What Kinda 3d mark 06 can we see on the 3830?

And anyone know if the 540m is going to be a good overclocker?

Isnt it possible to get the Igp and Gpu to work together kinda like crossfire and sli??

That Would Be a Good increase !

the gt 540m is a gt 425m/gt 435m overclocked. Both chips were pretty great at ocing, but I wont buy ANYTHING with such poor performance thinking hey I can oc this and get the good performance that I wanted.

Based on here, Google Translate its plastic...

Don't think nVidia/Intel would cooperate at that level...
And the iGPU would just hinder the dGPU performances...

The IGP would just hinder performance by eating memory bandwidth.

Even if you went the whole hog and went the lucid hydra route, like I said, it would hurt performance.

Is it even confirmed there will be "TG" variants of these models? So far they talk about 3830T and 4830T, but I don't see a G.

The flex on the lid of my 4820TG is about the same, as is the flex on the lid of my IBM Thinkpad T42. And my old SL400. And my eMachine D620. In fact the only lid that doesn't flex like that is the lid on my Ideapad S10. Which is the only one that light pressure causes the LCD to have display anomalies.

Damned near all laptops flex like that.

Interestingly, the flex he sees in the touchpad and right side are again about the same as my old T42. In fact, the right side above the DVD drive was more flexible and eventually just broke right off. My screen on my 4820TG and thinkpad T42 flex about as much torsionally as well. Honestly, no one tries these things on most laptops because they ALL freaking do it.

I still think Acer could make a fortune out of an afordable gaming notebook.

That is, one specifically designed for it.

I'd gladly have paid $1100 or so for my 4820TG if it would have come with a high contrast 1600x900, preferably matte screen. Or the Asus equivalent like the N82JV or U41JF with said screen.

Are better screens really exponentially more expensive for laptop manufacturers to get and install into their new lines? Why can't brands like Acer realize that specs vs price battle is futile because of HP's consumer line presence, and that they can only gain an edge from a better screen?

The incremental cost of 1600x900 is pretty small. I'd bet the cost of supply line complexity is higher than the difference in cost between 1366x768 and 1600x900 screens. I just ordered a 1600x900 screen that I'm gonna try to get to work for $97 delivered. I'll keep everyone informed on my progress when it shows up.

I think another reason is a the higher resolution panels are supplied by Samsung, and all the Taiwanese manufacturers are in one way or another boycotting Samsung for the way they're doing business. From what I've read, they would supply a part to a manufacturer, and if they find out it makes money, they develop their own product to compete and cut off their supplies to the competitor. Cell phones are a good example..

The one I just ordered was an LG. Btu I could see how if Samsung made most of them and then stopped, the supply might dry up.

Are Samsung screens visibly better than, say, equivalent AUO screens then?

I've been wanting to swap out my AUO screen ever since I bought my 5820TG (it's dim as hell even on max brightness, and colors are not vibrant at all), and have done research and know which two LG / Samsung screens are interchangeable.

Yes, I know that SONY makes their own High Resolution LED Panels hence they are expensive.
And HP specs vs price is less value for money that what Acer offers.

Is it assumed that since it's a GT540M that there will be optimus? Performance wise, I believe the GT540M has lower GFLOPs compared to 6650HD according to wikipedia. Then again, notebookcheck claims that the nVidia is faster...?

No, there's a newer GPU called the 6650 which is basically the 6550 with higher clock rates and more shaders. It's available right now in a $579 Acer 5552G on amazon. I believe that originally the 4830TG series were slated for the 6650 GPU.

It says that the new Timelines will span from 13" up. What about the 1830T? I can't think of a notebook in the Acer lineup that will benefit more from the inclusion of a Sandybridge CPU and its more powerful graphics. The 18(4)0t should come with an I5-UM SB and HD 3000 graphics. That would make it more powerful than the Asus UL30JT, which has a dedicated GPU.

Release in April. If you recall, the 3820TG was released in April but weren't really available until May and here in the US, not until June. Hopefully, the refresh won't take as long this time. I wonder if we will see the 3830TG in the US this time. No matter, however, since my 3820TG serves me well still and I have no plan to upgrade it ATM.

I tried to read through the whole post but I only made it half way so if this was asked before you know why ;)

I have been waiting for months for this refresh since they did a slight refresh late last year but left out USB 3.0. Now I am worried about the built-in battery. Beyond the why did they do this to us, can the battery be user replaced? I think I am willing to suck the battery up for Sandy Bridge + USB 3.0 if I can take out some screwdrivers and without a complete tear down replace the battery in 4 years.

