Rather than have all the info spread over pages of the massive 3820TG thread, I have decided to place all my info I'm gather on my new i5 580m QS upgrade. This way users interested in upgrading to a i5 580 can find interesting info all in one place.
How to replace the default CPU with a i5 580m.
Instructions are here in this PDF guide on how to swap the CPU. Its recommend you only attempt this if you've done something like this before.
Overclocking the i5 580m
Using setfsb by Abo, and the clockgen G73jh you can set the baseclock speed over the default 133Mhz. Maxium overclock speeds all depend on your CPU and RAM. Run a stress test like prime95 for a few hours to make sure your overclock is stable and the temps are not to high. Over 90 degrees I would check your thermal paste.
My overclocking results and temperatures:
My i5 580 QS overclocks to 152 BLCK max, as expected its less BLCK than my i5 450m, higher default multipliers = less overclocking room..
Still I managed to reach 3.8Ghz, not a bad boost![]()

Over 2 hours of prime95 stressing on my new i5 580m. I'm impressed. While it maxes at 85 degrees. This was before the max fan speed kicks in. Once its running the fan at full it ranged from 79-82 degrees running prime95. Its about 7 degrees cooler my i5 450m. My thermal paste is IC Diamond 7.
I've also seen idle speeds as low as 36 degrees![]()

This CPU consumes less than my i5 450 it seems. I never got near 8 watts on my i5 450m... As low as 6.5 watts is well nuttsWill come in handy.

Hi Hendrickson.
Maybe it will be possible, other processors such as a i7 (socket LGA 1156) in the 3820TG to build one?
