for testing another OS without touching boot section in original hdd, for example. bios will not allow to select this second hdd as first boot, anyway - maybe because the optical disk drive is on a sata link of zero-power kind (as stated in sata 3 specifications - http://www.sata-io.org/technology/6Gbdetails.asp

I think you're right, and you just learned me why my 2nd hdd was turning off on a regular basis whatever I tried. I ended up putting it in an external case

[HS] with wifi AP and NAS included, really nice product 7links NFP-500.AP, almost perfect if it wasn't for the slow transfer speed via wifi, although internet works flawlessly) [/HS]

Anyway it's easier to virtualize isn't it ?

yes... and no option to disable this (although i read that windows 8 can do something in this direction). as about an usb external drive, well, sometime the adapter itself is doing the power management [i have one of these, entering in a power save mode and spinning down the hdd after a period of inactivity, even without the usb link] - so isn't a good solution either.
after all, i could use a ssd as main drive, putting the 750gb drive as secondary. but this will bring another problem: increasing the number of spin up - spin down cycles will decrease the lifespan of the hdd...
and finally, virtualisation will not be an answer if i want to test entire hardware platform directly

    Hi,
would it be possible to upgrade 4830tg with Ivy Brigde and/or GF640M? Or it requires whole new chipset?

EDIT: Nevermind, just saw that it was discussed in earlier posts. Haven't been on NBR for a long time :p

Installing Nedemai's modded 1.10 bios causes the i3 version of the 3830 to throttle at 85C instead of shutting down at 85C(with throttle temp set to 90C in the bios menu).

the processor can be upgraded, in certain conditions, mostly not for portables, like HM67 ( http://motherboardnews.com/2011/05/27/ivy-bridges-backwards-compatibility-explained/). graphic card will require reballing and i'm not sure if TDP will not be overwhelming for actual cooling system. i suggest you to wait and buy a HM77 based laptop, when available

I'm not sure what the big deal is about the overheating. I had the issue and simply set my processor not to go over 99% in power management to stop turbo. Now I can play skyrim for 4 hours on my 52 inch at medium settings and not go over 80 c. as3830tg.

By the way, for those of you that have SSDs, what has that done to the battery life?

EDIT: oh, and it was sitting on top of an audio receiver that puts out a lot of heat.

hey everyone, i have a3830tg and for some reason today when i unplugged the cord the system turns off, i later found that my battery is not detected for some reason. it was after playing dota and i forgot to turn on the fan so it probably went up to 88 degrees C. The battery indicator doesnt even turn on as well so im really confused. I just called acer and i have a battery coming and just wondering if there was a nother solution. (do not know how to open the acer by myself, i tried reading the guide somewhere here but was scared and difficult. Thx)

I know when I was playing with the Extended Controller I managed to make the system think the battery wasn't installed or plugged in etc... This caused the battery indicator to blink, change color and not work at all (depending on the values entered) and more or less stop powering the system. It is possible that something similar happened for you.

I ran into an issue with the battery where the system didn't want to stay powered. I fixed this by re-flashing the firmware, since it rewrites the EC as well. Doing this might fix your issue... however if it doesn't there is a chance there is a hardware issue.

    Hope this helps.

Sounds like you need to just flip your battery switch. There is a switch behind the back cover that is supposed to prevent the unit from being turned on with the back cover removed.

Guys, you replace i3 CPU with i5 ES CPU why? To have more performance + have 15 more degrees before shutdown.

But also i see i5-2430 people replacing CPU to i5-2540 - WHY are you doing that? that is pointless IMHO

BTW, which thermal paste of commonly available is better?
    AC MX-3, MX-4, Liquid Metal?

Is there a better screen for 3830? I don't know, maybe IPS or 1600x900.

Removing that grill from bottom itself - how much degrees allow to win?

