Jesus rbl, what kind of sandpaper did you use on the gelid sinks? They stripped all the sand off my paper, lol. I replaced the copper ones I had before above the GPU with the gelid aluminum ones, which didn't seem to make any difference at all between the two. I've got 5 heat sinks above the GPU now, which keeps the GPU temps nice and cool but I really need to sand down some heat sinks and replace my coins in order to see more improvement.

Instead of using sandpaper, you can use a file ;)

I am using Zalman aluminum sinks, I cut them with a nail clipper before filing them down even.

My online store just sent me a mail, telling me they talked to Acer and I'll get my full money back as a gesture of goodwill from them. So for now, I'm happy :)

    Took them 3 months! :)

bluetooth is Atheros AR3011/3012 (first having +HS option, not really sure what exactly is); the sata interface in timelinex x830 is indeed SATA III - some tests here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/7409344-post621.html (i should mention that i tried to use a desktop hdd there, as a test  ... for sure it didn't started, even the power is enough

    Hi

Im from Spain and I bought this computer yesterday. It arrives tomorrow.

I have readed some problems with this laptop, like cooling problems. Is this true?

I want it to play the following games: fifa12, dirt3, crysis 1 & 2, assasins creed, GTA 4, Battlefield 3, COD 3, etc.

    Could I?

    Thanks

pd: sorry for my poor english. I need to improve it!

My i7-2620M Q16M ES finally arrived today.

No problems with installation and the CPU shows up in the BIOS and Windows 7 computer properties as Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0 @ 2.70GHz.

CPU score in Windows Experience index went up by about 0.4 points over the stock i5-2410M, from 6.7 to 7.1.

Not much change in temperatures either so far. I will try loading it with some Starcraft II later.

Anyway, just confirming that Q16M ES i7-2620M does indeed work in this system, save some money since there is no need to buy the OEM version.

With that done, I think just about everything that could be upgraded has been upgraded, except for the LCD panel!
    RAM: 8GB DDR3-1333
    HDD: WD Black 750GB
WiFi: Intel 6300 (only using 2 antennae)
    CPU: i7-2620M

This thing now has a better spec than a loaded MBP for half the price, and the best part is it's not an Apple :)

    How do I check?
And also, how to force turbo/check if turbo is in effect? I haven't installed the Intel turbo boost monitor and don't really feel like installing any extra services. Will ThrottleStop do it (I also don't use TS but I do have it on the computer)

ThrottleStop will tell you everything. Check off "Set Multiplier" and click the up arrow all the way to turbo and push save. I have "Clock Modulation" and "Chipset Clock Mod" both checked off and set at 100% as well. Run Prime95 or some other type of software that loads up the CPU, and look at the "VID" which is voltage.

Ok ! But i think that if I mod the cooling system, I would lose my garanty.

I ordered this notebook last thursday and it arrives home next monday.

I could return it, but... what notebook could i buy with the same tech aspects and price?

Crysis 2, despite what you'd think, actually runs quite cool for a FPS. I think it's because it's GPU heavy, but not CPU heavy. I could run Crysis at x18 for 2-3 hours and hit 93C max, unmodded.

Do you raise the back of your laptop up? I'm running mine flat on a glass table-top, and my results after completely modding the cooling system with the sinks varies depending on the game from impressive to not-so-much.

Ex: Dead Island I previously had to run at x17 to avoid overheating/shutdown, now I can run it at x19. Deus Ex I had to run at x18 previously, now I can run at x22 indefinitely. Stalker COP is similar to Dead Island in that it gives my computer a stroke, though not as bad. That can run at x20 or so. What I've ended up doing is having profile 1 at x24 (the highest multiplier some games will run at for extended periods without throttling) and then profile 2 is x19 (the multiplier that will result in non-critical temps even in the most demanding games). Profile 2 triggers at 91C.

Anyway though, what's the deal? Is it the CPU, or are you raising your computer's back up? Or is it that I'm running it on a glass table?

P.S. If it's the CPU then I should buy one from you.

What I do is put the laptop on a text book, so that the left side is elevated, because that is where a lot of the vents are.

The CPU probably helps, but ES requires slightly more voltage, so I'm not sure. My synthetic diamond thermal compound, lapped contact points on the cooling system, and lack of paint on the heat pipes (better thermal transfer to sinks) probably makes a bit of a difference as well.

daya751, I bought the CPU from eBay. Not the cheapest source, but easiest, without having to go through a proxy through Chinese auction sites.

rbl_posse, I will try to get around to a Prime95 test with your TS instructions later. Thanks!

    Hi guys,

I bought a TimelineX 3830TG a little over two months ago -- have loved the computer so far. Lightning fast for non-intensive tasks and awesome portability/battery life compared to my old 15.6" notebook.

I would say I do a decent job of maintaining my notebooks -- I am a college student so I can be a bit rough on the chargers, but the computer itself I am always very careful with and make sure it is well protected when I take it to classes or on flights.

Unfortunately, I noticed yesterday that the plastic casing around the hinge on the right side was loose -- I planned on taking a look at it today and seeing if there was anything I could do to fix it. But as I opened the computer (slowly) this morning, the plastic casing broke off completely.

The notebook itself works fine, and now opens and closes without difficulty even without the casing piece -- but I am worried about the hinge being exposed over the long-run.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice for reapplying the plastic casing piece to the hinge, or perhaps another remedy to keep the hinge from constantly being exposed while the computer is open?

