It looks like if I need to upgrade the memory, I need to take off this huge back compartment covering both HD and memory. Is that true? Did I miss anything? Thanks.

I'm attempting to dump the Vbios, can anyone please give me the correct voltage of the 5730 ?

Still it will be nice to flash permanent higher clocks. No need for ATI GPU Tool :)

Not sure if this will help, but seeker_moc over at this thread states that the voltage for 5730s are normally 1.1v (clocks seem to be default at 650/800).

BIOS modding for GPU OC fun and profit!!

Ok rebooted into MsDos promt and used Atiflash -s 0 romname.rom doesn't work. It dumps a vbios that is 0 bytes in size. So far it seems the Vbios cannot be dumped. I also tried via WinFlash and no luck!

The ATI/AMD BIOS for the graphikcard is inside the bios.

The problem is, that the graphikcard BIOS was not included as optionrom.

We need to edit the bios but the phoenix bios editor does work either...

It looks a bit complicated to edit a bios..I'll leave it to someone that knows what he/she is doing!

    The 4820's i3 350M has cooler idle temps (37/35) than my i5 430M (44/48).

Funny that while with the i5 it's always the core 2 that's warmer by 4-5 C, the i3 seems to act the opposite way, core 0 always a bit warmer, not that much though, like 2-3 C.

Just got home, and have some work to do, so no converting comparsion today, maybe tomorrow, with some daytime shots.

Has anyone found out how set the Acer launch manager to have say 3G also disabled by default on start up?

So far every time I start up my PC 3G and Wifi are enabled. While at home I don't need 3G all the time and always have to disable it... There must be a way to set it off by default like bluetooth is.

    Anyone figured this out?

Try setwireless app. Got my BT to load automatically with it and it does have an option to configure 3G.

    You can configure the following:
    SetWireless [/BToff] [/BTon] [/WLANoff] [/WLANon] [/3Goff] [/3Gon].

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I started keeping an eye on discharge levels while on battery (a really addictive habit, BTW), and I have the same experience. Sometimes it just happens that it is stuck at 9-10 W (with Intel card), while a reboot always brings it down to 7-8 W with Wifi on.

Same with reading PDFs with wifi off, sometimes it's stuck at 8-9 W and a reboot brings it down to 5.5-6.5 W.

I'm looking to join this family very soon. Going to pick up the 3820tg (HD5470) as a nice multimedia notebook to complement my aging ASUS Z70Va.

It seems like the first thing I need is a SSD for this awesome machine since I will be doing some photo editing with photoshop and lightroom.

At least we can get back to normal on a reboot, however annoying that is. I would love to see Acer release a new driver pack for the intel/ati combo, though I don't really count on it, pity.

If you can afford it and don't need the space of a HDD, definitely get yourself a SSD. Might as well go for the 5650 version while your at it ;)

But what's the point of the regestry-settings to LM?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Dritek\LManager

Is there any alternative to the crappy Dritek LM to make the Fn-keys work?

I'll drop a SSD in it for sure but for the 5650...its a tad bit more expensive here and for the savings, it'll go towards a better SSD and I won't be gaming with it so the 5650 won't be useful :p

I went to try and clean something stuck under a key, lifted the key up, and now I cant get it to stick back in again.

The key is currently attached at its top to a black circular connector thing, which itself is connected to the keyboard at the bottom. Im not sure if I have broken anything.... could upload a picture later. Just wondering if there is a method for getting the key back in propely, because i feel like ive tried to jiggle it back in every which way. Maybe I would have to take the whole keyboard out?

Thanks, Installed it and it installed to program files/setwireless. No idea how to run this, is it via CMD promt? I click the exe and it runs a cmd which flashes for a second.

Doesn't seem to work or install correctly?

Edit: Right ok, its run via the Task Scheduler. I'll see if I can get it set up.

Just ordered myself an Intel 6200 wifi card. For some reason I've been getting terrible signal in some areas with the Atheros card that's built in, compared to other people in the same area who connect fine.

    Hey guys,

Just got my 3820TG last night. So far so good, seems solid. Clean install w7 pro x64 with drivers from the Drivers and Utilities DVD (Burned from the original image).

