Will a Core i3 processor with integrated graphics handle H.264 MKV playback at 1080p without any issues? I'm considering pulling the trigger on the latest Acer TimelineX AS3820T(-6480). As far as I can tell the only difference between this and last year's models are a faster processor (2.53 GHz) and a larger hard drive (500 MB).

I thought it should be fine, but a friend who has a core 2 duo processor says that he can't play anything at 1080p without pauses on a regular basis, so I thought I'd check to make sure.

It should have Intel HD Graphics (your friend has Intel GMA 4500 or inferior graphics), which allows for H.264 1080p playback. And the i3 should be more powerful than most C2D processors. It should be able to play them fine.

I can play 1080p on sw / cpu alone with about half a core under linux with an i5 460M CPU. I'd imagine with using hardware accell your machine should just about fall asleep CPUwise while playing them.

Edited to add that that's 1/2 of one core running at 1.2GHz because it never clocks up while playing 1080p mkv / mp4 / m4v files.
