Did you use HWMonitor? If yes, then you should return it or send it in to repair, as it will die soon with this cooling. Something is broken in your cooling system.

Thanks for the response! I have no idea about what could possibly cause the lagging. When I tried to record it with Fraps, the lag was gone. Maybe it's because of the 450M's frequency control (as that is the only difference between our computers).

hi, how exactly do you overclock the GPU and how big is the risk associated with doing so?

    hey guys..

i noticed some very strange behaviour with my cpu performance...

i tried assasins creed 2 all maxed in 1920x1080 all @ stock clock and watched 40fps (just a scene.. no matter what)

after this, i overclocked the gpu to 730/920 and the fps meter has shown 50fps

after this i wanted to oc the cpu to see, what difference this makes.
    so i changed 00/00 from 23 to 29, 0F/00 from D8 to D7 and 10/00 from 31 to 38

and what do i see? i got about 10fps less ?!?! is there anything wrong or is there something wrong in my head while changing values in setfsb?

This is a common issue, M4crOs called it "glue effect".

Older games experience slowdowns on OCed CPUs, AFAIK there's no solution for this issue.

Just wondering if anyone has noticed stuttering on their laptop.

I noticed mine stutters every 10 minutes for like a second? It's annoying when you're playing a game, lol. And I noticed it stuttered once today when watching a video in VLC.

Thanks alot for all the replies on my overheating CPU.

I guess opening it and fixing it voids the warranty?

Is HWMonitor more accurate than core temp and real temp? Both core temp and real temp showed 104 degrees.

Take the easy way and replace the unit. If you replace the heatsink and it don't work, you have to pay for the service at the heatsink.

I thought that would be best too. However, just to be sure, I ran the 3dmark06 test again. This time I used HWmonitor instead of core temp / real temp. Tada. Now I got 7471 points (2725/3376/2679) and the cores didnt go higher than 76 degrees. The GPU reached 69.

Still I feel there is something wrong. If the cores reached 104 degrees two times before, I guess they could do it again. Also, could they have been damaged by reaching such high temps?

When I play COD at 1280x1024 on external monitor (no AA), the game starts lagging after about 30 mins of play. I thought that game would run flawless on much higher settings.

If the cores wont overheat again, how do I convince the store to replace the machine? I didnt save any logs :(

Try it four times and ceate a temparuture log while you are playing.

The last temps are okay for the 3820TG.

Is it just me or has Cendirect removed any mention of the 5650 on their website:
    http://www.cendirect.com/main_en/tech_specs_JO65876O.html

When this was first brought up, that was the same link that said that was the 3820 with the 5650 and now there's no mention of it anywhere =/

Is this the one you bought AriStar? The one from Cendirect with 5650? Any problems with the i3 so far? I don't imagine there would tho :)

My HD5650 doesn't seem to be an OC champ, is it possible because of the 10.8 catalyst? No stability over 630/930 yet, i set AtiTools artifact scan to speed up the load raise, but core @640 starts to error after 10 min. Temps arount 72C, fan max 70%...

    Other

Any free tool yet, to overclock CPU?

that's very strange. the original acer model number that had the 5650 was AS3820TG-7360, but now cendirect has changed it to AS3820TG-374G50nks. the stock # is the same for both though. I really hope mine is the correct one.

Fixing it on Your own voids the warranty. You should either send it i for warramty repair, or - maybe better - have the notebook changed.

HWMonitor is accurate IMO. I'm using real temp as well - mainly for logging - and both of them show the same readings.

Anyone break 10k mark in 3dm2006?

The HD5650 in my 3820TG can oc easily to 750/1120, scored 9834 in 3dm06, cat 10.8, i5-460 at stock speed though (how to oc with setfsb, couldn't figure out).

Any tips for me to break 10k, maybe wait for the winter?

Here are some general comments on 3820tg:

    Good sides:

    - HD5650 seems to be prefect for nb of this size and weight, and a lot of headroom to overclock. Most games play smoothly at the native resolution.

    - Very effective cooling, and more importantly it's quite silent even at full loading.

    - The Athero wifi is the best I ever used so far, even better than the Intel one in my previous 1810TZ, often pick up signal no other device ever could.

    - 6+ hours battery life for a moderately powerful yet cheap light nb is hard to find elsewhere.

    Bad sides:

    - The flat filmsy kb... everybody already know this..

    - Audio/USB/HDMI/VGA connectors are a bit too close to the front, makes my desk really really messy when using with LCD monitor, KB/Mouse and spk at home.

    - The stock 5400RPM WD Scorpion HDD is a snail to work with. Replace with a 7200RPM is a must (even better with Seagate's hybrid or the best, a SSD) and the first thing u should do.

