Hi
I am a new member who was looking for a forum which can provide information and feedbacks related to notebooks. I am seeking a help in selecting ACER notebook and need your help/advise on TravelMate 8005LM.
[] I used Toshiba Laptops (Notebooks) since 1988. The very last note book I owned was Toshiba Sattelite 2410-303 which turned out to be one of the best I ever owned.
Now I am in process buying a new notebook. I found Acer TravelMate 8005ML which has 1.8GHz Centrino Processor, 80 gB hard drive, 512 Mb of Ram, Wirelss 802.11b/g wireless card, Bluetooth, 15" Diplay, and the rest of bells and whistle. []
The notebook looks good, both in term of form factor and weight.
[?] Juts need to know if this model has any particular problems associated with it? Also if somebody is already owns or uses this model to share his experience and the pros and cons, and how is the performance?
I have a choice to get this model, or its cousine named Ferrari (which is basically the same thing, but with AMD processor, and Ferrari colors), or go for Aspire 2026 (a Model sold outside US).
Appreciate if I get the info.
Thanks and Regards

that laptop is acer's top of the range laptop, my dad has it, its quite stable, his had it for 4 months, no problems yet except maybe gets a little hot at times. The ferrari is almost exactly the same (chassis) just the colors and amd different.
the 8000 range is just a tad too heavy for me, but thats my opinion, i use the 3201xci.
so if u got the green, i think its a good buy, because your buying the best laptop out there in terms of weight, size, performance.

Thanks for your feedback. I managed to get one to just get a feel of the machine. Except for the material used for the system casing (feels plasticy compared to HP and Toshiba), otherwise the system is solid, with all the bells and whistles in a good system.
I managed to run most of applications I use seamlessly, as well some of my favorite game (Including DOOM III which was ok in the High resolution Mode).
I think I will go for this system specially for a bit of more money I can get 3 year international warranty as well. []

Finally I got my TM8005LMI this morning [
]
The System is impressive, although I had the choice to go for 8006LMI (equipped with 2.0 GHz processor instead of 1.8 GHz in 8005), but the performance gain does not justify the cost difference between the two models.
Initial setup was easy, but with few hiccups (Glad it came with XP Pro) which needed some work to be solved.
When I spoke to the sales person he asked me one simple question: Am I Computer Professional or just a normal user?
When I told him that I am a Computer Professional he suggested going for 8005 or 8006 for the following reasons:
1- Both systems come with Windows XP Pro meant for Office use environment.
2- The system has Smart Card Security system, especially when the notebook is used in Open Office Environment or on the Move.
3- The Notebook is lighter than other models (Specially Aspire 2026 which I was also considering to buy).
4- It Contains DVD Super Multi Drive which can accept various CD/DVD Media sizes (ranging from 5.25" normal CDs/DVDs to 3.5" CDs and Credit Card Size CDs, unlike Some other Acer Models (i.e. Aspire 2026 which only accepts 5.25" Media size due to CD/DVD Drive technology).
The screen size makes this notebook lighter, especially if the user on the continuous move and need to haul other stuff along with the system (Try to walk in Paris Charles De-Gaul Airport from Terminal 1 all the way to Terminal 8 with a Toshiba Satellite 2410 which weighs 7 pounds with all other accompanied stuff []).
The system gets a bit hot on the left lower corner but it is bearable.
I will post more findings as I go ahead and use the system.
Thanks Airborne for your comments which helped me take the decision [].

This is one lab top that's on my hunting list for my next buy.
I am currently using TM800 with 1.3G CPU, but I have upgraded upto 1G RAM, 802.11b/g, and Hitachi 7K60 HD, plus the bluetooth module. There is that one design problem, where the lower left corner get pretty warm if you start to work your HD hard. I have talk to acer's service manager in TW, they are telling me that it's due to the HD upside down design.
From my experience, if you upgrade your RAM to about 1G, which will take off some load on the HD. Then your HD won't get hot that easily.
As for the Ferrari model, it gets pretty hot after awhile. If it gets really hot, the performance decreases. So if you can find a way to cool your NB well, then the Ferrari model is a very good buy! -
I upgraded to 1 GB of RAM just like what the tech support said at Acer. The bottom left hand side still gets just as hot. I think the only way to cool that down is to get a slower hard drive (ie 4200 RPM), but I guess then you are sacrificing performance.
