Seems fine to me. Mine usually goes up to 90+°, but I guess the cpu you speak about is an i3 ?
Makes me think I've attached gpu first, then cpu.
Next time I'll try the other way around..
-
-
It is the I5, it should be running at 2.X Ghz
-
see through the thread, you need throttlestop.
it is usually the gpu temp which makes cpu throttle. -
To follow up on the debate as to whether or not you can use an ES processor with this notebook, I have been assured by an eBay seller that the i5-2520M ES Q17N does in fact work with no issues in this notebook, and that a few users have upgraded their 3830TG with no problems.
For someone with an i3 struggling with the 85C limit, this would make a nice upgrade. Given the compatibility of the Q17N ES, I'd be willing to bet the other ES dual cores are in fact compatible. -
what temps are you getting? are you using multipliers with TS?
everything stable so far? -
To anyone else with a 3830tg - how much power is your system taking at 25% brightness, wifi on, cpu idle with power save on? I get 13.7W from throttlestop. Just want to see what everyone else is getting.
-
I don't know why, it doesn't display using batterycare right now.
Maybe because I messed with EC..... Does someone know if I can get it back to defaults via BIOS (re)flashing ?
But on a 4830tg (so 14"), I'm getting around 7W discharge rate under the conditions you stated.
ps: you'd have to choose between 20% & 30% for the screen, you can't put it @25%
edit: just noticed you said "using throttlestop". I believe it will only tell you your cpu consumption (mine is 3-4W), so your whole power drainage is even higher ! -
just opened the back cover to switch wifi antenna cables, thought it might make a difference since I had difficulties with wifi when on eco mode: didn't make any change..
But now batterycare is displaying my battery discharge rate again (could simply be the reboot that cured it), BUT my battery percentage dropped instantly from ~90% (before I opened) to 20% when I powered on after the operation.... really strange !!
Question to 2nd HDD via optical bay users :
Does yours work fine ?
I can hear mine stops/restart every few seconds on a regular basis, dunno why, maybe my bay isn't working that well :-/
edit: Maybe this is a power saving feature from acer, which is originally aiming at the optical drive ?
Any idea how to test this ? -
What games would cause the 3830tg to throttle.. I havent experienced any of it and I want to test this throttling thing.
-
try any modern games like left 4 dead etc with gpu enabled, your temps will easily climb up with turbo on and eventually it will downclock to 1200 mhz your frames will slow down dramatically... that's why you gotta use throttlestop to stop this from happening, get yarself a notebook cooler and your life would be saved
.
-
Left4Dead might be too old, better try Crysis 2, Duke Nukem Forever or Aion at max settings.
-
Hi guys. I've had my 4830tg for months now and i'm loving it. now i want to upgrade my RAM. right now i'm at 3GB. may i ask what specific kind of ram i should purchase and what the optimal capacity is? should i max everything at 8gb or would it be too much?
-
Well they replaced the battery, but that's it. They didn't say if it was panasonic or sanyo.
Now I get to take it apart and redo the thermal paste/heatsink to make sure that isn't the problem. I paid someone to do the thermal paste last time, any tips on doing it? Better to add too much or too little? -
So does these temp fluctuations look like thermal pasting done poorly to you?
If not what else could cause this? It never used to happen (even after repasting for the first week). Nothing changed that I know of, maybe the thermal paste cured in a less than optimal form or something.HTML:[TABLE] 09/07/11 14:38:01 22.88 27.2 100.0 100.0 -59496 78 69 1.0758 12.8 09/07/11 14:38:03 I think you should.
6gb should be fine, but you'll cut the price by only 10e maybe, so it's worth to see further and go for 8gb. -
im using 8GB of ram
specially useful to unpack/decompressed highly compressed files such as REPACK PC games.
da highest usage i got wat around 7.5GB
-
thanks for the reply! now i'm definitely upgrading. but i need to know what kind of ram i should purchase. i'm not too familiar with ram specifications.

Hi, I own Acer Aspire 3830TG and I love it too
I previously owned 5830tg but due to frequent traveling, I traded 5830tg for LENOVO e420(2x) but this lenovo e420 is very bad notebook(bad design, jarring and bad keyboard;first piece I have complained because of a bad keyboard and second piece weird clicked and had a creaky chassis) so I change lenovo for ASUS U41SV(but this has horrible performance only i3 but with 540m, and heavier than I thought) so I again change for 3830tg and now I am happy.
