item not as described. (45 days to open case of you need to.)
    2) If it was as described, ask nicely if you can return.
    3) If you bought 'buy it now' you have seven days from receiving it - to request return, automatic - just for changing your mind: under distance selling regulations. (Provided you have not used it.) See ebay policies or email them.

    @ Triturbo
I didn't stop thinking about your cooling. After roaming ebay, I found, quite a few very well priced 5920 coolers. Also I noticed something I had not seen before. Before rev.3C the coolers appear to be in two parts, and the ones I saw were not made by Foxconn - the meatal heatsink parts I mean. Whereas mine (FOXCONN rev. 3C), I think is only in one complete part - see the picture: Foxconn written in the aluminium, near the fan. Also the model number on the CPU cooler is FOX*****. Maybe that is key. Either way for £5 you could buy one and try it. Maybe look for one with Sunon fan, then at least you could salvage the fan if that is all that helps. Or I even saw a Sunon fan for £3 alone.

    + dedalos91
I don't know if it helps, but I recently remembered the first time I put this 9600M GT in the 5920. We couldn't clock up then (pre .NetRolller fixing the bug), but I remembered mentioning the idle temps were cool. (First post: this page.) http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/575866-acer-mxm-bios-mods-discussion-x920g-vs-9600m-gt-9.html

Anyway I'm now going to have to retry the 9600M GT/5920 combo, making sure I have my larger area shim fitted.
By the way: I no longer use my external fan, as the seasons have changed and the temps have cooled. Room temp at about 18-19'C and the 8920/9600M GT is fine. It was really only at 22'C+ it needed help. (Really though 22'C is quite oht to expect a laptop to game anyway, without cooling help.) Even then I used cooling for my own peace of mind. The external laptop fan kept it at steady 80'C allways, however warm room temp got. I discovered the idea by accident, because my room fan cooled me and the notebook. I got to thinking, but what when room temp doesn't need cooling, but notebook could go a few degrees cooler. I read about people using deskfans, but then I had the slavaged laptop fan idea.

I would say it is an ideal solution for hot GPU's.
    Plus points: It works.
Minus points: Using only the + and - , it runs at full speed. Exactly like having another laptop fan run on full. Thus use the quietest you can find, or mod it to run slightly slower, or run two at slower quieter speed.

    Hi. IT .W.O.R.K.i.N.G.!!!!!

    I have aspire 5520g(8400m g128m stock)160gb hitachi hdd i did upgrade to ( GF 9600m GT 1gb DDR2 and 320gb wd caviar hdd )

For my 5520g and GF9600M GT1024m DDR2 ( i used Your modded SBIOS from firs page of post " http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/575866-acer-mxm-bios-mods-discussion-x920g-vs-9600m-gt.html " and this resolved problem with MXM- structure 30sec delay. Also i did ur pach from above changing device id in nvac.inf from driver dowloaded fom LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers and i use filtering my iD device but u can download diffrent driver for ur windows but u have to use modified .INF to install it manualy inside Windows and resolve standard VGA card driver problem also clocks.

Iu 3d mark 06 is only 845 score total but if i egual all scores it will be 3000points i think it can be more.

Maybe someone can tell me why score is so low and lowest is processor 63 points? / and how to fix it?

    I attach some pics.

    Hi again,
with this model of MXM ASUS 9650GT, the chipset was at the oposite side, and the chipset is touching the plastic case.
Not even try to turn it not, I can imagine what can happen with the chipset touching the plastic case of laptop.
I ve send the card back to China, and bought Nvidia MXM II GeForce 9600M GT DDR3 512MB For Acer (NEW), Ive check the photos now, and its from the correct side the chipset.
From day to day I will recieve the new card and I ll write here too.
I hope this card will be the last one...

I installed this card about one year ago. The only driver that works with it is Nvidia official driver version 260.99. I have to say that when you install it you have to place all the "thermally conductive rubbers" in its positions or you'll have some artifacts. These artifacts are caused by a overheating of some chips of the card. When card is well cooled these artifacts disappear.

    This is my screenshot.

    Hi all,

    Big problem here.

    I have A Acer 7520G with a 8400M that didn't gave any screen.

Gave the card a reflow, but it lasted for a month.

I took a look on ebay and bought an ATI 3650 for the 5920G.

After I received this card it wouldn't work in the 7520G.

After that I bought a 8600M GS from another 5920G and that one wouldn't work either!!

Where lays the problem? are the 5920G graphics card not compatible with the 7520G ?

    Thanks in advance!!

    hi...
i own 6920g and just upgrade my cpu fm t8100 to t 9500.
also my graphic card fm gf 9500gs to gt 240m (asus)..
hwvr, i can't install the graphic card driver automatically...
need to choose and signed it manually via device manager..
after reboot, try to install with latest driver failed...
try to updated+scan driver online, the nvidia site told that driver must use fm the device manufacturer..
do i need to update the vbios with acer one...??

apologies if this question has already been asked but is it possible to use GDDR3 ram in place of GDDR2. I have an Acer 5920g laptop whose graphics card is most probably gone (as I can see various colourful lines all over the screen. Can I buy ATI Radeon 256MB HD3650 DDR3 to work in it??

That wasn't really addressed at you though ;)
Your posts are fine since these are adding to knowledge base and as such shouldn't start any discussion & are in place in both threads.

My comment was addressed at someone whose cross-post I deleted twice. Questions should be asked in one place only- otherwise they end up creating two separate discussions when people start answering.

Try flashing the VBIOS to this: download - filecloud.io
(Make sure you back up your old VBIOS, in case something goes wrong!)

Likely your video driver was auto-updated. Newer Nvidia drivers appear to have problems with PCI-E link width power saving on G96 GPUs. This VBIOS disables that feature altogether, locking the link with at x16, which works around this bug.

(Note: Previously I wrote that this is probably caused by a missing chip on the MXM card itself, but as more and more people are experiencing this issue, including people who had this feature work perfectly before, I'm now compelled to chalk this up to a driver bug instead.)

The SBIOS patch should already take care of the Thrtl issue.

The VBIOS is for the DDR3 version, so do not flash it into a DDR2 card. In another topic, however, I think I posted how you can patch your own VBIOS.
