Hi everyone,
I just bought a 4820TG and I am really dissappointed by the screen. It is very grainy, one can see the pixels even from half a meter away. It seems as if the pixel borders are very prominent especially the longitudinal borders so that one can see longitudinal "lines" across the screen (most prominent with a white background).
So I thought it is just mine and went to different stores to check. But they all are like that (have seen at least 5 other 4820TG's).
I am not sure if this is suppose to be like that - a feat to make it more bright or more sharp - but it really annoys me big time. Especially when comparing it to my old laptop who does not have that, where you have to get really close to the screen an focus quite hard to make the pixels visible.
Anyone else experiencing this? Is it a flaw?
Apart from that I am very satisfied with the 4820TG. That is why this screen issue really pisses me off![]()

Well..., Ok then...I just wanted to warn you possible buyers that there are (might be) some screen issues with the TimelineX series.
By accident I have found this screen glitch also in a Dell Alienware Notebook (the 11' version). Same prominent pixel story there...
I dont know, again, maybe it is not an error but I really cannot see why these grainy pixels should make the screen any better... :-(

anyone having bought a TimelineX series yet who could confirm my findings?

I just bought a 5820T and I must admit the screen quality is quiet bad.
Very washed out colors and viewing angles are terrible.... Will have to have a play hoping to improve the colours, i have my doubts.
I wondered how they could have such good specs and keep the price down, cheap screens.
Haven't gamed yet... Be interested to see how it looks and how the specs i5 520m/HD5650 fair.
I'm in Australia by the way.
Feels quiet sturdy when picked up (no flex) very thin and sleek.
P.s posting from the partners iPad... It's actually growing on me! -
There are only a couple of big screen makers, and most laptop manufacturers will be using the same couple of sources. Depending on production location and timing you might get any of a number of screens. Moreover the screens supplied may be different to the review models and even to the screen you looked at in the retail store.
Laptop screens are currently
16:9 in many cases to salute DVD playing (or cut power consumtion)
1366x768 or less for readability (or to make life easy for the graphics chip and boost benchmark frame rates)
Having lousy vertical viewing angles for maximum sharpness at best (and to be cheaper)
etc -
i got my 4820tg today
i now get what all the hype is about on the screen
from 2 feet i cant tell
but 1ft i see slight vertical lines (easier to see on white)
its not enough for me to return it, imo you'll get used to it -
I received it a couple of days ago.
I've been running burn-in tests
and using it since I received it.
I don't see any vertical lines on my screen.
I've stared, at a distance of 1 ft and less,
on a mostly white screen with various levels of brightness.
My eyesight is passable, I don't wear any glasses.
I don't see the graininess or those vertical lines mentioned.
Luckily, no dead pixels also.
Any other method I can do to the screen that might reveal those problems?
I still have 20+ days and no restocking fee for a return. I'll take advantage
of this, if I can see these problems and will research for another
brand/model if needed. -
I really don't see the vertical lines or graininess that people keep mentioning. I've owned several laptops and the 4820TG is comparable to most of them except for my old Dell Inspiron 700m (which had one of the best screens in 2003). I only notice the pixels when I stare at the screen very close... like 3 inches close. It looks normal to me from a feet away.
The 4820TGs you saw in the store were probably from a bad batch of manufactured screens. The quality of the screens are very inconsistent with Acer. -

Got my replacement laptop today and I am glad to say it doesn't have the vertical line problem.

I got mine from newegg. My LCD is AUO.
I have 30days to replace it, but the more I think about it, the more I realize it seems fine.
I'm starting to think that I'm only thinking theres lines because of placebo...
I watched a whole movie and I didn't even notice. Idk lol, maybe im just seeing stuff
Bronsky, I did did swap the HDD for a momentus xt 500 and I just used the ATI drivers that were on Acer's site. Everything seems to be OK with the drivers, sleep mode works. At first I used the drivers from the backup disc, but I had issues (mouse froze during minimizing/maximizing animation).
I'm going to compare with another laptop....