My specification now are: i5-2410m, 8GB DDR3 Samsung (with four jedec speed), WB Black 750GB,..
I bought better hdd, better wifi(intel with wifi and wifimax), and second ram and I am very happy man too

may i know the frequency of the ddr3 ram you purchased? stores in here keep telling me that they don't have the ram for my laptop, saying that mine is 1066 and they only have 1333.
-
may i ask how you have 2 hds with the laptop?
there's no caddy space, so what's the optimal solution to running a ssd+hd? -
YEAH ES, got a Sanyo battery. No problems at all with the thermal paste or heat sink, had it looked at today. Not that I even have time to play games anyway anymore.
-
bulldozer_fusion Notebook Enthusiast
acer send u back your laptop with a Sanyo battery?
hope for me too,i send my laptop this monday to acer to change the battery & they sent me an email today That my laptop's ready to send me back
finger crossed -
Yup. Unfortunately just had my first hard freeze and I've been having weird problems where my nvidia card would refuse to run, instead only using integrated graphics. Hopefully they're not going to come up again...
Alright why is my fan on full-blast all the time, even when on battery/powersmart mode? -
I have a few questions about upgrading to a 7200rpm hdd in my 3830tg:
My start up time now is about 61 seconds, how much should it go down with a 7200rpm?
Is the performance difference noticeable?
I have a few games that I paid for like BC2 and CS: Source how do I transfer them over? Do I just download them through Steam?
Is it worth it?
Thanks guys, if anyone can just give their quick input I'll appreciate it. -
-
i wouldnt bother upgrading from 5400rpm to 7200rpm.
waste of money if you ask me. the difference is not big enough to justify the cost. upgrading to a ssd however!. -
I beg to differ. 7200rpm drive is at least 30% faster than a 5400rpm drive and is very affordable whereas SSD of a decent capacity costs as much as a notebook. I wouldn't buy an SSD even if I had money to spare- not at current prices.
-
Is powersmart mode the same as Power Saver?
Also, I only get about 5:45 hours on battery. With wifi on the whole time and just browsing internet.
Anyone else find the keyboard spacebar sucks? It doesn't register my presses a lot of times.
Is it me or does the sound from the headphone jack suck hardcore?? The speakers are fine, but my gosh, the headphone jack is like all echo and you mostly hear feedback and barely any audio. It sounds like I'm listening to sound underwater.
Using 5830T -
Considering that you use the WIFI, the CPU and the HD3000 graphics to surf the web these days, your 5:45 sounds just about right. Bluetooth radio shut off? You using a mouse? Display setting?
-
I've used the stock hard drive and gamed with it. Games showed stuttering issues with the stock hard drive, I replaced it with my 7200rpm hitachi hdd and my games don't skip anymore (besides having a more responsive OS too), the boost may not be as fast as a SSD but it is noticeable. They should stop making 5400rpm hdds as their faster counterparts consume virtually the same amount of power.
-
Some people believe that 5400 rpm drives are quieter. I can't tell the difference since they only last in my notebooks long enough to get the back open and drives swapped.
-
You probably got a two fold boost if you were replacing a WD 5400RPM drive, as those things park the heads every 10 seconds or so, and there's a noticeable pause every time they need to un park for access. But yeah, a 7200 is noticeably faster, and they're hardly any more expensive than 5400 nowadays.
-
i also notice studdering and sometimes freezing when trying to drag my browser window, will the upgrade to 7200 help or upgrading to 8gb help too. whats better? i hate when my windows freezes -.-
-
While playing game on my i3-2310m, the max temperature reported on hwmonitor was 75 degrees C. Is that in the danger zone for this laptop?
-
no it's not, 75° is fine.
Use 1333, I replaced mine with it. I think it also came with 1333, you can check that by yourself with any sysinfo utility.
There is space if you don't own a 13" dude
This is a bit low, I'm getting at least 7h under those conditions.
Nop, no problem here.
Same story, you may have a driver /software issue, try to uninstall conexant driver & dolby utility and check if you still have the same problem. -
Could you people please confirm if your cpu is throttling when gpu reaches 75 or 85° ?
Also please state which model, cpu and bios version you're using.
Mine throttles @75° with latest bios.
