Hey, this is my laptop... been having it since 2006 I think... Ehm, this might just not be the best possible place to ask for computer problems is it? I had some computer issues, thought only Acer folks might be capable to help..

Ask away. You won't get answers if you don't ask.

Ok this is how it all went 2 days ago: I came home from a party, I turned on my computer, I had started downloading a game "torrent". I went onto watch stream movie online, when all of a sudden during the movie the sounds started to LAG, you know the type of choppy sounds.. So I thought it was the in general so I had it turned off, so watching the game being downloaded, I thought it would be wise to let it go until the morning (Yesterday) I came down, and saw that the computer is working its butt off, (Engine Noise full throatle) The sound is sorta messed up, which makes the computer lag, + when I open any programs, the computer suddenly starts working and lags. I saw my norton antivirus, and i noticed that Auto-protection was off due to expired product, I reinstalled and fixed that problem. At this point I had it thought that it might be a virus to be blamed here, so i went for a full scan, a infostealer was found but quickly removed. But still something isn't as it should be, I STILL FEEL THE LAG! The CPU is stable at around 50-100 all the time!

I'm using a Acer TravelMate 3010 Windows XP

Any idea how I can try to fix this????

PS: I got this computer for like 3 years ago, and I have never formated it, nor cleaned it... could it be the fan inside which has been slowed down because of the dust around?

the thought of a 3 year old laptop that has never been cleaned makes me cringe,,,, i'd do that asap,,,, and it may be a good time to back-up crucial data and format and reinstall your system,,,

i've had my laptop 6 months and have cleaned the heatfins & fan 3 times... and reloaded it at least as many times,,, but i just love to have a CLEAN system

i doubt heat is the issue or the laptop would probably shutoff when it hits a set critical temp,,, but it could be slowing the CPU to keep heat under control.. i'm not at all familur w/ TM's

wish i could be more help,

I'm just really thankful that at least someone responded to my post.. (First of many forums which have tbh) I think I'll give it a shot and try cleaning my fan, tho I'm a bit scared cuz I've like never seen within a computer, also I'm studying abroad and I have no idea who can help me, you think it's safe if I do it myself?

You could just try using some compressed air where the fan is underneath, that might help a bit.
What application is using your CPU? Can you check in Task Manager?

Ok I tried to open up my PC, but i failed, once I was done taking out the bolts I noticed some wires are connected which keeps the computer jammed to each other, and there is no way im cutting anything! So trying to clean the dust in the fan (WHICH I DID SEE ALOT OF) is out of the question for me...

CPU type Mobile DualCore Intel Pentium M

    CPUID CPU name Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz

PS: What do u mean by compressing air?

at any electronics shop or even PC section of department store you should be able to buy what is refered to as Compressed Air,, basically it's a can of liquid refrigerant,, that when released from the can (held upright) blows "air" out under pressure... don't turn sideways or upside down,, it will release the LIQUID and can freeze things and even cause permanent damage.

It would be smart to ask if the folks at the electronic shop can do it for me right? Cuz i'm just too darn scared to damage anything at all..

    Hi prab88,

can you check exactly which process causes the CPU to run 50-100%?

that is in Task Manager, check processes tab. click on it, so that the running processes can be arranged in order.

I totally agree with Bigozone, since you'll definitely notice a significant improvement in your PC performance after dusting it.

But, there must be a running task (process/thread) that causes the CPU to process something.

most malware are designed to evade detection by Antivirus scans (since they
re not viruses & not in the Virus defn. database), try to download Ad-aware from cnet.com and run a scan, it might turn-up a stray process or a spyware.

if you are uncomforatable you could either pay a repair shop to clean it and help trouble shoot your CPU utilization at the same time,,

or just buy an extra can of "compressed air",, and play with it...

BTW if you ever need to cool a can of soda quickly,, you can always turn the compressed air dispensor upside down and press nozzel while pointing it at the soda can.... cool to taste... *i need to find humor in technology right now*

    Hey everybody yet again!
Ok these are the programs which are running at real high:

    explorer.exe 40k
    svchost.exe 31k
    LUCOMS~1.EXE 30k
    Firefox.exe 68k!
But I went to the store and they said that it would be cheaper to buy a new laptop than to clean it -.-
But still I tried to open up my laptop, and it seems like there are two wire (black&white) which are attached so that I can't open the computer up... I feel so hopeless! Thing is that I can buy a new computer, but since I'm aborad the computers here don't have some norwegian letter i need on the keyboard... so im really stressed for the time!

you obviously took the lappy to someone who just doesn't wanna work on it,, or knows they just might be able to sell you a new machine..

you should be able to remove the bottom pannel,, the ram access pannel (if it has one... and that should give you access to clean out the fan i would hope.... or maybe i'm just spoiled by my ACER's design!!

as far as the processes what are thier % CPU utilization??
that info would help mem usage is one thing,, but you seem to have a CPU that is being over tasked by something!!

    later,
