Okay, so a while back my TravelMate 8204's main cooling fan started buzzing and grindng and eventually stopped spinning, rendering my laptop useless. I sent it into Acer repair, they fixed it under warranty, no problem at all.

Now... it's happened again. It was literally working perfectly fine yesterday. I left my laptop on all night, the fan was on one of it's lower speeds, and I wake up this morning to the same demonic buzzing noise. I am so cross it's unbelievable

How long is Acer's warranty on their repairs? EDIT - just learned that it is 90 days... it's been 11 months since my last fan/heatsink replacement. Looks like I'm gonna have to pay for this one. This is the last Acer I'll ever own.

Any advice besides sending it in?

How much will this cost (straight from the reciept of my last repair):

PARTS USED part number 60.taxv7.007 Thermal Module
REPAIR COMMENTS replaced the CPU heatsink/fan assembly

I think you just need to replace the fan, not the heatsink as well.

I don't know how much it would cost but if you can obtain the parts I'd just do that. The fan should be easy to replace. It'll be cheap, too. Maybe get 5 or so fans to be covered for when it happens again :D

Yea, looking in there I see some screws and a simple plug... is this a possible do-it-yourself? Where could I order the fan?

Does anyone have any experience in changing the fan/heatsink assembly. I found a place where I can order one, but it's like 50 bucks. I want to make sure I can put this in.

I've swapped the fan assembly between two 8204s and it was pretty straightforward. Where did you find one for order? I could use a spare or two....

Hey can you tell me what part this was? I am in the same boat. My laptop is dead in the water and Acer are giving me crap about just getting the part.

All I need is the dang fan! Lol.

You will probably find that Acer never put a new replacement fan in there. The lappie was still under warranty so, in order to save costs, they replaced it with a used fan. Would (hopefully) keep you going until just out of warranty.

Unfortunately, thats a fact of life for most tech repairs these days. All about saving money for the company.

Company first and customer last. Sad.

Heat sink is 60.TAXV7.007 but that's the entire heat sink assembly (including Fan) I just looked since it seems mine was/is dying.

Clean it out first though, seems to have stopped mine being problematic (for now).
