Is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 hard drive, model HTS541040G9AT00 with 40 GB, compatible with the Acer Travelmate 220, model 223XC?

I am trying to provide telephone support to my parents, who live in another part of the country and who bought a replacement for the hard drive in their notebook after the old one stopped working. They tell me that the Hitachi hard drive is half an inch shorter than the original IBM Travelstar and that the pins don't match, either. Specifically they say that the 4 separate pins (for the jumper) are shorter on the Hitachi drive. I am stumped by those statements.

    Many thanks for your advice.