Two quick comments. I've got the AUO322 screen, and do notice a fair bit of grainyness. Quite dissapointed with that.

Also, can't help but try to OC this puppy, but the AMD GPU says it 'Can't find a valid device', and yes, I am running on the ATI card at the moment. Anyone ever seen this behavior?

    Thanks.

just wanted to put this out that the following sleeve:

    http://www.recoupit.com/Laptop-Components/Cases/Tuari/tc80637/

is a perfect fit, with no extra jiggle room for the laptop to shift around in... cheap, thick neoprene padding, kind of like it was custom made for the 3820tg. I got it for the price above at Targets recently as there was a special 30% off discount on them.

I have a question for people who are using Hybrid SSD drives like Seagate Momentus XT. I know it works by copying frequently used files to its cache, but is only 4 GB of SSD cache enough?

I mean that won't even hold enough files in cache to load Windows 7 fast, let alone other frequently used programs. If you use other programs a lot, it will clean Windows files out of the SSD to make room, so windows will start booting slow again, just like other cheaper drives. Am I missing something here?

I think what we really need is two drives in a single 2.5 HDD case, one 32 GB SSD, other 500 GB 7200 RPM drive. The laptop will recognize it as two separate partitions. SSD will be for Windows and programs, normal drive for the rest. I can achieve that with a USB drive I know, but I hate carrying hard disks around.

Conversions were made with Total Video Converter, AFAIK it does not use the GPU.

Note that the sample 3820TG came in the first wave, and that the i3s may run cooler than the i5s.

It seems to me that the i3 runs relatively cooler during everyday usage, idling at 36/35 C, while the 430M idles at 43/48 C, this flips when it comes to gaming.
The heat comparsion is not fair, since were talking about an i3 and an i5 unit.

I think the 4820's cooling wouldn't do "this well" compared to the dual cooling during gaming, I believe I've read 4820TG users reporting higher gaming temps than 3820TG users have experienced.

Also note this i3 dosen't seem the experience the i5s (at least the 430M's) "heat phenomenon", the cores of the i3 show little to none difference in heat (and mainly the core 0 is the hotter), while the 430M's core 0 is always coller than core 2 by at least 5 C.

Has the 3820TG been discontinued? Showing as out of stock everywhere (I'm in the UK BTW).
First I wanted an envy 14 then they took away the Radiance screen, so I decided on the 3820TG with an HD 5650 and it seems to be unavailable anywhere. Does no one want my money?

I personally think the momentus xt is great...windows and applications load really fast! I can load programs faster than a friend who has a i7-620m and a standard 7200rpm drive...it is quite noisy in a quiet environment...like a fan

I would advise you to read Anand Lal Shimpis review of the Momentus, he has a huge knowledge on the area. However, I have often heard/read people saying that it's noise level is fairly high for a 7200 rpm disk. Theres no doubt though, that a real SSD combined with a spacious HDD would be ideal :)

    Hello Everyone,

I formated my 5820TG, installed my own Windows 7 Pro and the newest version of every driver, but unfortunately my windows boot up time got much worse :(

Can anyone give me tips on that ?

    Thanks!

Just to make sure I'm up to date. Is the ATI driver v8.713.3.3000 the latest 'functional' driver for the 3820TG?

Update....Now using firefox and that split second black screen is now rare compared to internet explorer when it was happening all the time. Opening files and folders also creates this split second black screen.

Any idea what might be happening?

That probably depends on who you ask, some people seems to have success on installing newer ATI drivers. However, the driver you mentioned are the latest driver provided by Acer, and therefor the latest driver guaranteed to work on the 3820tg.

    Hey guys,

Found a great little app I thought I'd share with fellow 3820 owners.

    Aerofoil 1.5.1
This utility runs in the background and will automatically change your power plan depending on your power source, a feature that MS left out of Windows 7. Basically, when on AC it will set you on High Performance, and Power Saver when on battery (both are configurable if needed). It also has a couple other features, such as auto-muting of speakers and such.

It is freeware, so go nuts. For the more advanced, you can download the source and compile it yourself if wanted.

    Link: http://silentdevelopment.blogspot.com/2010/05/aerofoil-151-released.html

    Enjoy :)

    Marc
