    Hi Guys ,
I bought our son an Acer Predator 17 from Currys / PC World on 1st May 2016 - last night the screen went black while the keyboard continued to show its lights - the computer wouldn't shut down though no matter what I did -
I'm very disappointed and angry - what are my rights now ?
I don't want a laptop that has broken down so early in its life - do I qualify for a new repacement or a refund ?
I wouldn't mind excganging it for another model for the equivalent money - not sure how my son will feel if he gets another Acer .

I didn't want to unscrew the back of the laptop to remove the battery so I unplugged it and let it die down - this morning it fired up and the screen was working once more !
Should I put up with this or get the laptop exchanged ?

I phoned Currys who tell me via automated call to phone Acer , I phone Acer where surprise surprise an Automated answer tell me to email them !!
What a complete bad joke of a company - had I known I would get no support whatsoever I would NOT have bought from Currys and I would NOT have bought an Acer .
    BEWARE !!

No you shouldn't get it exchanged. If we exchanged our computers every time something hangs we would have a new one every month.
Next time something like that happens keep the power button pressed for 5 seconds - this should switch it off.

If something like that keeps happening, that will be an entirely different matter but as of now, there is no need to do anything.

Take it to the branch where you bought the laptop, demand to see the manager and explain him that faulty goods must be refunded or replaced, there's no need for you to contact the manufacturer as the retailer should take full responsibility for the goods they sell. This is why as soon as you start a purchase process the sales assistant try to sell you an Insurance policy.

Thank you Downloads and Ellalan , much appreciated .

I tried holding down the On/Off button for 5 seconds then 30 seconds but it wouldn't turn itself off .
I didn't want to void the warranty so I didn't take the back casing off where the battery is situated , I unplugged it and let the battery drain - this morning it powered up no problem .
I phoned Currys - an automated answer directed me to Acer - an automated reply told me to email Acer !!
I then found a telephone number for Acer Support - the nice Indian gentleman told me it was ' static electricity ' causing the problem and that the Acer Predator 17 should only be used on battery power alone - don't use it plugged in was the advice I was given .
Is that good advice or am I being fobbed off .

It was only 36 days old .

Thank you Ellalan for your support - Last night I was panicking about the whole thing and while it did power up once more this morning I am not 100% happy about the situation .
I live 3 hours drive away from Inverness but I will go there this weekend to see what the Manager has to say - ' Which ' magazine's advice is not completely clear about what happens to my rights after 30 days but ' Moneysavingexpert.com ' give the same advice as yourself .

Thank you both for replying - I opened an account with Acer last night to seek advice - I have zero replies thus far .
This place is BRILLIANT and I'm very happy to be part of it .
