Synthetics today normally take into account total 100% active processing power, including blips of turbo boost and hyperthreading. In real application usage, those two CPU's are about equal. Certain tasks such as encoding or compression, the i5 will be faster if the application supports only one thread (turbo) or more than two (HT).

Either way, it does sound like the complaint is hard drive related. First thing to do is make sure that the hard drive isn't cranking away at idle - this will noticeably slow down tasks that the user launches. Background defrag is fine and I turn off indexing as there are much better applications that do their own indexing more efficiently and quicker to search through (instant instead of waiting some seconds). Other than that, running CrystalDiskMark on the two systems can show if the hard drive is truly the bottleneck that is causing the complaints.

i will test this on both systems. is there any setting i should prefer? never ran this app before

btw... what are the standard settings for hdd aam/apm ? i dont wanna get both values disabled by quiethdd all the time... this might stress the hardware and energyusage while i dont use it all the time...

Does anyone know if there would be a significant (or any at all) change in performance going from PCI-E 1.1 to 2.0?

You set the frequencies in "AMD GPU clock tool" (a different program) while running ATI Tool in artifact scanning mode. Start from 600/900 and go up with 10 each step.

If I put an ES CPU in, can I expect decent overclocking performance? Are all ES CPUs less tolerant, or is a roll of the dice? Cuz it seems like that even with OEM CPUs. :)

My nVidia card was running at PCI-E 1.1 in my desktop because of a bug in X38 and I didn't had any kind of lags or frame drops, but nVidia driver is I think much better optimised.

PCI-E 1.1 is just my idea for what could cause the lag. It's just that 3dmark06 has a lag, and there have been many reports about lags or drops or glue effects in games.

Yes, GPU-Z shows same thing, 1.1, on both 3820TG (10.8) and 4820TG (shipped drivers).

    here are my results...

acer with aam/apm disabled (dont know the default values to set it back as it was)
with this options set there is a faster behaviour in windows

    p310 all by defaults

so the hardware spec of the hdd cant be the problem

Performance difference with a desktop GTX480 card between 8x gen 2 (same as 16x gen1) and 16x gen 2 is 0-1%, so considering your card uses the bus less then I would guess 0-0.05%.

maybe someone can give hints for higher cpu oc
any value beyond 38 in 10/00 results in reboot

Is CPU-Z misreading your CPU? You have the I5-460M and not the I5-540M shown in CPUZ? Have you checked the ID on your clockgen (i.e.- have you had your motherboard out yet?)

@bydus - Did you read that "2.0" from the box in GPU-Z or did you hover to see the tooltip? The box only says what your card is capable of, not what the computer is using. Could you please verify this? :)

it looks like ATItool has a wayyy nicer interface that allows you to find the max clocks that your gpu can handle safely, but it's all greyed out for me! Got some kernal error, but someone said that that didn't matter a page ago.

first line says 540, one line under it says 460... very strange

might there be something wrong with my system?

ps. once again... what are the default values for apm/aam??

pss. u can use the ati tool interface.. just run your windows without driver signification and have fun with it...

Hey Guys, I have a brand new Acer 3820TG. Worked fine out of the box and then i ran Windows Updates. After restarting, something totally wrong happened. Here it goes:

    1. I cannot run Windows Update anymore
    2. Immediately after restart, if i press a key or use the touchpad the screen automatically dims and then I can't make it bright again by using the designated CTRL + Arows keys, as nothing happens
    3. Cannot access network, nor by Cable or by Wireless. as it says that they are not active
    4. Cannot access power options, i click it and nothing happens
    5. Cannot access
    6. cannot use Recovery from Windows as it says that there's a problem with the disk.
    7. Overall system loads incredibly slow

These are what i managed to notice till now.

What can i do to make these right. I have pretty good knowledge with computers, tried a lot of solutions, like reseting updates, etc. Nothing worked.

The easy way would be to reinstall Windows, however i do not have a recovery partition on the device, nor a recovery disk included...

I am running Windows 7 Home premium.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Did you delete the factory partitions?

If you did not delete or modify them you can hold ctrl + F10 (i think - it might be alt instead of ctrl) to get a factory re-image.

@dookie11 I did uninstall drivers for LAn and wireless, then restarted windows and let it reconfigure them. Made no difference.

@tgoode nothing happens when booting and pressing F10, Ctrl+F10 or F9 or F11. Tried them all, I did not delete the recovery partition, I just believe that there isn't any... Or maybe it is and I'm missing something?

One more thing: just noticed that all my aero themes are deactivated and can only use the Basic one...

Just the CPU-Z tool is not up to date.

Also the 450M wasn't detected right with earlierer versions.

You have to activate the D2D in the Bios and to press the hotkeys while the BIOS is loading.

Just try it a few times, it is difficult to hit the right moment.

@bydus. You are sure you are holding your pointer over the tab to make it show what the gpu actually is running at? It will say PCI-2 2.0 x16 in the tab, but if u hold your pointer over it, it shows capable speed, and actual speed.

It is just an idea what could cause the lag.

You cannot compare it to nVidia, as nVidia's software side is simply a different world. Have you seen the GTX460 running in DIY viDock @ PCI-E x1 with 3dmark 14500 points? At x1! Even for a USB 3.0 you would want x4.

OK, i have just checked the PCI-E issue in XP, and it's the same (it's at 2.5 in HW-Info). So it might not be the reason for the lags. Maybe some device driver is causing it in Windows 7. But it doesn't make sense, as it always happens at the same place in the benchmark. I don't know.

Just wanted to post to say thanks to Bronsky and Hendrickson for their guides in this thread, and others for the helpful discussion.

Spent about a month mulling over where to place my tech-love for the near future, and I eventually plumped for the 3820tg (i5-450M, HD5650). Imported one from Germany, swapped out keyboard and HDD (for Momentus XT). Love the little blighter.

    Cheers, guys.)

Hope your MOBO lives to fight another day, Bronsky.

    Hey

Im thinking of buying a 3820TG, the ATI 5650 model, but I have a question:
The ATI 5650 GPU in the Core i3 370m is exactly the same as in the Core i5 460m, isn't it ?

    Thanks

Just ran 3dmark06 on my new 3820tg. After installing the latest drivers for the ATI card (doing steps 1-5 as described earlier in this thread) i got 6307 points. SM 2.0 and SM 3.0 (2724 and 3215 respectivly) seems to be on par with what hendrickson got on his first run (as posted at the first page of this thread), but the CPU scoure was only 1362, compared to Hendrickson's 2658.

Both cores reached over 101 degrees (measured both with core temp0.99.8 and real temp 3.60). The GPU was fine, maxing at 68 degrees.

I ran the test with my display set at 1366x768 if that makes any difference.

Any clues to the low CPU score and the high temps?

    My system is
    i5 450m @ 2.4ghz
    ati 5650 (catalyst 10.8)
    4gb ddr3
    320gb
    win 7 home premium 64bit
