I've ordered a TravelMate 8200, but having only afterward having found the bad review am now worried. Anyhow, I wanted to try to make sure the gamble was safer by trying to ensure I get a newer build. The date is not printed on the outside of the packaging but the serial number may be.
I can't believe I just asked Acer and they told me:
First 10 digits/chars refer to the part
number of the laptop (ie. model/build type)
Then digit 11 is the build year eg. 6 => 2006
Digits 12 and 13 give the week number of the build
The rest must then I guess be a unique sequential number.
Dunno what the trailing letter is.

This seems to the "longer" manufacturing serial number not the
tech support serial which may be the one visible from the outside
of the packaging.
