Grunching but I think you have to switch from switchable to discrete in bios before you can update graphics.

woaaa thats nice mate. Have you tested these clocks in any games or scanned for Arfitacts in Ati Tool?

I ran gpu-z and i have got exact same specs /device id as you so how come i cant get clocks like that to work? maybe its just wasnt tested in game. Im gonna run 3dmark with them to see what happens.

i guess so, tried running these clocks on mine but freezes when trying to run 3dmark06.

Question, ive noticed that with some of my clocks like 670/1045 or 680/1080 games run well good for like 30min sometimes longer and then freeze.

Temps are good for GPU (max 70C) however cpu goes up to 94C and ACPI (mobo?) goes to 90C . Can one of them cause the freeze cause of bad thermal paste or cooling?

What are your ACPI temps guys. Cheers

If it an i3, yes. The i3 goes down with the speed at 95°C.

On the other side, take a look at the windows log for a graphik driver reload.

Hi guys! Been lurking here for quite awhile now, but I finally pulled the trigger and bought a 3820tg from lucomputers. I've also already purchased a core i7 620m from ebay and i'll be placing an order soon for 8GB of ram and a 120GB (or 128 GB) ssd. Any suggestions on good brands for those components?

I'm not too concerned about replacing the hardware, but more so the process of software installation once i've gotten all the new hardware installed. Since I'll be installing a new ssd I'm assuming I'll just have to do a fresh install of win7. Is this possible to do with the acer restore disk or will i have to find another copy of win7 home premium? Also, how much of a pita is it to find and install all the drivers required for all the laptop components? The only reason I ask is because in the past I did a fresh install of winxp on my old toshiba laptop and even after installing what I thought were all the drivers, some of the quick launch buttons still didn't work. I'm essentially hoping to have the laptop in "factory new" condition (minus all the crapware) after all new components have been installed. I hope all that made sense. Thanks for the wealth of information!

Hendricson,RobsTv,Jay.... your 3dMark points are great

What is your bios and graphic driver version? At stock drivers my points was about 9300 at 650/1050; after updating bios to 1,8 and catalist 10.8 I lost 500 point, it is now about 8800... Cpu is unfortunately non o/c able...

    Hey!

My 3820TG has a interesting "feature", its aluminium lid is kinda electro massage device. Sometimes it only buzzes soft on charger, and the feature goes away by plugging it off (comes back when plugged in again) and sometimes completely reverse. Strange, but it didn't bother me anyway.

But this bug makes me able to get a refund from the seller, so whn last week i've figured out my HD5650 is not the best in OC, err... it really sucks in it, and my temps are a bit high, but nothing serious. The AUO(AOU?) panels view angle is not so good too, some colours look great, but sometimes it really shows bad, and an aerobic trainer would be jelous at my KB-s flex; i decided, to return this unit, whit hopes to get a better one.

A few days ago, it started random restarting, sometimes BSOD with some HW error comes before the reset, there was only 2 USB HDD attached, when this happened twice.

To settle out differences, i still wan't another 3820TG, i think it's really cool, for this price it's a present, but i think i got a poor unit, from a poor shipping. I was aware of acer, because i knew this will happen.

The problem is that i didn't clone the factory sys, plugged out the HDD, formatted it (got rid of the 10 gig recovery part too :p ) and put a corsair F60 in it, so before i send it back i have to restore it to factory state. I know there are some fellow-countryman here from Hungary, has anyone got the HUN W7 factory system image? It would be really helpful for me

You can download all of the needed drivers from Acers site, then a clean install of W7 is advised on a new ssd, because of the disks data allignment, and W7-s SSD support. If you want to use your SSD-s full speed, some tweaks will be needed.

I bought this lappy with W7 HP in my native language, so i saved the activation stuff (some files from the factory OS ) and installed a copy of a W7 HP HUN, and re-activated it with the lappys own Serial, and activation files.

The whole process of a new W7 install, with drivers, and some fine tuning takes about 1h (sandforce2 SSD-s are lightning fast!) , and was easy for me, btw it was my first w7 setup, and this is my first w7 lappy.

I've still got mine, and my guess is Kiskapu also. It is a 10GB partition, do you have an FTP to upload to? Probably meet somewhere and copy it?
BTW my lid does the same on charger, but I have no problem with OC or KB at all, so I dont want to risk a swap (maybe later, its good to know I can change it anytime). The AUO panel is realy a cheapo TFT, but I dont know if the LG panel is any better, and probably the replacement unit would still have the AUO, since the 430M is replaced by 460M, and the replacement would be from the remaining stock. Maybe when it's 11 months old along with the battery I'd change all these components.

