A friend of mine gave me a Acer TravelMate 2310 with Win XP Home to fix.

The laptop doesn't have any malware, has almost no software installed apart from Windows, Office, but is totally unusable when it reaches the Welcome Screen, I sometimes manage to login with any of the accounts but can't do anything else (it's too slow; can't even open Task Manager).

If I go to Safe Mode it works normal.

I used System Restore to go back in time a couple of months (she assures me she had no problems then), that failed. So I restored the PC by bootin from DVD and went back 2 years ago...same result. I also restored to the Factory Default using the partition...again I have an unusalbe laptop...unless in Safe Mode, this is a clean install I have now.

I checked the disk using SpinRite (no errors), if I go to Safe Mode I can see a couple services (System Event Notification, DCOM) fail to start when doing the normal boot to Windows.

Since everything works fine in Safe Mode I assume it's not the hardware, but I can't understand why it's unusable using even with the Factory Defaults.

    Any ideas, suggestions?

Thank you for your suggestion weinter. Where do I get the media (none came with the notebook) to install XP? I could probably get the key using one of the tools, but I'd still have no media to install with.

Borrow a Retail Xp CD Without the key I will tell you the activation method later.
I assume it has a legal Xp OEM license?
After some google I found part of the reason is because it has a Celeron Processor...
The recovery partition is good then maybe you just need to uninstall Acer Default Crapware and reduce the number of startup.

Are all the drivers up to date :)? Check the GPU driver, chipset and audio!

    Good luck!

Well after looking at the link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. I searched real quick and it metioned something like this being fixed in SP2. I would suggest, if you can get into Windows, install all of the service packs all of the updates. That may fix your problem if it's an issue with Xp.

goodoldjam I have SP3 on the system...not sure what happened, but I managed to install everything was ready to take it to the user, rebooted one last time and now it's acting the same as before.
I did a System Restore so I have a clean install again, but that didn't help.

I'm really lost on this one.

I replaced the HDD and wanted to test using a plain XP CD. In the middle of the install the keyboard and trackpad became unresponsive. I inserted a USB mouse which worked, but was unable to enter the computer name...

I have no idea what's wrong.

Can you still enter the bios with the keyboard?
I would try to install again since it worked one second and then stopped the next.
If the usb mouse works then you should be able to hook up a keyboard also and at least finish the install and see if the trackpad/keyboard works after it installs.
Also you could try and see if the touchpad is turned on with the Funtion shortcut and that the keyboard is not set to numberpad, just in case.

I've tryed alot of tricks when i had a similar problem, Unplugging the power and removing the battery for 30mins, trying without the battery. I reseated the memory, i made sure the touchpad and keyboard were connected well. These all sounded stupid to me, but some have said that it works. So i tried them anyway. Bios update may be worth a shot if you can get xp installed and usable.
So there's some things you could try before you start thinking it's something more serious. Though if you can't enter the bios then i would start thinking it could be a mainboard problem.

Your battery is gone, controller failed.
If you want to use the laptop without replacing the battery disable "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" in device manager, removing the battery also works.

Yup, that's what was wrong...someone at the service provided that clue and all is well.

Just wish you'd have seen this thread sooner :)