Just swapped WD Black 750gb with 256gb SSD M4 and move it to optical bay drive (4830TG) whole system now much faster but i think this reduces battery life by a bit (due to 2nd HDD)

And i encounter a problem of shutting down. Basically, when i press shut down, the screen went black (after windows shutting down... screen). The power still on with the lights indicator and some heat flowing out from the vent. I need to press and hold power button to force shut down

    No issue with hibernation

Hi all, small question WHAT ACER ASPIRE 3830TG AND MSATA? Example OCZ Nocti 60GB?
(60 GB, SATA II, MLC, TRIM, SandForce, read 280MB/s, write 260MB/s)
In my country cost this msata only 2183czk/87us, and it's good price on primary hdd only on OS and second normal hdd for data.

Personally, I replaced the i3 with an i5 mainly becasue of the heat issues as the i3 throttles at 85c compared to the 100c for the i5 and if you force the multiplier at x19 or higher it can easily cause it to reach higher temps and shut down immediately. The better performance was a huge bonus in my case.

For those who upgrade to the 2540M from other i5 models I believe it's because it's newer, clocked faster, has more features and runs cooler.

As for the thermal compound, I used Arctic Silver 5 since I've had good experiences with it in the past but I'm sure there are better alternatives out there. A lot of people here suggested the "IC Diamond 7" as a great choice.

Yes I got it from ebay. It was $109 but I had a $10 coupon so I got it for $99.

This is the cheapest I could find and it's the same seller I got mine from

At least on linux there is possibility to install the boot loader to another drive, so in therory could install the system on the msata and boot from another drive. But how can it be put in? Where is the slot for it?

to downloads: ok,no option for boot in this notebook okay. but what option: in bios set normal hdd on boot and on this normal hdd install some application for select boot devices and now select msata on normall hdd install application for select boot device.this would not work?
it is a pity that this bios is not an option, maybe if the bios modified by adding this option only.
to pasoleatis: hi,i feel that there should be or not?now I'm not sure :Di'll probably have to disassemble laptop again and look on it.

Honestly I don't know if it's possible- it sure would be a treat but admittedly Linux is "a bit" more customizable, so I'm not sure if it can be done in Windows.

All in all it still can't be done in a hassle-free way. :(

I have an issues with lower GPu voltage bioses:

in fact if i start kombustor, my GPu voltage for start is 0.90, and only after some time it goes to 0.85.

But, in Acer bios, which changed the GPU VDCC to 0.85 it was from start.
so, this is a bad sign - not all has been changed. Maybe bios developer can work this issue out?

0.80v version is buggy - 0.80 volts is not enough for my gpu to run at stock speeds. maybe you can have 0.82 volts for gpu to be set?

Or can we find a way to control this voltage from os? like msi afterburner allows me to do so on my desktop?

anyone else having high-freq noise from right side of laptop? heard from right side? near enter key. only happening when under load.

So, you can maintain you laptop using CPU burner such as linx avx edition and furmark/kombustor heating gpu and no shutdown?
Can you make a screenshot with temps and settings you use for such heating?

    thank you

After testing for eight hours, I've found that after installing Nedemai's modded bios(The version that does not touch the vbios), setting thermal throttling to 90C, the GPU no longer causes throttling at 75C, at least on the i3-2310m model.

I had the GPU running at 89C(as recorded by MSI Afternburner) along with the i3-2310M running at 16x the entire time, and the CPU only started to throttle(very slightly, to a 15.xx multiplier) when the CPU temp hit 85C.

The amount of throttling seems to be dependent on CPU temps, the higher they are, the more throttling occurs.

The main problem is that neither the GPU nor the CPU internal sensors can read and record temperatures of higher than 89C for the GPU or higher than 85C for the i3-2310M CPU, with this modded bios installed, though I don't think they could before. Before installing the modded bios, the CPU would cause thermal shutdown at 85C instead of throttling.

