    Hi,

I'm recently thinking about getting a new laptop. The TravelMate 8210-6597 pretty much gets everything I need (a nice looking chasis, ATI X1600...) and it's within my budget (~ USD$2000). However, I found that none of the major sellers (such as newegg, buy.com, best buy, Amazon...etc) have it on stock.

I was wondering if Acer is discontinuing this specific model? Or is it just get sold so well that I probabaly should just wait for a while till the stores get them replenishied?

PS: I know there's the other 8210 model which carries blue-ray DVD drive and is priced arounr $3k. However, I don't really need the blue-ray and $3k is kind of beyond my budget.

    Thanks.

I don't believe it's discontinued but for your budget, I'd consider another brand. For $2000 you can get a better GPU in a laptop with a better chassis strength. The TM8210 is by no means a poor choice, but my TravelMate's flimsy plastic chassis does not inspire confidence in me.

    Just my opinion :)

I actually also look at Asus G1 as well, but the Acer 8210-6597 looks sexier to me. The G1 looks a little bit bulky in comparison.

Besides, it comes with carbon fiber chasis. I believel there's really no others with similar specs and pricing around. Together with DASP, it seems that this laptop is pretty much bullet proof to me.

I wouldn't use it to stop a bullet ;) If it was a true carbon fibre chassis, that'd be cool. In reality though, it's only the lid of the laptop that's actually carbon fibre. Everything else is still plastic. Anyway, mwave has it listed, but it's out stock. This particular notebook does seem to be in low availability.

Looks like they are planning a model upgrade... about time. Better to wait a little bit and get the newer model. BluRay drives will become interesting once they are available for a reasonable price, e.g. not now.

The 8200 series looks OK but "sexy" is not a word I would use.. the build quality is OK too - I have had my 8204 for a year now - but not outstanding either.

I have some sweat spots where my hands rest, and the SD card reader is protected by a flimsy piece of plastic which finally broke off a few months ago. No big deal but ... bulletproof it is not.

Roughly one month ago I tried to replace my 8104 with the 8210, but at that time it was already out of stock everywhere.
So I called some acer phone number (something like reseller services or so) and they told me that indeed that particular model (with xp and no bluray) was discontinued and they didn't have plans to replace it with something equivalent.
Basically we are left with vista ultimate and bluray only for 3k :(

I had a look at alternatives, and at the end the only laptop I considered as comparable was the asus V1JP. But eventually I couldn't force myself to like it, and gave up.