    - The dreaded electronic noise. It's almost unbearable with earphones at silent night. The noise seems to associate with mechanical harddrive. With a SSD it's much less noticeable due to much shortened disk activity time.

    - The WIFI is always on after a reboot. Launch Manager should have remembered the last state, come on someone in Acer should know how to do that.

    - The Atheros GE LAN is disappointing, could only reach ~20MB/s. When I tried jumbo frame setting, BSOD with netio.sys is almost guarranteed if JF set above 5k.

    - The stock PSU doesn't fit into the theme. It's like big and thick a brick and is also in used with 4820TG.

    - The LCD frame is like a dust magnet, it grows hair faster than my beard lol :D

    BTW, my first post here.

how is it that you can o/c your gpu to these clocks and i cant? I can run games at 690/1090 clcoks but going above that freezes my laptop. Have you updated your bios ? (what version do you have). I want to o/c mine as high as yours :/

oh and btw there has been ppl going over 10k in 3dmark06 but they had more powerful CPU like i7, so if u upgraded yours im sure you would go there xD

    Hey guys,
Im going to be ordering this from Germany in the next couple of days and have a few questions....is the momentus xt the best hard drive to go for leaving aside ssd? What kind of spec is the wireless that comes as standard? From following this thread I see a lot of you have changed it....does it have 300mbs n? 5ghz? I'd maybe be thinking of switching to intel 6200/6300 and throw in an extra aerial if I got the 6300...is there a good UK keyboard to swap with the German one? Any recommendations where to buy? Also what type of power chord would I need...does it connect like this... [IMG]

And where would you buy a UK one? Is it the same as the 3810 adaptor?
    Thanks a milliom

Maybe just pure luck, and the LCD panel is LG :D

It's my 2nd 3820TG, the first one don't oc pass 650/1100 and had a dead pixel, so I got a free replacement.

Yeah i updated to the lastest BIOS dunno if it matter.

As for CPU, I couldnt have any success with setfsb. I found the correct clock gen but system restart with the slightest touch of slider.

Hi ahfung, my first post, too.
I'm considering replacing my one week old 4820TG (i5-460m) with a 3820TG due to its smaller size and supposedly better cooling. From what I've read in the 3820/4820 owner's lounges I got the impression that the 4820TG (460m) OC far better than the 3820 (460m). But now you show some pretty good OC, similar to this post by RobsTV4820TG.

In another post (quote below) again RobsTV assumes that the 460m 4820TG OC better because of the newer ATI Bios. Which Bios ver do you have? Apparently he has the 460m 3820TG btw.

BIOS version is 012.020.000.017, dated 2010/04/07, so I suppose it's the same old one as robo's 3820TG?

Thanks ahfung. I'm just reading about all other people's not very successful attempts to achieve 4820TG's stable overclocks. You must have had luck. Perhaps the VGA Bios ver is not that important after all since you have the older one, but the OC is still very good.

    Catalyst 10.8 says:
The following notebooks are not supported in this release:

Any notebook launched after this driver release.
Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel chipsets.
Toshiba notebooks (please check with your notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
Sony VAIO notebooks (please check with your notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)
Panasonic notebooks (please check with your notebook OEM for driver support for these notebooks)

this has a switchable grapgics card right?

That was a hopeful and possible thought.

But I think the reality is just the luck of the draw.
Some overclock better than others, and nothing you can do about it.
    Hope I'm wrong.

BTW, the 4820TG here does cool fine.
Yes, only 1 cooling fan system, compared to 2 in the 3820TG, but it seems to do a great job. Perhaps those with 4820TG cooling issues also had the "bad" luck of the draw. Maybe a little better HS compound and re-seating HSF would cure that for the unlucky few.?

    No.

You can get with 4820TG higher values but it gets to hot while you are gaming with high OC clocks.

It seems to be. Definitely speeds up firing up and opening programs. I went for the 250gb, as some mentioned it being quieter than the 2-platter drives. Also cheaper - but I don't need the space anyway.

    Bought mine off fleabay: 1st_aid_4_laptops

£15ish with postage for a 3810t keyboard. Received it pretty quickly.

Mine was actually a 3-slot cable. Although I'm just sharing one I have for a aspire 5735 at the moment (I'll probably just chop the euro plug and refit eventually). Not sure if it's the same as the 3810t.

if i purchase the i3-370M version is the mobo the same as the other processor versions?,

like i know people have bought different CPU's and put them in the i3 model but how does that fair against say the normal i5/i7 versions like what are the differences internally if any?

posted same question in north america purchase options

There is no functional difference. You can swap out dual core arrandale CPU/IGPUs at will (of course you immediately void your warranty) .

Wow that seems really stupid to me. Still 83C is not terrible but it is a far cry from the 76C that the GPU typically runs at, even under load.