The method of throttling is also different now. It used to throttle immediately to 12x, but now it throttles based on CPU temperature, with the GPU having no effect on throttling, as far as I can see.

for me it can perfectly read temps above 90C as for gpu and cpu aswell...

right now i have msi kombustor running for couple of hours with temps maxed out at 96C (ONLY gpu load) and after lifting laptop back - after 2-3 minutes it's 89C now and still dropping... so - we need a cooling plate under laptop and remove that damn grill cover under... i go to service, pay em couple bucks and hope i will not loose warranty

As for the unlocked bios I downloaded it from this thread, thanks to Nademai he unlocked it. I think it's possible if you installed Windows first on the primary hdd then installed another copy of Windows to the mSATA drive since windows always writes the boot info to the primary drive. Then, you could just delete the windows installation from the HDD. The only problem here is that there's no way to install an mSATA disk in any of the current TimelineX laptops, unless you plan on soldering it to the board which is NOT easy and could easily turn your laptop into paper weight!

The noise coming out from the right side of the laptop is most likely due to the HDD.

Though I haven't tested much using any synthetic benchmarks, I played Skyrim for 2 hours (x26 multiplier - 760Mhz GPU clock - Medium settings - 720p - FXAA On) with the laptop sitting on a cooler) and here's a screenshot of the temps after I exited the game:

    http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/5906/temps01.jpg

I'll try to do some benchmarking with 3dmark/msi kombustor and I'll post the results as soon as I can.

Nope, this only when i load my GPU - high frequency noise, like mosquito

    Hello,

In the old days when we were running Windows 98 Se there was partition magic program which came with many utilities. One of them was a boot loader (boot magic maybe ). It is also possible what the other persone suggested a few posts ago. To install windows on a normal hdd, then copy it on the msata and jut have the boot loader.

If people are having issues with the modded Bios I would like to point out the 5830TG mods for the vbios are buggy and seem to not work well with the 0.80v mod. I would adjust this but I've not had time to sort it out and I only own a 3830TG model as well... so testing is difficult.

That being said each machine is different and the tolerances of the GPU will vary. Please do not expect that every machine will run a stable GPU at 0.80V, it wasn't designed to run this low... its just nice when it does.

If you are having issues it is also very helpful to know the model of machine you are running. This allows me to sort out why the issue is occurring.

@ajnauron I've noticed somewhat similar behavior with my 3830TG. Difference being that the GPU will still cause a 12x multiplier throttle once it hits 75C and the CPU won't cause throttling at all.

@Yuna if you want to control the GPU voltage from within windows install the stock Bios and try nvidia inspector. This tool allows one to change clocks and voltages from within windows and does work with my 3830TG.

Delete the sound drivers and let Windows install the drivers automatically. However, make sure you take a backup of drivers and applications using the Acer Backup Manager before you do so..just in case.

You should be able to as long as its not the one with the modded vbios as well. The modded vbioses won't allow certain options to work in Nvidia inspector.

i tried "1.10 Menus" - no go, can't allow me to change. I should try ACER 1.10 stock bios instead?

to CoLDxFiRE: Hi, thx for your reply. 16GB WORKS IN 3830TG WITH ONLY 2CORE CPU? Its super :) I buy second ram only 4gb samsung 1333mhz cl9 because I think that this notebook acer aspire 3830tg with 2core intel core i5 2410m + hm65 support only 8GB max. Ok so I sell my 2*4gb and buy 2*8 :)

I removed down lid, but not changed thermal paste - still shutting down after 5 min of simultaneous Kombustor + Linpack. This time? CPU overheat 100C -> shutdown.

So, for me removing grills from laptop down side - will not help.
Do i need to tear down whole laptop to replace thermal compound? Or i can remove cooling from down lid and then replace it back?

What TimelineX do you own? My 3830TG required a full teardown to replace the TIM.

Try the stock bios and see how it plays with nvidia inspector as well.

Anyone having trouble running Diablo III heat wise? My laptop has stock bios and gpu clocks running on x17 multiplier on a cooling pad and I'm still getting temps of 88 celcius running all settings on low at 1280x720 resolution. Performance isn't an issue, its just the crazy heat. I hope to play this game for a while but I don't think my laptop can last under this crazy heat load, does anyone have any tips short of applying new thermal paste?

About bios, nv inspector can't change on stock bios gpu voltage either.