I'm in Debrecen, but i think i can host a big storage with my 30/20Mbit DIGI net, for uploading that thing. But what can i do with it? I'm sure about creating a factory like recovery partition will be hard (if its even possible), a ghost image, or smtg of the C partiiton, with factory OS would be the easiest way for me to set it back to factory. Or any rescource of that partition, with some instructions to do the backup would be great.

If it's okay i try to host somekind of storage when i get home from work, then anyone can upload a HUN factory image, i will send acc to it.

I'll make a backup with Paragon HD manager 2010, slice it up to RARs (since my upload is slooow), you'll have to copy it to the beginning of the HDD, size doesn't matter as long as it's more than 10GB. After it's in place, it'll work even if the remaining space on the disk is a big empty NTFS partition. There was also a hidden [oem] directory on your C drive, maybe it would be enough to use that. I mean would your retailer mind if you send him an empty HDD? You're swaping because of a HW issue.

has anybody attempted or is it even possibly to swap out the LCD for a better one, like as long as it is the same size?
because i was thinking if i could find one for sell the 1080p 13.3" vaio z lcd would probably be perfect in this machine.

I think it wouldn't work. The ribbon cable is different in Acer and Sony laptops. If there would be a 13.3" acer with higher resolution, and would use the same motherboard, a swap would be possible, but probably would need a BIOS hack.

First, i will ask the dealer, about that, but i think it will be necessarry.

So paragon HD manager simply phisically copies the data part of the disk, then i can copy it to my disk with the complete MBR, and FAT etc? Then if the recovery partitio will be there, i will able to D2D (or what is that) backup the whole factory stuff, and it'll look line it wasn't even started?

Supposedly, yes. You would have the original OS image and all the bloatware present in an otherwise empty partition. I'm not so sure about the never started part, that probably has some more into it. I also don't know if you would get my Win7 preactivation key or yours...

I see. I am a gold partner of acers hungarian retailer, if its possible i will send back with clean HDD. Maybe if that is not enough, a fresh W7 HP activated would do, but if necessarry, i will backup a complete factory state, with my activation certifiations inside, and send it back like that. Just get it swapped, maybe for a better built one. I like this stuff

its i5-450m, yes i did scan for arfitacts and i seem to be having errors at even not that high o/c. I used to be able to game well good on these clocks but now it freezes so it makes me wonder that it might be a heat issue on the CPU or AHCI..

Could be heat or a calculation error at the grafikcard. (Something like 5:0=?, and the zero was generated through an error before.)

Do you show any errors at stock GPU clocks?

I doubt that you are having heat issues with the CPU that would be serious enough to cause throttling. You are not even close to max temps or throttle ranges.

Controller error is unlikely IMO without BSOD events or resetting?

Have you changed anything? Bios? ATI Driver?

Any possibility of damage to the GPU itself. Has heat spiked at all in the past?

Have you considered rolling everything back to see how the unit works on factory settings again?

I would like the PC to start up with bluetooth turned ON.

I see several people have asked about this before, and I've found the following suggestions:

    • Turn bluetooth on, right click on the bluetooth icon, choose open settings, click on the hardware tab and click on properties, click on change settings, click on the power management tab and untick the first option, click ok then apply and your bluetooth should come on automatically when you restart your laptop
      (http://forum.notebookreview.com/6528761-post2582.html)

I've tried both, but the computer still starts up with bluetooth off.
I still have to use Launch Manager, Fn-F3, then use move the cursor (!) and click ON.

Does anyone have a solution that soves this problem?

Is there any way to configure Launch Manager? When I press Fn+Play/Pause I get a list with my DVD drives (physical and virtual). I'm running a clean install of Win 7 so I didn't bother installing it until yesterday when I found out it's a PITA to enable/disable bluetooth without Launch Manager. But I get really annoyed by this DVD list when listening to music. I can pause the music but not resume after pause with Fn+Play/Pause.

Testing and overclocking are two separate things.

Testing = ATITool artifact scanning button
    Overclocking = AMD GPU tool

Come on, most of us cannot even go over 960 for the memory. Guys it's called overclocking. If all of our machines were garanteed to run faster, then it would be called HD 5730 (actually your clocks are faster than 5730).

For the 620m I would recommend Intel, they make the best ones these days :) For SSD go with either Intel G2 160 GB or any Sandforce based one (like Vertex 2, 120 GB). But Crucial C300 is said to be good too.

I only used quality ram in my life, but you can have luck with any cheap one too.

For the factory windows image: do youself a favour, and never even look at it, just put it in a dark place or in a hidden folder and only restore it when it's warranty time. Just install a fresh windows 7 onto the SSD directly (without cloning or imaging), and you will have a nice system in 20 minutes. All the drivers are on the last DVD. Don't install any app, except for the launch manager.

CoD 4 is not a console port! Try overclocking your card, read back, everyone is talking about it.

BTW, 30 fps IS smooth, are you sure it's not that you are experiencing drops or lagging?