    Thanks for any advice! :D

Acer x830 series have a serious throttling problem and a battery made of what scientists call "crap"? ;)

You'd be better off with something else.

I don't think it's entirely fair to say that. It depends on what kind of use you expect to give the computer.

True, bad on Acer to release a product that has these problems straight off the shelf. However, in regular day-to-day use, these problems probably will either not be encountered, or not noticed if they do occur (then in these situations, the "TG" model is probably unnecessary).

I should add though, that if you can get over that undeniable fact, and you are willing to put a little bit of work in to keep the machine running cool under loads heavier than daily tasks, you have a beastly machine with a powerful spec that no other competitor can match at the price point.

As for the battery issue, I can't say much since I work plugged in 95% of the time - I take it to work and dock it, take it back home and dock it. Of the few occasions I have been offsite, the battery has given me a full day's productivity. I don't game while unplugged. I don't know what brand battery I have, I don't know what my wear level is and I don't care much to find out because it lasts long enough as far as I care.

You could say some of us are biased in our aims to justify our purchases, but it seems like those of us who have taken care to do cooling mods are very happy with the system, while the unhappy ones are those who leave the system as-is. In that regard I could say this iteration of TimelineX is like 'enthusiast' notebook, you need to get your hands dirty to squeeze the best performance out of this machine - are you willing to do it?

I would gladly buy this system again, and the system's successor. Easily recommended from me.

edit: I realized I didn't address anything about the screen at all. It's glossy and I prefer matte (and I use an external monitor when docked), but all I can give you is a very unhelpful "It looks fine to me" and "it gets the job done". I don't think it's going to be much different from other panels in the same price range give or take. Box stores should have both machines on display, why don't you take a visit and have a look if you live near enough one?

I didn't mean to offend but in all honesty this notebook (or the series for that matter) doesn't do what it promised to.

As for the prices and performance there are 15" notebooks that can rival and beat 5830TG. I've never been interested in 13" & 14" units so I can't comment on that.

Mind you I'm not trying to anger you guys here- I'm just being fair towards a person asking for an opinion on this notebook and the fact is that this series has some serious issues.

No offense taken, downloads, and you are quite right that off-the-shelf, the CPU will not run at the advertised speed (similarly with battery life) under all circumstances. It takes a bit of work to get it fixed up, which in all fairness Acer should have done before putting this series out to market.

I suppose I should clarify that my experience is with the 3830TG, powerful options in this size class are more limited. I'm more obsessed with crazy power in tiny packages ;) I used to have an Everun Note even, 7" Turion X2 1.2GHz + ATI RS690E  It was unbelievable, but ultimately wasn't practical for me.

I have to agree with you on this one Downloads. The current Timelines are defectively designed. I have been recommending the Sony SA to anyone who is looking for a small, powerful 13" notebook. Since the LG P330 has been released in Korea, soon buyers will have another option.

To have such problems in the successor to the 3820TG is really disappointing and inexcusable. Hopefully, Acer wakes up and solves the problem in the next gen Timelines. For now, I tend to suggest that buyers look elsewhere.

The throttling problem has been identified by almost every owner of the Timeline in this thread. While it may not appear while the unit is using the Intel GPU, the whole purpose of buying a dedicated GPU in a notebook is for 3D graphics. While my use is not gaming, I can assure you that my everyday use of my 3820TG would have the 3830TG in throttle mode almost constantly.

Macs are usually expensive, I'm surprised :)

I'm considering the move to Macbook pro as well, just don't know if I'll get used to Mac OSX. Also don't wanna be an "apple-guy"... they're usually so arrogant when debating computer technology :p

An Early 2011 Mac costs 1149 Euro in Germany. I got it for 800 Euro, the money I got from the refund of the 3830TG. If you don't like MacOS, the Macbook also runs Windows 7.

I found a possible solution to the battery wear problem. When the battery is fully charged and I disconnect it for a second and plug back in, it gets back a small portion of it's capacity. I managed to get it back from 25% to 14% this way, and still working on it.

I must decided if buy a copper sink of aluminum sink so if both of them are 4mm high, is it enough or I must sand them?
I've read that copper is more difficult to sand.

Yes you need to sand them, I'd use a file though. Copper is damn near impossible to file/sand, it would take an hour or two (plus some serious callouses/burned fingers) just to do one, and I did 12 (aluminum thank god)

Picked up the i3/540M version of the 3830 today from Staples (Canada) for $424 ($459 - $35 in coupons). Figured it was a good deal.

Any chance this would play Skyrim at reasonable FPS?

Probably. I have the same one with no mods (just Throttlestop) and I can play BF3 (at least the beta) at pretty good rates. I also play a fair amount of Just Cause 2 with good FPS.

Not entirely sure what Skyrim requirements are compared to these

Neat I payed the same price with coupons also :)

Can't say for sure how it will perform with skyrim but I've played BF3 without any problems with medium preset settings with good fps.

Definitely can't go wrong with less than $500 after taxes for this type of notebook. Other people won't agree regarding that since it's Acer but if you know your stuff well then you know you got a great deal.

The Staples version is a sweet deal. If I knew beforehand that the CPU could be so easily upgraded, I would have bought that instead. As it is I paid $200 more than that for the i5-2410M version whose CPU I'm not even using anymore :p

What kind of ramsinks are you thinking of getting, ones with the long ridges, or ones with an whole bunch of little poles? I have these which I clipped using a nail clipper, or you can try these Enzotech sinks. The Enzotechs are copper, but I have some of their other chipset sinks and the copper is quite soft, you can probably also cut these with clippers.