It's hard to tell from pictures, but I think the battery can be replaced by removing the screws securing the panel covering it. Regardless, by the time the 4830TG turns 4, you'll probably have moved on to bigger and better systems. Disassembling the current generation TimelineX is actually not too difficult. Just take usual precautions about static electricity and google for instructions.

Not really news, but from what I've read so far from the Acer Twitter in China, 4830 will have Nvidia GT 540M with a choice of either 1GB or 2 GB DDR3 Video Ram, available in i3/i5/i7 although availability of i7 will be limited. Resolution the same at 1366 x 768 and HDD of 500GB or 750GB. USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0. Retails around RMB 6799 which is about USD1000. Expected delivery date of 4/10.

This is for the China market so may vary I guess.

This is so exciting, I looked around and (google) translated some korean sites. The 3830TG with these specs should be 'round $900(USD):

    -i5-2410M (2.3GHz)
    -13.3 inches 1366x768
    -640GB (5400rpm)
    4GB DDR3 RAM (up to 8)
    -64-bit 7 Home Premium
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 1GB memory
    -1.8Kg (3.9lbs)
    -6cell (9 hours)
    -1Gbps wired LAN
    -802.11n wireless LAN
    -HDMI/VGA
    -Webcam "High Definition"
    -Bluetooth 3.0
    - USB 2.0 x3 (3.0 blank) (hopefully that's an error)
    -In (5 in 1, SD / MMC / MS / MS Pro / xD)

    Edit:
i5-2410m 2.3ghz-2.9ghz version will be 'round 'bout $894
    i5-2520m 2.5ghz-3.2ghz version $1,063
    i7-2620m 2.7ghz-3.40ghz version $1,192

*Key differences between the models (other than processor)*
    - i5-2520m and i7-2620m have 2GB Graphics memory instead of 1GB
    - i7-2620m version has 750GB 5400rpm HDD instead of 640GB 5400rpm HDD

There wont be a factory backlit keyboard on this unit and i doubt that there is an aftermarket unit to use in a mod like we did with our 3820tg's. Another reason to like my unit over the refresh.

The SA looks like the real competition for the Acer. It should have an ATI HD 6630 gpu, far better 300 nit 1600 x 900 display and backlit display but will probably cost $400 - $500 more than the Acer. It will also be available in the US.

I dont like the barrel hinge of the new Acer, the Nvidia gpu or the internal battery. Still, paying 50% more for the Sony is a tough choice. The only thing on the refresh I would like is USB 3.0.

Damn that sucks. I was really hoping for a backlit keyboard. The only problem with the sony is that I am unable to get i5 with the ATI 6630 GPU which would make cost around $1000 and if the sony is only $100 more than the Acer I would definitely buy the Sony over it. However on the US Sony site it requires the i7 which is a $250 upgrade making the SB cost $1300 instead of $100 which is ridiculous. So at the moment its the debate between the i5 Acer and i7 Sony SB.

One thing I've never understood is having two batteries and swapping. Is it not inconvenient having to charge one, take it out, charge another? How is it better to have 10 hours on two batteries (3820tg), rather than 9 hours on one battery (3830tg)?

It's quite obvious they did that on purpose. The i5 version would be the most logical as the processing power is more than enough for most people. There's gotta be a gap (ie. MacBook Pro Sandy 13", the drastically more expensive 15" wouldn't sell so well if the 13" had comparable dedicated graphics).

Actually IMO the barrel hinge is way stronger (stiffer) than the current hinge.
My current laptop has a barrel hinge which is very stiff.
It won't get loose over time as well no matter how much you slam the lid...

All this talk about the SB made me go back and look at it again. I was originally under the impression that the SB would only have the 6470 and the 6630 would be reserved for the SA. At this price point though, I think I'll probably go with the SB then with a 6630, and replace the main HDD for a Momentus XT and probably swap out the Optical Drive for another HDD.

They are probably functionally better, I just don't like the look of them. The Hinges on my 3820TG are plenty strong. I've had this unit since September and I have no play in the hinges at all. The longer I own this unit, the more I like it.

@Deltido - I guess it depends on how often you use your batteries. The 9 Cell on the Acer is really inconvenient, doesn't fit very well in a sleeve and ruins the portability of the unit. Although I use batteries a lot, I rarely need more than 5 hours. I take a second battery along only on extended trips. Any inconvenience of swapping and charging 2 batteries far outweighs the inconvenience of having to transport the 3820TG outfitted with a 9 cell. Oh, and did it say it is really ugly? Part of the reason I bought the Acer is its sleek look which is impressive in a conference room or board room. The 9 cell ruins that sleekness.
