Hey everyone, got my Acer TravelMate 291 notebook and so far am loving it. The only issues I have with it (minor) are the speakers, which aren't a big deal to me anyway. And the keyboard is...well...I'm used to typing on an old mechanical IBM "clicky" keyboard hehe

But I do have one small, kind of silly question for you TravelMate owners.....

How in the heck do you get the image of the guy jogging off of your login screen?! I've even turned off fast switching mode, so you have to log in like in windows 2k, but the jogging guy is STILL there...how can I replace that with another image (which I never knew you could do in the first place), or even, get just the blue screen back with login prompt?

    Thanks a bunch

    John

Do you mean the small icon for XP login? If so that's handled in teh control panel under users.

I think I know what you mean.. :)

Download the latest version of Tweak UI from Microsoft and see the login options..

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
(check the right table where all the programs/applications are listed)

Here is where you find the settings:
    Logon->uncheck the "show..." tab/s
    I think it should work..

mihai that was exactly what i meant thanks! the old versions of tweakui i've been using on the desktop were nothing like this new one! now i have not only the classic windows 2000 login screen (which is superior to XP's native one imo), but I can have some digitalblasphemy.com backgrounds too!

    Hi guys,
a friend of mine got a "Travelmate 291LCi" notebook here in Germany. But to our surprise there was no Englisch recovery-CD included and even ACER support told us know, that there is no way to get such an English CD within Germany :-(
(If ever an English speaking person in a non-English-speaking country considers buying an ACER-Notebook better be aware of this !)

Anyway: We are now looking for someone who could copy for us his (or her) English CDs (must be two CDs) and send them to us. We would of course be willing to pay for the burning and mailing ...

If you have such CDs and are willing to help us pls. send me an eMail to Walter-family AT web.de or post an reply here.

    Thanks a lot !

    Tom

I have the 291LmI, not Lci, but if that will help let me know.

    I have 4 recovery CDs,

Disk 1: system cd rev 1.6 (bootable)

    Disk 2-1: recovery cd

    Disk 2-2: recovery cd

    Norton Antivirus 2004 cd

All of these CDs only say they are for the Travelmate 290 series, not 291, LMI, LCI, whatever. If that is what you need drop me a line and let me know which cds you'd like. Mailing them would be "kein problem" heh.

no problem. i'm fairly sure since the cd itself says 290 series, its all the same. but ascertain that for yourself and drop me a line. to be honest with you, i never use those recovery cds. you might be better off (if you have a copy of windows xp) just downloading the drivers from the acer website and saving that. or doing a backup with Acronis. Took so much rigging to get this computer to work the way I wanted from the way Acer had it. I mean....an XP Pro install on a fat32 partition?! haha converting that was job #1 when I got this thing. ;)

I've got a Acer travelmate 291 laptop and I don't know how to modify the Video Ram to 64MB. Now it is 16MB. I have tried to enter to BIOS configure tool by press F2, but I couldn't modify any parameter of Video Ram. Please help me. Thanks all
