I thought that I would post here since I have had a tech check my notebook for malware viruses etc. and the notebook is clean. He is my regular tech.
What occurs is that as I close the lid of the notebook after logging off and the black screen appears...simply the movement slowly in attempting to close the lid causes the notebook to start rebooting?
Does any experienced user have any suggestions as to what might be the issue.
    All suggestions welcomed!
The only way I can shut the notebook down is to power it off??
BTW, xpsp3 and 2 gigs ram.

Check your Power Options - something might be set that tells the computer to hibernate or something when the lid is closing (just a hunch).

Thank you for the reply. I checked the power options and found the following:

    Under Power Scheme:
When I close the lid of my computer..'do nothing'.
When I press the sleep button...'do nothing'
When I press the power button...'shutdown'

Under Hibernate: there is no check mark beside hibernate

Not being computer tech literate, I was not sure about the relevancy of the other items Alarm etc., that is as related to my issue at hand.
I tried to reset "Under Power Scheme" in order to see if something was not recognized and I tried to make a change to "close the lid setting" and cancel the above and the Power Scheme would not allow me to do that?
I was thinking a change and set back to do nothing might refresh it?
Thank you again, all comments appreciated.

I can't understand this. Now the notebook will reboot after logoff w/o me closing the lid? And as I said in an earlier post, the notebook has been checked out by a tech for malware etc. He is someone that I use when I get into impossible situations, but it was not as bad as it is now.

That is truly odd - I'm not 100% how, but there's a way to log crashes and have the data be dumped to a text file. Google that (or maybe someone will post it), and give it a try.
Your system may be rebooting due to a system crash during log-off.

I have been googling for a symptom like this for crashes as I did read that some computers have a setting where the computer reboots after logoff on some computers with this feature to prevent the actual crash occurring at that moment? But after that article I have found nothing else and don't know where to look for such a setting if there is one on this notebook. BTW, this occurs regardless of whether I have just used the notebook for a short period in the morning or after a day's use. There does not seem to be say, a heat issue as it is on a cooler mat as well and as I mentioned I may use it for 15 min. first thing in the morning and log off...only to have the same problem.