Also, does someone know if I can get Embedded Controller (EC) back to default values by flashing the bios again to latest ? -
Would a WD 7200rpm increase temps? I read some reviews that they run a little hot. If anyone has any suggestions (or what 7200rpm hdd they upgraded to) on what brand is the best fit for the 3830tg that would help.
-
Would you in turn help others with their own questions ?
That's the real question
-
Oh yeah I always am, but most of the questions on here are about the battery which I know nothing of. I get like 7 hours on battery and thats way more than I need so I don't worry about it.
I try to help with whatever questions I can, I just seem to dish out more than I help with.
-
héhé, just kidding with you no worries mate
-
I am not sure about the gpu temp but my cpu throttles when the cpu temp over 70 degrees. I just change the power option to high performance and when I play games and it doesn't seem to throttle with this setting. I have the 3830TG-6412 with the i3-2310m and gt 540m.
-
i really hope this is true.
unfortunately with school, i haven't had time to test the throttling with intensive games. BF BC2 is prolly the only game i own that i can test it with. -
How is the screen on the 13.3" ( 3830T/TG) version?
I'm looking at the previous model ( 3820T) because I can get it for $500 shipped (over $600 shipped for the 3830T). It comes with the same specs, aside from using a first gen i3, which only scores 200 points lower on Passmark CPU mark. However, I'm reading that aside from the great build quality and performance that the screen on the 3820T is absolutely terrible in terms of quality, contrast ratio, and color reproduction.
I'd be willing to pay the $100 difference for the new model, again, if anyone could give me an idea how decent the screen is on the 3830T/TG.
Appreciate it much! -
Well, no good news then. The screen is one of the worst I've seen on todays laptops. If your head is 3cm too high or two low, you'll already get false colors. The 3820 is far better in build quality and cooling system.
-
I started using this profile for my screen:
http://img1.focus-numerique.com/focus/profils-LCD/Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T.icc
Comes from a respectable website, but was meant for the 4820T.
I believe the screens are really close in term of specs and settings, so I guess it should be better from 3810 to 5830, even for travelmates.
I use a matte 14" one, and it seems a bit better, nothing outstanding though, but that was expected.
You can see on the following pics differences in gammut etc. using a 3830T (courtesy of another forum member whom I exchanged with)
Before
After
Try it and let us know what you think guys =)
Nobody has a color probe to try on those screens ? -
I believe the i3 will throttle @85° cpu.
You should check your gpu temp when it happens, should be @75° if I'm right ! -
Since the max temp is 85C, it should throttle a couple of degrees before that.
-
Thank you for the heads up. I will be doing graphic design and web work on this machine while away from my desktop, so I really need a solid screen. Unfortunately the 3820 and 3830 just don't seem to have that, although who can blame them. Even with a sub-par screen, it still seems like a great value for such a low price. Just not for my purposes.
If anyone was interested, I did some more shopping and was able to nab this for $500.00 with a coupon code.
Sony Vaio VPCS134GX/B
Same specs as the 3820T with some higher end features like the magnesium alloy casing, g-sensor shock protection, back-lit keyboard, dvd-r drive, (hopefullly) nicer screen. I was really set on getting one of the 13.3" TimelineX's, but Acer's support track record along with the screen really scared me away. Hopefully I made the right decision here. -
Regarding screen quality, it seems really on par compared to the 3820TG I had before, maybe slightly better. I can't remember clearly. My 3820TG broke (fell flat on the ground, screen down. Worst. Thing. Ever.) and unfortunately the screen I replaced it with sucked horribly. So right now this screen seems marvelous.

My heatsink mod on my Staples i3 3830. I used an Arctic Cooling VR0005 kit that I picked up at Canada Computers and some thin RAM sinks left over from a GPU. The fins were filled down and I also made the base of the sinks thinner. The leading edge of the fins are rounded so the cover slides over more easily. I tried shortening some copper pin heatsinks I had but the pins would catch on the cover. The thermal adhesive still needs 24 hours so no results yet. The plan is to also make a notebook cooler with a 120mm fan so I think I can get it to the point where it runs without throttle stop and maybe a GPU OC. When you take out the cooling assembly it is shocking how tiny the fins in front of the fan are. It looks like the fins could take up twice the thickness that they do now and that probably would have been enough to cool the system properly. More fin area with a faster fan would probably have been enough to let people play games with out frame rate drops so I'm not sure why Acer avoided that.
