Any clue on whether switchable graphics will make a return? If so, what's the dedicated card? nVidia/ATI?

Anyone want to venture an estimate on the price of the 14", i5, 6550 or 6650? Would it still be $800 or less?

Also, if someone has the 4820TG, would it be possible to replace the i5 in the 4820TG with the new i5? Here's a quick comparison of the two CPUs from intel.

    Compare Intel® Products,

    Would this yield any improvement?

Right as I was about to pick up a refreshed 3820tg.

Now I may decide to wait... though who knows when it will eventually make it to Canada (if ever.)

I don't have to worry about these new 3820tg's, since the graphic cards they'll have will virtually be the same as the current ones.

Would be a significant boost I'd say, but won't change the gaming performance by any stretch of imagination since the 5650 / 6550 are wayy behind in power than the i5's and are thus bottlenecks. For all other raw processing power tasks (encoding etc) it'll be two-digit percentage faster afaik (if new i5 SBs are boosted as much as new i7 SBs).

The main attraction is the USB 3.0 and new keyboards, the new chassis would be interesting too.

Also do you guys think I should wait if I only want something without dedicated graphics? The Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3820T-6480 is going for like $600 on Amazon

    dang it

just when I wanted to get a 3820TG at the end of the month for my birthday

a more powerful SB based CPU would help me in Solidworks do you reckon?
should I get the current Arrandsdale based 3820TG at the end of the month or when the SB refresh comes?

I would like a 900p screen option. On the 13" MBA it is really nice.

    I'll be getting a 6650 model with i7-2720QM. Hopefully 13" but 14" is OK.

I have high hope for the 6650! Hopefully it will come with 8 GB RAM and a 128 GB SSD.

The 17" Ethos is the only Ethos model that I have played with. It was awesome.

Thanks OP. I am quite pumped!

An i7-2720QM with Radeon 6650 with switchable graphics? Can I hope for this combination?

I can't imagine Acer putting a quad core and dedicated graphics into a 13'', so I'm going to put my hope on the 14'' or 15''.

Oh no! It's all standard voltage CPUs! Would a LV helped in battery life in low-usage scenarios? Or maybe even an ULV?
Can't wait till it comes out!

crunching performance will be better but not terribly different.

systems with dedicated cards like the 6550 won't even bother with the improvement in integrated graphics in Sandy Bridge.

unless you getting one without an ATi card, the USB3.0 as the only main selling point to hold off a purchase and wait for these to come.

who knows wheeeen they will be coming anyway and in what config right?

not to mention the Intel issue with their chipset recall is sure going to delay this. their fixed chipsets are going to ship only at end of Feb.

You could've also gotten the new ones with a 6550 for ~ $200 more if you're in Canada.

For those who don't do a lot of videogaming on the 3820TG, $200 is not worth the GPU upgrade.

    Well I'm sure for 600 he probably got a i3 version..that $200 also bumps that measly i3-370/380 to a i5-480.

Also for people who only do heavy multimedia watching, a dedicated GPU isn't required. The HD 200 should be enough for 1080p H.264 or 720p Flash.

Actually I've been thinking about what I mentioned a couple of posts back seriously. Current reviews put conservative power at 10W for the quads out right now, will the ULVs improve battery life? The i7 2657M is enough for my CPU needs, and if I can successfully achieve my golden 8+ hour mark, then I'll be a very happy Canadian. :D

It will be much better if you take into account the performance gains of the quad cores, the i7 2630qm has about the same performance of the venerable i7 940xm. The thing is that the latter can be overclocked to your hearts content, but also the i7 2920xm so yeah the improvement is there.

Yes the performance difference is there. The 4650 with a i7 720qm have the same performance as the 5650. Yes the upgrade is there, but it wont be as noticeable as the performance increase of the 3650 to the 4600 series, the 6600 series is about the performance of the 5700, sometimes the 5750 to the fabbled 5770.

The SB corrected chipsets with the b3 and b4 stepping are going to be produced by feb, yes this is correct. The thing is that everyone is planning their new releases to april and later, the expected normalization of the production is march, so the building of stock and all that, leads to a credible april and may release. The lenovos are all pushed to spring release due to the SB issue, including the very tasty thinkpad edge e420s, which would be a direct competitor to the acer 4830tg.

I'm really looking forward to the 3830, I'm tired of my 1810 and the SU4100. I don't play games, but the cpu is too slow for CS5 and LR3 (photo editing). Yeah I know 11" is not ideal for photo editing, but I have another machine for more serious photo work :)

What do you think the battery life will be, considering the new timelines won't be using ULV?

    I could've, but I couldn't justify spending $200 on a better GPU when I can spend it to upgrade my desktop's 9600GT to a GTS 450 or GTX 460.

    This is my specs:

    Intel Core i5-460M
    ATI 5470
    4GB DDR3
WD Blue 500GB, which I upgraded to a WD Blue 640GB

Oic, well it's still a slight CPU upgrade. In the end $200 is a lot for some and a little for others, circumstances and necessities are what determine whether or not it's worth the upgrade.

Makes the whole lineup, maybe except for the 3830, instantly garbage to me. Low dpi screens should only be reserved for the elderly, like the simple cellphones with giant screens and buttons they sell.

I dunno about these new ones coming out. The current line of 3820TG will run out of stock soon and I think the replacements will def be a lot more expensive. Get those orders in on the current line while they're still dirt cheap.

If it really is 1366x768 for 15" then it's garbage yes, but I just can't see Acer doing this?

I hardly see the dpi of the screen as an issue. The quality of it however is a problem.

The problem with acers and others is the low gamut and the low contrast of the screens.

To have a high resolution screen in a small format laptop would invariably lead to a increase in the dpi in windows, thus rendering the larger work space less useful, and the problem of scaling in other programs. The other problem is that it lacks the proper performance to deal with the higher res in games. I like to play high on my games at least, and I use a 4670m GDDR3 to do so, If I connect to a 1920*1080 screen that instantly goes to medium if I want to be able to play at all.

So higher dpi screens in such a format for me is a terrible move, maybe a 1600*900 in a 15'' would be a good idea, but something higher than that would inevitably be too small for me.

If acer can develop the new timelinex with the ethos design, it would be great, if this happens the current run ups in my intent of purchase list would increase.

PS: if the build quality improves off course, i have suffered from poor build quality for 2 years and I wont take it anymore
    @MahirAydin
the sony vaio SA might be the one you are looking for, it has a 1600*900 screnn, if it is the quality or the premium one we are unable to discern atm

6650m is a Turks part, just like the oem desktop cards announced today.

It will be closer to a 5830 than a 5730.

Very nice if they can squeeze it and a quad into the 3830tg.

if that is true, Im liking this model already. The 6630 appears to be too close to the 4670m that I have, and given the lack of major improvement with the 5650 and the 5700, this is extremely good news.

How would it be too close? It has 50% more SP, HD4670M (320SP) HD6630 (480SP)..

the measurement was based on the 5650, which has the same performance of the 4670. Indeed the SP is much higher

    opinions?
should I get a new SB based TimelineX or the current 3820TG?
I'm thinking of holding out if the effiecency/performance of the SB refresh would be faster than the current 3820TG for AutoCAD/Solidworks programs

There shouldn't be much difference in normal usage, Sandy Bridge should be a bit better in CAD. AFAIK only the newer versions of ACAD (or was it Maya) that can use OpenCL. Wait if you can, get one now if you can't.
