Has anyone heard or read about the Acer - Aspire R14 2-in-1 14" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 8GB Memory - 512GB Solid State Drive?
-
Just picked one of these up today. Removed all the bloatware (I think they added it to keep the price down, but who cares when it comes with these specs)? This thing has been running smooth throughout its first day. I love the back-lit keyboard, the track-pad is pretty solid (it sometimes takes a spit second it to identify whether it is a palm or a finger triggering movement) and features some really awesome and convenient two and three finger gestures for smooth scrolling and useful multitasking. The touchscreen has been very smooth; I haven't noticed any sluggishness or lag. All in all, for an Intel i7 processor, 8gb of RAM, and a 512 SSD hard drive- this thing is a steal at Best Buy's sale price of $829, in my personal opinion.

THANK you so much for your reply.
I appreciate it so much. Sorry to see it went up in price now from 8 to 9.
I wonder if it will come down any time soon? -
Where can I buy one right now besides Bestbuy?
Will the price come down again or ever?
Please answer, I am getting anxious but price is kinda high for me at this time. -
I just bought one. I m on it now. Incredible specs for the price. I believe it is a Best Buy exclusive.

Bless you for your reply here.
I really want to buy one right now and am wondering if Acer Store would be safe to order from. It is cheaper than from Best Buy.
Thank you. -

Sup guys? Been laptopless (And desktopless) for a while and surviving on an Acer Switch 10 for almost a year which is a great little tablet in its own right. Armed with some giftcards I picked one of these guys up at Best Buy. I think its got some bang for the buck and I've always found 14 inchers to be my sweetspot for size. Wasn't so sure about the convertible thing since I had a bad experience with my Yoga 2 Pro. But so far so good. Clean installed it and it runs nice and stable. I've had some interesting experiences with Acer in the past so we'll see. Thought I'd check in and see how other owners are fairing.
It's an attractive looking package. I'm impressed with how solid this R14 feels. There is no sagging or creaking when lifting it and screen doesn't wobble much when pushing it. The hinges seem to be plastic but sturdy. The keyboard has no flex but while not uncomfortable it is very shallow and the keys feel small which is apparently Acer's solution to the keyboard sticking out when in tablet mode. I like the oversized touchpad. The screen is probably the weakest part of the package coming from the Yoga. The lower 1080p resolution is fine for me but its not as bright nor vivid mine has some light splotches when viewing black backgrounds and I notice it has a grainy sparkle to it on white backgrounds like my Dell Inspiron 6000 did back in the day. But I don't know I should expect more for the price of entry difference. Neither is much of an issue in regular use. And not forgetting its very quiet and runs cool where as my Yoga wasn't much of a laptop it would get so hot. I used it with a cooler meant for a gaming notebook alot of the time. Haven't really used it on battery so can't say how good that is but played some City Skylines and there were no complaints.
It does look like its $30 cheaper at Acer's website before shipping. I don't have any experience ordering from Acer but my experiences with them over the phone haven't been the greatest. Unfortunately, they seem to have alot of bad reviews on here http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Acer.Last edited: Feb 6, 2016Urlee likes this. -
Great report! THANK you.
Well, I ordered the Acer R5- Tuesday, 2/9/2016
Hope I know what to do when I first turn it on?
I am concerned as to what anti virus protector I should use on it if Defender isn't good?
I heard Bitdefender is a good one if works with W10, and where does one download free one from?
Thanks for your replies here, to help me get going in finally ordering it.Last edited: Feb 12, 2016 -

Antivirus is pretty subjective. I've used Avira practically forever. It's free and fairly lightweight. I have no experience with Bitdefender.
Its been a few weeks now and my R5 still runs fine. I notice things sound real bassy on the headphone jack so I need to find some kind of equalizer. Battery life is the best I've had on any laptop thus far. Easily getting eight hours. Gonna have fun with this on my roadtrip in April. -
Yes, I used it two days on the battery and decided to recharge when it had 1½ hours left. I was amazed!
One sad discovery about it is, it came with McAfee activated? I want to get it off.
I also am a little confused as to what steps to take to get the factory default backup on to a flash drive?
I am elderly to where it does not come easy to understand how things are written up, let alone find where to go on this new system. (I need baby steps)
All in all, I sure am enjoying it so far.

It is pretty fast. Even so I might try to open her up and verify the memory isn't upgradeable. This thing would be even sweeter with 16Gb RAM. Reporting 6 hours remaining with 69% of battery and I've watched almost all of the Saiyan Saga in DragonballZ with my niece today with it on battery killing time on the web. Nah you're doing fine. Just uninstall McAfee unless you really want to use it. I don't really bother with factory backups myself. It comes with a recovery partition for a reason (granted I killed that). Just back up your own stuff on an external HDD or using a good cloud like Onedrive. But it you need it looks like Acer has a handy dandy video on doing the factory backup.
And another negative I'm noticing is this guy is a fingerprint magnet.Last edited: Feb 19, 2016Urlee likes this. -
How can I EVER THANK YOU?
THAT did it. THANKS to you, I now have a recovery saved to a flashdrive.
Yes, I agree thoroughly, it IS a fingerprint magnet!
I wish it was white instead of black? (smiles)
BLESS you. You made my day. -

This convertible got a little hot last night on me while recharging. I'll keep an eye on this and temps as I'm not fond of hot notebooks. I like to be able to use them as laptops. I wish more manufacturers would start placing vents on the sides instead of a few modest vents on the back rear.
-
I usually charge it when I am using it till it shows full charge so I haven't noticed it getting hot?
I sure hope it doesn't fail in any way cause I am getting more attached to it the more I learn how to use it.
I want to thank you again for the GREAT help you gave me. I needed that in case I screw up along the way?
I then got rid of McAfee. Defender took over so I will see how that one is compared to Avast.
I ran a full scan and scanned with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, so I feel like I got a load off my mind right now.
Now I have to see about opening an MSN account (UGH) to be able to use this to it's fullest. Little by little I will have it going. -
Still up and at um.
It sure has a sharp screen.
The speakers are amazing! I LOVE the stereo sound.
I do not care for Edge browser plagued with msn crap on home page.
I hesitate to open an msn account, so may lose the ability to use certain features and programs?
I LOVE using the backlighted keyboard. (I am a hunt 'n peck person)
Just thought I'd share incase anyone is interested.
