Have somebody this laptop?
I want to buy but i readed some reviews and there are some discrepancies about a temperatures.

What is a normal temps in load (games)?

 

the notebook is very cool, you need to adjust the fan profiles but after you done that it's one of the very few that run cool even on stock thermal paste.

 

Are you the owner of this laptop?
What is max temp on CPU during a game session?

I mean specially PUBG.

 

As I said it completely depends on fan profile and thermal paste. You can easily get 60s temp in PUBG.

 

I understud but do you have your own experience with this laptop or you saw some test somewhere?

 

I'm also interesting in this laptop, but i have not see yet any video review of this new model and i'm waiting for some real comments.
I have to decide between the Predator Helios 500 with i9 and the ASUS Zephyrus M, both with 1070.

Hi, here's a review on the new Acer Helios 500.
In the video you can see my impression of the notebook, unboxing and a game test with BF1 and Players Unknown Battlegrounds.

Yikes! Those seem like low scores. Getting 1270 multicore cinebench r15 with slimmer asus gl703ge. Does notebookcheck test with undervolt?

 

I don't think we've seen any owners here yet on NBR but we need someone with one to do the undervolt and other tuning to get the best performance and then write up the results.

Until then we've only got the notebookreview article, and they don't undervolt, it's all just stock with no tuning, which means the CPU will power throttle and thermal throttle when put under heavy use - and show performance drops with back to back tests without 100% cooling.

IDK why they do that, run back to back tests without 100% fan, or undervolt, but they do. Be aware that undervolting will give you more head room, and 100% fan or custom fan curve will improve performance.

Some reviewers are starting to at least undervolt -100mV and rerun a few benchmarks, showing good improvements in scores, but they don't do any further undervolt tuning on the CPU or undervolt the Pascal GPU, nor do they set up custom fan curves or RTSS tuning - so gaming benchmarks are unlimited FPS - nice for a score but not when you actually want to gave for a few hours.

Awesome! Thank You! I have an Asus gl703ge which i've gotten up to 1270 multicore cinebench r15. I'll be doing liquid metal and copper coil just to push the boundaries and see how much multicore horse power i can get out of it (focused on code compilation and other high processing and less on relatively high refresh graphics needs).

 

As long as you aren't thermal throttling, you won't gain performance from cooling further.

Undervolting with ThrottleStop or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility core and cache on the CPU and GPU will also help with power throttling, so give that a try before wasting time re-pasting.

You can also tune the fan curve on CPU / GPU (if the vendor tools works) to reduce temperature a little further at high load, or reduce fan noise at low load operation.

I also recommend setting up RTSS to limit FPS to the screen refresh to save CPU / GPU rendering frames not used, that can reduce heat and fan noise for all games rendering higher than display refresh rate.

There are plenty of software settings available for tuning the system, application, game, along with tools like RTSS that can be used to tune with software first. Once you have the software optimized then you have a good base to work from, with tests and temperatures noted for future reference, to use for comparison after doing other software / hardware changes like re-paste / re-pad to get solid numbers on what the improvement from the change really is.

Usually after software tuning there is no longer a performance need to re-paste / re-pad, except for vanity reasons / something to do for fun.

You usuall have 7-14 days after purchase to return a new laptop, so if you can't get the laptop to stop thermal throttling even after applying tuning techniques, undervolting, fan curve tuning, FPS limiting, power plan settings (Balanced 0% / 100% vs High Performance 100% / 100%), it's better to return your unit for a new one instead of embarking on a time consuming self-help DIY path - or RMA, just return it and get a new one - usually 99% of the units are good after tuning out of the box.

On the same note, is it possibe to get higher cinebench r15 multicore scores? What laptop or combination of components (laptop of course) would yield that?

Well, I don't know what you are looking for in that score, are you doing work that uses applications that scale better performance for more cores as well as higher per core performance?

If you get an Intel 8th generation 6c/12t CPU in a laptop that has power and cooling to handle full performance then you may get more performance.

Ryzen CPU's can give you 8c / 16t in a couple of laptops now - there is a Helios 500 Ryzen 1700x + Vega 56 model, here's the discussion thread:

Core i9 Done Right! - Acer Helios 500

Review of the Acer Predator Helios 500. The most powerful gaming laptop from Acer. With an overclockable i9 - 8950HK, GTX 1070 and up to 64 gigs RAM, the Helios 500 delivers some crazy performance. This is one of the best performing laptops for the price. Excellent thermal performance with easily upgraded hardware. Acer did a fantastic job on this. It's not as durable as an Alienware device but it will be cheaper and lighter with awesome performance.

This does look like a promising laptop. And honestly Acer has been doing so well on design and thermal management lately. I have the Triton 700 and it runs about the same temps as the 1070 Max-Q laptops that have come out in last few months and it runs a 1080 Max-Q. So long story short if they can keep a 18.9mm thick laptop cool and reasonably quiet then this beast is gonna be an excellent machine. And pretty reasonable at $2000.
