The dual cooling of the 3820TG is genious in the way that the computer is always cool, no matter how much you push it.
The only advantages I see with the 3830G is keyboard (definitively), and maybe the USB 3.0 port if you need it, and slight performance gain from new CPU/GPU. Still the HD5650/6650 cards in 3820TG overclocks quite nice and easily -
Sony Canada have the S 'VPC-SB190S' configured as below at $999
Intel® Core™ i5-2410M processor (2.30GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.90GHz
Microsoft Windows® 7 Home Premium
Windows 7 64 Preinstalled
Black
Keyboard
Keyboard Backlight
4GB (4GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
500GB Hard Disk Drive (5400rpm)
CD/DVD Player / Burner
AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M (1GB VRAM) hybrid graphics with Intel® Wireless Display technology
13.3" VAIO Display with LED backlight (1366 x 768)
so, backlit KB, 6630 and presumably a better screen than Acer ableit still 768vert. -
If you enter in eCoupon: SPRING200 you save another $200 off of that. In addition, the upgrade to the Intel® Core™ i5-2540M processor is 0 dollars, so I would get that as well.
In total, $799 for a SB notebook with a decent GPU and a pretty good CPU. You could pay $50 more and get a BR burner as well if you wanted. That is pretty high quality for that price. Definitely giving the 3830TG a run for its money, especially if the 6630 is as highly OC-able as the 5650 and 6550 were. -

Nice.. still no 13/14" SB aptops on the horizon with 16:9 though?

i get this error
The following coupons are not applicable for this order: SPRING200 -

I plan on buying a laptop in the near future and can't decide on:
a) Buying the Acer 3820TG now (can find it for around 730 plus tax/shipping)
b) buying the Sony SB190s (if this coupon code works its 700 plus tax/shipping)
c) waiting for he 3830 to be released in canada
Any opinions on my dilemma?
For reference I am looking for a portable laptop with good battery life, and I can do some decent gaming on. 800 before tax is the budget so these seem to fit the bill. -

Agreed, Bronsky. I have been hoping to hear something about a SB refresh for the 11" Acer lineup. So far, I haven't been able to find anything. I'm not sure I want to go for a 13" so here's to more hoping... -

I wonder what effect the earthquakes in Japan are going to have on the SB and SA production?

Do intel have FABs in Japan?

I thought that Sony still produced its units in Japan (I meant the 13" SA and SB models).

I am also leary about buying units that have not been reviewed. Some manufacturers, like HP and Sony, sometimes nerf the parts they install and prevent them from performing as well as they can. The GPU in the Envy 14 and Sony Z-13 come to mind. Acer doesn't install burdensome bios controls that prevent their components from performing to their capacity.
I would wait to see the reviews. Maybe someone at Sony Style Canada can tell you how long the coupon will last.

My favorite SB refresh so far is the Lenovo X220. The IPS panel looks great and the IGPU scores in the 4,000 marks range in 3DM06. It also has an mPCIe slot, so external graphics is a possibililty via a V-Dock. If I was looking to replace my 3820TG, I would have to consider the Lenovo. Luckiliy, my 3820TG is performing perfectly and I see no reason to replace it this year. -
"The IPS panel looks great"
IPS at 1366x768?
Whats the point in using IPS at this resolution?
Isn't IPS better for colour reproduction and viewing angles?
So, IPS better for photo editing type work... yet at 1366x768, photoshop will be a pain in the backside. -
But, the only real editing we do here is video editing. We have to cut and splice Aerial images to demonstrate the spread of contaminants or use of a certain property over time or to edit video depositions.
The proper color rendering plus the better viewing angles would be a nice feature to have on a primary notebook. The Aerial image colors are important in infrared images.

Sure, in your application that sounds ideal for you, but as a business ultraportable for the 'suit on the go' emailing and editing excel spreadsheets, colour reproduction isn't that important and the reduction of workspace area would surely be a hinderance?
Most spreadsheets I've worked with are longer than they are wide.
I can understand the 16:10 (**oops 16:9 edit) trend for consumer level laptops where watching films is the main use.. but then I think I'd end up being frustrated by a low res screen where I have to scroll vertically LOTS more than I'd like when browsing the web. Infact, I cant think of an application where 1366*768 would be better than 16:9, or my desktops superb 8:5 1920*1200 resolution.
Anyhow, I guess I'll have to adapt as I don't see it changing anytime soon -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
Some minor corrections:
1366*768 is 16:9
There are basically no more 16:10 notebooks, with the exception of apple.
yes 16:10 is better for excel work.
1920*1200 is 16:10
The IPS matte screen is better, since you can use it anywhere you want, the reproduction albeit not that relevant, for some professionals its a good option.
If you want the sony vaio Z comes with a 1920*1080 screen, I do find that to be a little too much, and I do coding, hence I need more vertical space. -
1366*768 is 16:9 - Thanks.. sorry. . too many numbers going around in my head
8:5 = 16:10 - oops missed that -

absolutely right.. that'll teach me to read off Wikipedias resolutions cheat sheet.

In regards to that Sony Vaio SB deal in Canada, my girlfriends order (which I did for her) was cancelled. I talked to them over the phone and they told me that the website was being tested and it would be officially available on Monday, March 21 alongside the Vaio CA and CB.
-
do you know if that $200 deal for the SB be available on monday 21st when they launch?
-
IPS is most valuable for its great viewing angles. In terms of color reproduction, brightness and contrast there are some TN screens that match IPS (like the TN screen on the sony Z.) But IPS is the only way to go if you need a wide viewing angle.
12" enterprise laptops are often used in sales. for example, pharmaceutic reps typically use X201's to give one on one presentations at physician offices. For that type of setting having a wide viewing angle really helps. -
Reply from Sony Canada regarding the fact that the order wont work.

Or.. take a flyer and get it anyway as it looks a far better value machine than the 3830TG is likely to be... whenever it appears. -

How did this become a Sony discussion though? -
Really on the fence for this, $800 even without the extra battery, and the upgraded CPU is still a great deal -

for people looking to buy the vaio SB, it was pulled from their site just now. Bad news for canada.
Or maybe good news, since that the market there is probably smaller, you guys will be served first
EDIT: FALSE ALARM THEY ARE BACK ONLINE
so aside that any news for a lonely hopeful that the 3830tg will have an AMD card? -
NomisR has a point- please keep in on topic.
-
Hopefully future reviews for this thing will not all point to heat issues and bad screens. -
3830 - meh -
i found some video preview may this interrupt the silence

i look at the viao sb specs comes with a 6470m but only has 64mb bus would that affect it graphics performance?
-
i'd like to compare with what i have -
With regards to the Sony discussion... please keep it on topic. The mods have already mentioned about that earlier. I don't want this thread to be shut down. I'm still looking forward to the 4830TG if it offers Optimus. Load temps for the new TimelineX will probably be around what current generation ones are getting. The question is, will the Sandy Bridge throttle like the Arrandale i3s did?
-
i think load temps will be like the 4820 and nothing like the 3820 with its dual fan/heatsink design.
