    Hi,

I'm considering buying this model notebook*. I'm overseas at the moment and can't drop into a shop to have a gawk. But I've found a good price online, and am really tempted by it.

So can anyone tell me their opinions of it? Also, what the heck is a DVD-Dual drive? Same as a combo? Different how?

I'm a teacher, so I want it at the very basic level for lesson plans, research on the net, e-mails and the occassional presentation. But I also like to play - AOEII, SimCity4, Counter Strike, etc - so I want something with a reasonable graphics capacity.

    * As offered it is: Acer TM 4001 WLMi, PM 1.5 GHz, 512 RAM, 40GB, 15.4 TFT, DVD-Dual.

    Cheers

It is a good laptop with a descent Video. It can burn DVD+-R/RW and CDR/RW. For the games you mentioned Video is OK (perfomance of Intel Extreme Graphics 2 = GeForce 2). Disadvantage is that Video uses main RAM (shared up to 64Mb?). So do not expect much of 3D games.
In my opinion TM4501WLMi having the same specs is better because of the dedicated Video (MR9700 wirh 64Mb VRAM) but it is more expensive too.

Just to add my 2 cents worth.

The 4001 in some countries (Malaysia) has an ATI 9700 GPU w/64MB, so it depends on where it's being purchased. Most models only have an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 GPU.

DVD Dual = Plays DVDs & Burns DVD+/- media as well as plays CD's & burns CD-R/RW discs
    Combo Drive = Plays DVD's only, plays CD's & burns CD-R/RW discs

You may want to consider the Acer Aspire 1681WLMi. This is pretty much exactly like the 4000 series, but has a better GPU (ATI 9700 w/64MB) and a 60GB HDD. The battery is the only minus, it's only rated for approx 2.5hrs of runtime (4 cell bettery). You can buy a 4000 series battery and use that, it should be compatible. That will give you approx 5hrs of battery runtime. The 1681 is approx $1300US.
